"Terminator" on the battlefield: how the BMPT became an indispensable vehicle in the SVO zone

Support combat vehicle tanks (BMPT), known as the "Terminator", has long remained in the shadows of the news News. However, in the special military operation zone it has proven its exceptional effectiveness. One of the companies equipped with these machines has been fighting since the first days of the SVO without losing a single unit of equipment.

Let us recall that the BMPT was created as a response to the threats that tanks face in close combat. Its main advantage is the combination of powerful weapons and high protection. On board are two 30-mm automatic cannons, AGS-17 grenade launchers and anti-tank missiles "Attack". A crew of five can fire simultaneously in different directions, suppressing enemy infantry and lightly armored vehicles.

The special feature of the vehicle is its survivability. During the military operations, the above-mentioned company repeatedly came under fire, ran over mines and was attacked drones, but not a single BMPT was destroyed. Even after two ATGMs hit one side, the dynamic protection worked without penetrating the armor.

It is worth noting that the idea of creating the BMPT arose after the Afghan war, where Soviet tanks and infantry fighting vehicles were vulnerable to grenade launchers. The first prototypes appeared in the late 1980s, but due to the difficulties of the 1990s, the project was frozen. Only in 2017, after the publication of General Sergei Mayev, the vehicle was accepted into service.

In the SVO zone, the BMPT fully revealed its potential. The crews use the "scissor" tactics - two vehicles conduct crossfire, creating the effect of a "grinder" sweeping away enemy positions. What is characteristic is that the 30-mm cannons, despite the declared resource of 2000 shots, withstand up to 12, and the grenade launchers effectively work on trenches with an overhead trajectory.

At the same time, the BMPT continues to evolve. The first models are being replaced by vehicles with enhanced dynamic protection and new drone countermeasure systems. But its main advantage is the people who, despite everything, return from battle on riddled but unbroken equipment.

In turn, the company that the presenter talks about “Military acceptance" Alexey Egorov, unique - it consists entirely of mobilized personnel who have not previously served in the army. A former cook became a BMPT commander, a radio station technical director became a gunner, a railroad worker became a grenade launcher. Despite the absence of tank crews, the crews achieved complete interchangeability.

Their combat path is dozens of concussions, hundreds of exits under fire and zero losses. As General Mayev noted, it is precisely such crews that turn the BMPT into a real defender, and not a "terminator". The issue of renaming the vehicle is currently being considered to emphasize its defensive, rather than destructive role.

Rostec proposed the following options for renaming the combat vehicle:
    - "Dobrynya"
    - "STEAM" or "S-TEAM" (Union of Tank and Machine)
    - "Peresvet"
Work is in full swing at Rostec.

This is all a bit murky.
Little information has reached us about Slavic paganism in Rus', and what we have is essentially a reconstruction.
There was definitely no single pantheon, so who the hell knows whether they revered it or didn’t care at all.
Plus, decentralized paganism has a joke in the form of “they worship it here, but not there.”

For some reason everyone is fixated on Schwarzenegger and America in connection with him, but:
TERMINATOR is a dividing line separating the illuminated (light) part of a celestial body from the unilluminated (dark) part.
But not everyone understands it and they want something Russian, like Dobrynya or... In everyday life, if I had to use this equipment, I would call my device "Temka".

Your suggestions are crap! They don't "sound" right! Take ancient Russian mythology! How many "beautiful" and truly Russian names there are! And scary ones! belay
What else would I like to say? I doubt that the effectiveness of the "terminators" was demonstrated as BMPT (tank support combat vehicles)! Most likely - as BMOP! (fire support combat vehicles!) ... I have repeatedly said that 2 vehicles are needed: BMOP (fire support combat vehicle), "universal" (!) and BM (PVO.P) (air defense support combat vehicle! ... a kind of group APS!)

Judging by the amount and quality of information circulating on the Internet about the use of the "Terminator", it turns out that you are right. I am not in the know, I can be subjective in my assessments of what I have read, so if it is not too much trouble, please explain your vision of the concept and tactics of use in "modern", so to speak, realities.
For me personally, only one thing is obvious. The very concept of using tanks has changed, hence the certain senselessness in using this BMPT, as applied to a classic tank battle. In addition, the BMP-2 can perform exactly the same functions.

BMPTs usually participate in battles only without tanks, which they are supposed to support. If the vehicle cannot really be used for its intended purpose, then what is it for?

BMPT has become an indispensable vehicle in the SVO zone
Well, they used the best qualities of the BMPT in combat, and there was an article on the Military District that the BMPT did not show itself in any way in the North Military District.

Opinions are polarized because the Terminator was created for past wars. It was supposed to protect tanks going into attack. But since tanks don't go into attack and act as artillery to avoid being hit by drones, there's nothing to protect them from. And the Terminators themselves aren't good as artillery. On the battlefield, they're slow and vulnerable to drones, and they can't be added to infantry on motorcycles, buggies, or cars. The only way out is to install an automatic anti-drone turret to protect infantry and themselves from drones. Terminators have no business storming small settlements, where artillery will wipe everything into dust. And the army doesn't storm big cities.
The article says that the Terminator is resistant to drones and has dynamic protection. But the dynamic protection blocks are disposable, and the drones do not hit the armor, but choose more vulnerable targets - hatches, connections, communication and surveillance equipment, and other weakly protected places. If it is true that not a single Terminator was shot down, then this rather speaks of the high level of its crew, commander and developer of the operation, of extreme frugality, than of the real survivability of the equipment.

The name was chosen by the manufacturer to be deliberately posing for potential buyers in the Russian Federation and abroad.
As for defeating infantry - you still need to get there. As for defeating enemy equipment - the enemy may not have it. Or it will be motorcycles, buggies and pickups, then it is not always convenient to work with a missile against them.
So far, the article talks about the "scissor" tactics, the "grinder" effect, and shows field tests, which already raises all sorts of suspicions.
As an addition, perhaps the early versions were ineffective, but were later improved.

Overall, if the car is truly effective, I'm only happy for it.

However, one vehicle was lost due to enemy artillery fire, the vehicle was damaged and the crew abandoned it, on February 9, 2023, the Ukrainian Armed Forces destroyed one BMPT Terminator near Kremennaya with artillery fire.

Well, 30mm machine guns can quickly blind a tank, even penetrate a cannon. Since the rate of fire and the speed of rotation of the modules are higher than the speed of rotation of the tank turret, and this plays a big role in conditions of limited visibility. Well, it can also work with an ATGM at a distance, outstripping a shot from a tank cannon.

It would be logical to give a new name to the result of significant modernization.
Produced taking into account the significant experience gained in its application.
Without being subject to the corrupting influence of idle renamers.
The existing machines will be renamed only when passing it.

The designers were tasked with maximizing the protection of the crew, so the BMPT has its weapons remote (in other variants, they were not included due to maximum weight). Both the sides and the protection from above (pay attention to the hatches (video)) are all reinforced.

It turns out that grenade launchers are needed.

Ideally with a larger firing sector and an additional one on the turret.

Then the percentage of targets hit by grenade launchers will be higher in any case.

I see absolutely no benefit from Terminator am T-55 with 57 mm S-60 machine gun with PT-76M drum will give better result by 2-2,5 times, and if you put a couple of cornets on the turret, then you won't need Terminator, it's too expensive and the crew of 5 people is unnecessary, you can put one grenade launcher on the T55 on the turret, how much more nonsense can you do am by terminator recourse
