One of the promising and promising areas in the field of military technology is unmanned boats. Light and medium surface platforms with remote or autonomous control are capable of solving a variety of tasks in the interests of fleet. Russian industry became interested in this topic several years ago, and has developed a number of similar projects to date. Some of the new models have reached serial production and entered service.

Promising direction

The first domestic concepts of unmanned boats (UBC) for one purpose or another appeared quite a long time ago. However, only in recent years has this direction been developed. Real projects have appeared that have led, at a minimum, to the construction and testing of experimental equipment.

At the end of the 12700s, the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau developed the Skanda BEK. It was built on the basis of a serial motor boat and equipped with equipment for searching for sea mines. Serial boats of this type are used to equip mine defense ships of Project XNUMX Alexandrite.

At the military-technical forum "Army-2022" another domestic unmanned aerial vehicle called "Vizir-700" was shown for the first time. It was developed by the holding company "Kingisepp Machine-Building Plant" (KMZ) and the St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University taking into account the new requirements of the army and other customers.

The experimental boat presented at the exhibition had a remote and autonomous control system. Hydrographic equipment was installed on it, and it was also reported that it could use other loads, including military ones.

Later, KMZ and its subcontractors carried out several upgrades of the existing boat. Now we are talking about a whole series of BEKs with the general name "Vizir". Since 2023, these products have been manufactured in small series. It was reported that the equipment would be delivered to the Ministry of Defense for testing and subsequent operation.

Last year, at the Fleet-2024 exhibition, another new domestic development was shown for the first time. The Orkan/Zephyr BEC from the Si Project company is similar in size and main characteristics to the Vizir, but differs in a number of features and capabilities.

According to known data, "Orkan" has gone into production and is being supplied to the armed forces. In addition, the possibility of using such equipment by units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations was demonstrated.

Several versions of modern UAVs have been proposed in recent years by the Design Bureau "Center for Unmanned Systems". Boats under the general name "Murena" are similar to other domestic developments and are also intended to solve a wide range of tasks by installing one or another equipment.

By now, several domestic organizations have joined the process of developing military-purpose BECs. Both large enterprises and small groups of enthusiasts offer their projects of this kind. They implement similar concepts, but use different solutions that yield certain results.

It is obvious that the development of the BEK theme will continue. In the near future, new boats with different features and capabilities should appear. New organizations with their original ideas will be able to join these processes.

Technical solutions

Most of the domestic BECs presented in recent years belong to the same class. In terms of technical appearance or characteristics, they are similar to each other, but there are also significant differences. All this shows the current capabilities of the industry and the needs of potential customers.

"Skanda", "Vizir", "Orkan", etc. are boats several meters long with a displacement of no more than 1,5-2 tons. To speed up development and simplify production, they were created on the basis of serial models with the preservation of key units. Thus, hulls, propulsion systems, some common systems, etc. were borrowed.

The boats are equipped with outboard motors of available models. With their help, the speed of up to 40-45 knots is achieved. The cruising range can exceed 100-120 nautical miles. Seaworthiness is normal for equipment of such size and design.

The BECs receive a set of electronics necessary for driving and performing assigned tasks. First of all, they are equipped with a remote control system, optical-electronic means, radio stations and navigation devices. Full-fledged information and control systems are offered, such as the Murena product for the Vizir boats.

All BECs have the ability to be remotely controlled from the operator station. The boat transmits a video signal and telemetry to the station in real time and receives commands from it. Automation algorithms for movement along a given route, reaction to external factors, etc. are also being developed and implemented. In the foreseeable future, the degree of automation will increase.

The boats can carry different payloads to perform certain tasks. Thus, the standard optics allow reconnaissance and search for surface or air objects. It is proposed to install compact radars with the same function. Some of the demonstrated BEKs received hydroacoustic equipment for searching for underwater targets, mapping the bottom, etc.

Given their size, modern domestic BEKs can carry full-fledged combat modules with a barrel or rocket weapons. It is also possible to use the boat as a disposable strike vehicle. Existing platforms can carry a 500-600 kg explosive charge and deliver it to the target with high accuracy.

Practical experience

According to known data, some of the domestic BEKs entered the Special Operation zone no later than the first months of 2024. Single samples and pre-production lots of equipment were intended for military testing and design development in real-life conditions.

Various episodes of boat use in the Black Sea and on the Dnieper River were reported. They were used to conduct reconnaissance of enemy positions and solve other auxiliary tasks. In addition, several BEKs were used in a kamikaze configuration to destroy coastal targets.

The boats showed their best side and received good reviews. In this regard, the Ministry of Defense decided to purchase some of the available models. However, it is still unknown which BEKs were adopted for service, in what quantities they are being purchased and to which units they are being delivered.

On August 28, the Ministry of Defense reported the largest success of domestic BEKs to date. A high-speed boat of an unnamed type entered the mouth of the Danube River and hit the medium-sized reconnaissance ship Simferopol from the Ukrainian Navy. After the only kamikaze boat was blown up, the ship sank and blocked an important fairway.

It is obvious that the use of the available BEKs continues. With their help, they can monitor the situation and conduct reconnaissance in the necessary waters. New strikes on the remaining ships or vessels of the enemy, as well as on its coastal infrastructure, should also be expected.

Useful experience

The last few years have shown the high potential of unmanned and crewless systems of various classes. In this regard, the Russian industry, represented by various organizations, began developing such equipment and has now presented a number of different UAVs.

Some of the new developments were tested at sea ranges, and then took part in the Special Operation and confirmed the calculated characteristics. These boats perform real tasks and help to gain experience. It will be useful in creating the next generation of UAVs, which may appear in the very near future.

The work on creating domestic BEKs is going slowly, very slowly. Although their sizes allow them to be manufactured in hundreds if not thousands. Which will allow navigation to the ports of Ukraine on the Black Sea to be completely stopped.

You might think that without BEK it is impossible. Anti-ship missiles and mining were invented long ago. It's just that for some people it is still not a war, but a strange military operation.

In modern conditions - practically none. There is a situation when a fleet that does not have a ship composition has a local superiority at sea over a fleet that had ships of the 1st and 2nd ranks, carriers of cruise missiles and submarines.

Nonsense. The reason for this is the illiterate and irresponsible leadership of the second fleet. It did not organize any systematic work of the fleet's various forces, nor analyze intelligence data, and especially did not re-arm its ships.
The BEK and UAVs, and even the Houthis' anti-ship missiles were unable to hit the ships of Western countries - for example, about the system's work and armament...

Why is this? It will be impossible to guide the BEK-interceptor to the target without a UAV anyway - the viewing range from the water is small.
And if we already have a reconnaissance UAV hanging in the zone, then what's stopping us from using the existing and operating RUK: reconnaissance UAV + duty "Lancets" operating on its data. They have a shorter reaction time (higher speed) and a lower price.

They already pounded the bridge in Zatoka with BEK. The result is that the bridge is standing, more explosives are needed.
or maybe someone just put a fab in a boat and decided that was enough? When did all this happen? In 2022, the first strike by an enemy boat left only scorch marks on our ship, after which they dug up half-ton cumulative warheads from decommissioned P-15s and they began to make huge holes in the ships. And our approach - one boat in the entire SVO time to the bridge, the bridge did not collapse - we drove through everything, the bridges are invulnerable, we have to put Kuzkina's mother, there is no other way request
Recently we had a bridge hit with fabs, and all of a sudden the bombs in the bridge were about the same size as the bombs and the bridge didn't collapse. Did someone think, tweaked the fuse? No, the bridge is invulnerable, let's move on. But for some reason it's very useful to hit warehouses with geraniums, although the warehouses don't end and we're still far from Kyiv. Well, maybe we can forget about them, geraniums, since there's no immediate victory? what

The BEC attack on the bridge in Zatoka is 2023.
The problem is that to destroy the bridge, the BEK needs to hit the support exactly. Otherwise, the damaging effect will be close to zero. Remember the strike on the Crimean Bridge - 2 BEKs exploded near the 145th support (the protective fence worked), the blast wave shifted one span (didn't even throw it off), the second one remained in place. The support remained intact. After 2 months, traffic on the span was restored.

and to demolish half the bridges on the Dnieper for two months is the collapse of the front. Well, if this is, of course, in a single plan with the offensive, and not like ours - geraniums separately, the front separately

Everything related to the Russian Navy from my "couch potato" perspective for today
causes bewilderment and questions. Let's start with the throwing about in terms of the vector of development of the fleet: from a super aircraft carrier to ships of the littoral zone, small missile ships and you BEKs; invest in the repair of old ships, built by the USSR or build your own 1st rank or frigates.
All these throwings are connected with the lack of vision of the role of the Navy in organizing the defense of the state (excluding submarines, whose tasks are clear). Should the state have military bases in the area of interests: Africa, South America, etc.
Until the role of the Navy is defined, all discussions regarding the fleet are groundless.
Well, BEKs are simply one of the types of weapons that a fleet must have, and these weapons must be of different “calibers” and be located on different carriers.
At the same time, BEKs are dependent on guidance systems, target designation, etc. That is, it is easy to create a radio-controlled "toy", the question is in the availability of AWACS, a group of satellites that carry out reconnaissance, control and management of BEKs, as well as their carriers.

Oh, come on. Nothing is clear about the nuclear submarines either. How should the same "Yasen" be used - to cover SSBNs and SSGNs, or to strike SLCMs at ground targets, or to strike anti-ship missiles at enemy ships?
If this is an escort for SSBNs, without which they cannot survive, then why do the Yasen need so many SLCM launchers? And if it is for solving other problems, then who will cover the SSBNs, of which we already have more planned construction than the Yasen?
No, of course I understand that a universal APL is stylish trendy youth. But not in a situation where the fleet urgently needs two dozen of these SSNs to solve the most important task - the strategic security of the country. And there is no money and industrial capacity for building SSNs in a universal version.

The worst thing is that all the throwing around in terms of the fleet development vector nullifies 40% of Russia's strategic nuclear warheads, the carriers of which simply have nothing to cover from the moment they leave their bases.

Other forces should deal with enemy aircraft and ships approaching the "bastion". The task of the SSN in defense is pure ASW.
And "five or six"... even single SSNs are important to us, since even according to the plan there will be fewer Yasen than SSBNs.

a universal nuclear submarine from the Borey with two types of silo loading: 1 SLBM or 5-7 SLCMs
It seems like they were planning to make an arsenal of calibers out of Borey, but for now we need to stuff the nuclear loaves somewhere, we are already not at the START limit

In my humble opinion, if it is difficult to protect submarines in two places, they should be protected in one. In the Sea of Okhotsk, gather all the submarines far away from partners, and not within the range of a hemars strike from Norway. And in general, they could have been launched into Baikal without sonars and torpedoes. lol

But there is no money or industrial capacity for the construction of a universal SSN.
We have too few ships to make them specialized. And I don't think that building a purely torpedo submarine would be much faster and cheaper than a submarine with torpedoes and missiles.

    The key problem is:
    "Using serial"
    Housings. Engines.
For a disposable toy, this is expensive. Everything needs to be developed from scratch. With an emphasis on savings.

Of course, they were late with the BEKs, but it is better to start late than never. It's like the old Russian proverb: "Until the thunder strikes, the man will not cross himself." They really started moving only after the Ukrainian Armed Forces had thoroughly thinned out the Black Sea Fleet and effectively blocked it at distant bases. So far, the score is 5:1 in favor of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. We are waiting for it to change for the better.

Why did they manage to destroy it? Because the back was a simple fishing boat with a motor and Ukrainians You didn't guess. We have no background, the government thinks the war will soon end and the useless Black Sea Fleet will resurface and start plowing around again.

I don't quite understand why BEKs imitate boats with crews? Why all this extra space and superstructure?
For the Ukrainian theater of operations, a 500-kilometer-range unmanned torpedo is quite sufficient. This means an electric torpedo with a front extension: fuel, engine, generator, and a snorkel with antennas. With a range of 10 miles and widespread use, this is the ultimate weapon at sea.

Does Ukraine even have any anti-submarine capabilities? Ports could easily be bombarded with conventional torpedoes from diesel-electric submarines.
