Today we publish the memories of the participants of those events, the commander and fighters of the 2th paratrooper platoon (Carmin 2) of the 8th parachute regiment of the French marines (8 e RPIMa). There are no tactics, no figures, no ratings. The paratroopers confirm - in that battle, they really did everything they could. And as professionals, with dignity coming out of the deadly whirlwind of lead and steel, and as people — without abandoning those who could still be helped.
PROLOGUE
One o'clock. Surubi district, mountain range approximately 40 kilometers east of Kabul. Altitude 1700 meters. A convoy of 20 vehicles — French armored personnel carriers (VAB), Afghan army and police pickups, and American-supported airborne Hummers — stands at a rocky slope. Four French armor vehicles still climb 400 meters to the village of Sper Kunday, land paratroopers, and occupy firing positions at the outskirts of the city. Further the path rises steeply uphill. The machine guns of the armored vehicles point their trunks at the target of the French patrol, the pass, and the paratrooper 22, commanded by the foreman Gaetan Evrahr, is beginning to rise. With them is a doctor from the regiment of the Foreign Legion and an Afghan translator. They have to go another half a kilometer up the hill, to a height of about 2000 meters.
THE BATTLE

“As soon as the mountain trail starts to wag among the rocks, I rearrange the platoon in the column. With heavy luggage we move slowly. Plus damn hot. Nevertheless, I order the group commanders to speed up the move.
All heavy body armor, plus, each carries six stores of twenty-five rounds of ammunition. One guy on the rise gets heatstroke and stays behind with the dowry medic from the second parachute regiment of the legion.
I request snipers that they are watching ahead. They answer that nothing and that the first group is located a hundred meters from the pass.
13.45. At the last steep bend of the path, a few dozen meters from the pass, the platoon falls into hell - it is covered with grenade explosions and machine-gun bursts. This is an ambush.
- We instantly disperse over the fragments of rocks, which littered the slope. Our position is not important - the platoon was stretched for more than a hundred meters. A quarter of an hour the enemy's hurricane fire crumbles earth and stone around us.
To hide from a shower of bullets, it remains only to push the ground harder.
- I called on the radio advanced group. They report to me that my deputy and two other guys were killed (radio operator and Afghan translator. - Editor's note).
The roar is stunning. Bullets knock clouds of suffocating dust out of the ground.
- I'm trying to hide behind a big stone. With me there are five more, including a radio operator and a sniper. A few more guys lay down just a few meters away from us, but I don’t see them.
Bullets continue to continuously hammer the ground in front of a group of Evrara. Getting to the wounded is simply impossible.
- The commander of one of our groups makes his way to me to report on the situation. He staggers and deathly pale - was wounded in the stomach. Put it on the ground, remove the body armor and helmet, bandage. Shoot from somewhere from the top of the ridges, and left and right. We are under crossfire. (A group of 50 Talibs launched an attack from the southern slope and from the village of Spur Kundai at that moment.)
Marines are shot, but do not see the real enemy. Splinters of stones fly everywhere.
“My face is bleeding, the guys near are injured, some in the leg, some in the arm.” The sniper manages to lay a couple of Taliban, who were trying to secretly go around us on the ridge of the mountain. But here we hear the sound of shots of Famas assault rifles coming up the slope.
All - the platoon began to respond. The guys are fighting. And they fight well.
The machine guns of the French armored personnel carriers are beaten in pass bursts, holding back the Taliban and allowing the platoon to get out of the trap. The paratroopers are fighting off the opposing adversary, but they are dispersed around the battlefield in twos, threes, or even one by one. The Taliban are trying to get closer, the marines drive them away with rifle fire and throw hand grenades at them.
- Sergeant Kazzaro shouts to me that the enemy is very close. The connection with the troop platoon in Spur Kundai is interrupted, but I manage to contact the captain at our base in Torah. “Act quickly! I was left without support! I'm under heavy fire! This is Bazeus, captain! This is Bazei! ”Bazei is a town where the French marines squeezed the Prussians back in 1870. And here in the same deadly grip hit group Evrara. After 25 minutes after the start of the battle, the foreman requests air support. Simultaneously, reinforcements leave the Torah (FOB Tora - the base of the marines in 10 km from the pass.). (According to the official version, Carmin 2 requested reinforcement in 15: 52, and air support - in 16: 10). First two F-15 attack aircraft arrive. Ten minutes later, armored American A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft began circling over the battlefield. They are specially created to support ground troops, they have low speed and greater accuracy of weapons systems, but ... marines with the enemy share a few meters, and the pilots are forced to return. This the Taliban and sought. Evrar injured.
- I feel a strong blow to the shoulder, but while I can move my hand. The pain is quite acute, but there is no time to think about the wound.

- We are pressed into the ground, the bullets whistle very close. They do not shoot in bursts, but hit them with sniper rifles. I see our sniper taking a talib. He falls on the rock, and his sniper rifle rolls behind him.
Evrar's hand is a walkie-talkie, but her wire is dangerously stretched. The transmitter itself lies in the zone of fire. The radio operator is busy rescuing the wounded group commander - he does heart massage and mouth-to-mouth breathing. Suddenly a bullet pierces his hand. He sits down and shows Evraru wounded. Blood is flowing through the hand.
- I shout: “Throw! Keep saving the guy. Your wound will deal with later. " He looks at me, and on his face - the very slight grin that appeared every time I gave him a beating, or during hard training.
Bullets click dangerously close. The radio operator sees that the radio continues to lie under fire. "Commander, I have to pick her up!" He rushes into the sea of fire, picks up the radio and returns to the foreman.

Position is deadly. The marines create a rampart, firing their ammunition in full bursts along the full store in the direction of the ridge to cover their foreman, who needs to change positions for effective command. Sergeant Roman Andrieu (23 of the year, group commander, seniority - three years).His four armored personnel carriers with crews (a total of 8 people - the Carmin 2 vehicle) remained in positions at the village, and their 12,7 mm machine guns are aimed at the pass and provide fire support to Evrar's platoon.

A group of Sergeant Andrieu is firing from all machine guns. Medium caliber covers the ridges of mountains with fire. For the Taliban, the Andrije Broniki are becoming a major problem ... and a target.
- My machine gunners are sitting in the open turret, their heads and shoulders are not protected here. Drivers lie on the ground in front of the armor. The French Marines are a self-sufficient and independent striking force of the French Armed Forces. It includes military units of various purposes. The first airborne regiment is the French counterpart of the British Special Forces SAS, the second, third and eighth airborne regiments are airborne. In Poitiers stands tank regiment. There are three artillery regiments of the marine corps.
