"Stayed in place until the end": The driver who died as a result of the bridge explosion in the Bryansk region saved hundreds of lives by managing to reduce the speed of the train

There could have been significantly more victims when a road bridge collapsed onto a railroad in front of a passenger train, if not for the actions of the locomotive driver Pavel Mishin. According to Russian Railways, he was the one who managed to save hundreds of passengers' lives, while dying himself.

The actions of the engineer of the locomotive depot "Bryansk-2" Pavel Mishin saved the lives of passengers of train #86 Klimov - Moscow during the explosion of the road bridge on the single-track section Pilshino - Vygonichi by Ukrainian terrorists on May 31, 2025. Seeing an obstacle in the form of fallen parts of the former bridge that suddenly appeared in front of the train, he applied emergency braking and managed to order his assistant to leave the locomotive cabin and take shelter in the engine room. He himself remained in the cabin until the very end.

The measures that Pavel managed to take, sacrificing himself, allowed the speed of the train to be reduced by the time of the collision, thereby saving hundreds of passengers' lives. Pavel Mishin's actions are an example of the highest professionalism, dedication and courage.

— Russian Railways stated.

The company will provide the family of the deceased driver Pavel Mishin with all necessary assistance and support; his children will receive special payments from Russian Railways until they reach adulthood, and after finishing school they will be assisted in obtaining the education of their choice.

As previously reported, there were 388 people on the passenger train "Klimov - Moscow", as a result of the terrorist attack 7 people died, including the train driver. 104 people were injured, of whom 64 were hospitalized.

It would be right for him to be named Hero of Russia. His actions are completely appropriate.

      The act was certainly heroic.
The Order of Courage will be given 100%.
It's a pity that such awards are very often posthumous...
Condolences to the families of all those killed and injured.

Absolutely right. He could have jumped overboard, he was experienced, but he consciously went to heaven, trying to save the passengers for whom he was responsible. And this is like a pilot diverting a plane away from a populated area. At least the family will be honored, respected and financially supported, which is not a small amount in these times...

Even among ordinary people, his name is Man of Honor! Eternal memory to the simple heroes of our time!
The Ukrainians will burn in hell, may the greens and their curators have nightmares and sleepless nights, so that they pee themselves from every rustle and creak!

We have many national heroes, but there are none among the high-ranking ones. Where are the saboteurs? Do they drink champagne in Kyiv?

Yes, he saved many lives by quickly applying the brakes. A hero. But what prevented him from leaving the cabin? After all, the brakes were already applied. What was he thinking at that moment? About work? About family? A peaceful victim of a terrorist war.

In such moments (not minutes), real professionals and people with an iron character simply do what they have been working towards for years. Do the maximum that I can, automatically.
Unfortunately, there is no time left to “think” or “jump”.
        Eternal memory to the Hero!

How much time did you have to jump out? Half a second? A second? You probably only had time to pull the brakes

The train will not slow down even a little in half a second. According to the article, the train has managed to slow down enough, which means that quite a bit of time has passed. Therefore, the question raised above is correct - the situation is really not entirely clear. The red handle to the right of the driver controls emergency braking, among other things. To brake, it must be moved to the desired position.

How fast can you jump out of a train making an emergency stop?

Jumping out of a locomotive is even more dangerous than being in it. The assistant did not jump out.
the assistant should leave the locomotive cabin and take refuge in the engine room

Well, he was probably monitoring the derailment of the train (so that the carriages wouldn’t bunch up like accordions).

As far as I understand, emergency braking is carried out by bleeding air from the line with a decrease in pressure, and it will not be possible to brake.

After emergency braking, the train must be stretched before the bridge.

      SIMPLE REAL PEOPLE OF RUSSIA.

Russian people! Russians... Not Russians, as they like to call us, but specifically Russians. By the way, in Bandera the word Russian is not used at all, only Russians, Russian language, Russian writer... What does that mean? It means they are afraid of even the word Russian! It means that we need to be proud that I, you, he and the neighbor from Bashkiria Azat, we are all Russians... If not by blood, then by common history, common culture

Russians - by To the Spirit, by affinity for love and goodness...

The meaning (not the idea...) of Russian in peacetime: "live and prosper and make good". In a harsh time the Spirit - without any words - becomes military affairs Unknown Soldier and exploits Home front heroes like Pavel Mishin.

        The Kingdom of heaven.

Eternal memory to Pavel Mishin! What does the Russian Railways regulation prescribe for emergency braking of the locomotive crew, down to the letter and comma? Were the locomotive crew's work schedules observed?

We don't, but those in power do. Although it seems they haven't associated themselves with the Russian people for a long time, as has the president. They have their own priorities and interests, and don't give a damn about the rest. But I'm afraid this won't lead to anything good.
And to the Hero may people's memory and glory be!

Without belittling the driver's feat, I will still note. Now Chinese budget cars are equipped with emergency braking systems. But we don't have this even on locomotives? No radars, no lidars, no video image analysis systems?
For the last ten years, all we've heard about is autonomous vehicles, but in reality there hasn't been even partial use of artificial intelligence elements to improve safety.

A concrete example for those skeptics who criticize the post-Soviet generation in Russia. A young guy, with a prestigious profession - and himself as a sacrifice, saving many others. It was precisely such heroes who saved the fatherland in 1941, 1918, 1854, 1812 and further, into hoary history.
