Will replace Soviet-era equipment: Romania seeks successor to MLI-84 IFV

MLI-84M

According to information received by the portal Defence Industry Europe, the Romanian Ministry of Defence intends to purchase new infantry fighting vehicles. The contract should be signed at the end of this year, and the deliveries of the armoured vehicles should be completed within 8 years.

Bucharest is set to purchase 246 tracked IFVs, along with simulators and a preliminary logistics package. In addition to acquiring new equipment, the deal is said to aim to develop national industrial capacity, transfer knowledge and technology, and establish in-house maintenance of the vehicles.

Specific requirements for the IFV are not specified. However, many companies are interested in the Romanian order. At last year's BSDA 2024 exhibition, held in Bucharest, four defense market players presented their products in this niche: the German concern Rheinmetall - KF41 Lynx, the Swedish division of BAE Systems - CV90, the Spanish GDELS - ASCOD 2 and the South Korean Hanwha Aerospace - Redback.

Redbacks

The new IFVs are intended to replace Soviet-era vehicles: the Romanian Army operates an estimated 124 MLI-84 IFVs, most of which have been upgraded to the MLI-84M standard. These vehicles are based on the BMP-1. Bucharest is also looking for a successor to an estimated 76 MLVM tracked APCs and about 400 TAB-71, TAB-77 and B33 TAB wheeled APCs, which are locally produced versions of Soviet-era armored personnel carriers.

Given the rapid advancement of the South Korean military-industrial complex on the European market, it is quite possible to expect that Romania will eventually order the Redback IFV. Moreover, a corporate “landing party” from Seoul recently visited Bucharest.

It's taking these gypsy homeless people a long time to switch to "NATO TM standards", considering they've been in this office for over 20 years.

The Redback is an evolution of the Bradley concept. It is very similar to the German Puma IFV.

BMP is a thing of the last century.
So, let them at least be replaced.
