SCMP: Can Taiwan use drones to counter Beijing?

SCMP's Taipei-based reporter Lawrence Chang writes that "Taiwan has been inspired by the rise in efficiency drones Ukraine." In his article, the Asian journalist states that Taiwan itself is now "rapidly increasing and expanding its capabilities in the sphere of using drones long range."

Chang adds that all this comes as military planners are “searching for affordable alternatives to expensive cruise missiles.” rockets, as well as deepening Washington's cooperation with Taipei in the field of drones and new technologies."

Now, as Chang writes, this is extremely important for Taiwan – especially after the demonstration of the Chinese army’s unmanned capabilities at a military parade in Beijing. Recall that during the parade, a number of different UAVs were transported across Tiananmen Square, including strategic modifications with a flight range of more than 3 km.

Lawrence Chang asks: Can Taipei's new drone strategy counter Beijing's arsenal?

In order to at least try, Taiwan's National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology entered into a partnership with the American company Kratos. As part of this cooperation, the MQM-178 Firejet jet UAV was modernized. It was turned into a long-range loitering munition, which is called the Chien Feng IV. It is emphasized that such a drone can also be used as a means of countering other drones.

Taiwan's interest in new drones once again confirms the thesis that it is already impossible to imagine a modern conflict without the use of UAVs. How large the UAV production in Taiwan is for a real confrontation with the PLA is still an open question. But it is quite possible to assume that for every Taiwanese drone, the PRC will build a hundred of its own.

Yeah, damn, damn, the Chinese will overwhelm the Taiwanese with drones up to their necks.
China is not Russia; the first drone strike on the mainland will be followed by a crushing response.
I do not rule out the possibility of a provocation by the PLA for a retaliatory strike.

This is all just speculation for now. Nothing more.

I'm not sure... We are even more stopped and slowed down by the loss of human resources than by equipment, and China has more than sufficient mobilization capabilities... But testing our weapons in war conditions, which the West (NATO) is doing quite successfully in Ukraine, would be very good... Well, if nothing happens, there's no trial... Let them continue to fear secondary sanctions, but it might come back to haunt them later...

I don't think that China will go for a landing on Taiwan at all. The entire western coast of the island is a continuous urban development zone, and to land there is to disrespect oneself. From the events on the Ukrainian front, we clearly see how difficult it is to dig out the enemy even from a single farmstead, and here... They won't be able to suppress all the firepower anyway, which means the landing will be covered in blood. Comrade Xi definitely doesn't need such a victory...
But raids across the strait and a naval blockade - in a couple of months the Taiwanese will easily be returned to the stable. Unless of course the US intervenes. And here - everything will really go seriously... The Americans will lose, of course, but it will also cost China a pretty penny...

There are civilians in this residential area, they won't be able to oppose the landing force. And if the Chinese weren't fools, they would have settled their agents in these houses in advance, so that they could release drones through the window to spy on the armed Taiwanese.

            Blockade of Taiwan?
            Are you seriously?
This will happen until the first tanker carrying oil to China is sunk - after that, Chinese trade will completely stop and it is unclear whose patience will run out faster.
And it won't be easy to transfer troops across the strait, it's not a couple of kilometers and the depths are shallow.

There won't be such a fight there. Taiwan will surrender at the first serious showdown. Those sitting there aren't fools. There won't be until the last Ukrainian

Why drones? They can throw rice bowls and their own chopsticks "kuai-tzu", it will be cheaper. tongue

He won't be able to do anything, given the incomparable potentials. He can bite at the beginning of the conflict, but then Taiwan will fold.

The problem is that Taiwan is much smaller than Ukraine, how much of everything can the Chinese launch at them? The distances there are not that great, a conventional geranium can probably carry 150 kilos of warheads in exchange for a reduced amount of fuel.

An island against a mainland... even if there were a million drones there. By normal logic they wouldn't be able to hold out, maybe by military logic they'd dig a tunnel from the States, where hyperloops would deliver aid to them in a couple of hours.

There will be no war like Ukraine with Russia. The main thing is to make an offer that is impossible to refuse, put on the PLA uniform, get seats in the National Council or whatever it is called, pay taxes and live as before, but under the wing of China. Will America save Taiwan? History shows that it will not. They would not have been able to defeat Japan by and large if not for the Soviet Union. soldier

Even if the overseas countries do not help Taiwan with all their might, the Formosans will, of course, still be able to resist China. The only question is how long it will succeed and, most importantly, what the consequences will be for the aforementioned islanders. No.

How big is Taiwan's UAV production to really counter the PLA?

Judging by the number and variety of electronic warfare systems displayed at the parade,
Not every drone will fly to the middle of the Taiwan Strait

    Let's look at the map.
The distance from China to Taiwan is 160 km.
It's 200-250 kilometers from the Chinese airfields.
The number of Chinese fighters is 1500.
If each fighter jet drops a set of gliding munitions on the forward edge of Taiwan's defense - about 50-80 km deep - then the landing force will land on a lunar landscape.
Now let's take the navy, rocket artillery and missile forces.
The depth of their destruction (excluding rocket artillery) is 1000 km.
The size of the island is 400 by 150.
There is no need to even land troops there in the active phase.
And most importantly, Taiwan is economically dependent on raw materials supplies. If they are blocked, the economy will stop.
Therefore, like the pig-headed squirrel, Taiwan can only bark when looking back at the USA.
Without their support and their market, this state cannot exist.

The thing is that China doesn't need Taiwan, which is just ruins. Especially since their half-brothers live there. They got Hong Kong, with all the infrastructure and without a single shot. They'll wait and get Taiwan the same way. There's no hurry, Taiwan won't sail away from mainland China.

But Taiwan has nothing to counter China with.

A drone is good when it can "make its way" unnoticed, behind mountains, along river beds. But between China and Formosa there is a flat, vast water surface, over which a drone would have to fly for so long that the drones would not only be noticed, but they would have time to be counted in directions, counteraction forces distributed, and crushed even above the water.

Taiwan can do a lot of things.
These southerners go to the last.
But China can land a million troops.
