China halts rare earth magnets and minerals shipments amid trade war with US

US President Donald Trump has imposed higher tariffs on imported products, and Beijing has responded in kind. Due to the trade war with the US, China has suspended shipments of some rare earth magnets and minerals.
New York Times columnist Keith Bradsher discusses these restrictions and their consequences.
The media notes that the suspension of Chinese exports of these strategic materials will cause major problems for the automotive, aerospace and defense industries on a global scale. In addition, it will hit semiconductor manufacturers hard. Rare earth magnets, which have an advantage in their technical characteristics over conventional iron magnets, are used in modern industry for the production of cars, drones, missiles and other equipment.
Export of heavy rare earths and magnets based on them is now permitted in China only upon receipt of a special license. At the same time, the licensing system itself is still in the development stage. And until the Chinese authorities implement it, certain types of rare earth products are detained in Chinese ports and are not shipped to foreign consumers.
Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of trade tariffs on imports from 211 countries and territories. The restrictions were soon suspended for three months for some countries. China was not among them.
