What will we fight with tomorrow?

What will we fight with tomorrow?

A question on the merits. Today, the military world is changing so much that it makes your head spin. Tactical methods are changing, types of weapons are changing, general obsolescence is happening at a simply catastrophic rate, and it is very difficult to say where we will end up in five years.

To begin with, I will make one consideration that may outrage many: the most recent conflict in Ukraine is taking place in full accordance with the canons of the First World War.

In fact, this is actually true. During the First World War, the positions of the warring parties were at a fairly decent distance from each other. Yes, if at the very beginning the distance between the lines of trenches was 200-300 meters, then closer to the end of the war it increased to 1000 meters. On the one hand, no one interfered with inflicting damage on the enemy with machine guns and snipers, on the other hand, such an increase in distance guaranteed the implementation of protective measures in the event that the enemy began to release gas. This was indeed widespread, since if the wind blew towards the enemy's positions, gas cylinders were more reliable than the rather capricious chemical shells.

The distance between the positions was necessarily filled with mines and barbed wire. And one should not discount the mortars and guns that processed the enemy positions with enviable regularity. But it was really not easy to overcome the so-called "gray zone", which truly became a death zone for tens of thousands of soldiers of the warring armies. Even the appearance of tanks didn't improve the situation much.

Nowadays, the “gray” zone, according to information from participants in those events, has become even larger. Its width in different places reaches three kilometers, so the use of small arms becomes impossible. And it is not needed, in fact, over this territory hangs around the clock drones both sides, that is, so far they have not entered into air battles en masse, although there have already been reports of cases of ramming.

Mines are the main means of obstruction

There are mines everywhere, mines were placed manually at different times by different units, mines were placed with the help of minelayers, a mine is the most common thing found in the "gray" zone weapon. Wire fences are a thing of the past, and there is no particular need for them.

And, naturally, Drones. "Eyes" in the sky constantly, around the clock. And if the enemy detects any movement, FPV drones immediately come into play. It gets to the point where drones hunt for single fighters and pairs, there is no need to talk about groups of several people.

weaponry

Let's take a little break and look at the range of weapons that modern infantry has today, in light of their use in a high-tech conflict like the one taking place in Ukraine.

1. Automatic. This weapon, of course, will not go anywhere, since it is personal. It still has a long service ahead of it.

2. Machine gun. Both the light machine gun, which is a good substitute for a sniper rifle, since it has a greater, more reliable firing range than a machine gun, and its heavy counterpart are very useful both in defense and in attack.

3. Sniper rifle. Yes, it is a useful weapon, but using it has become much more difficult thanks to drones. A sniper pair, no matter how well they camouflage themselves, can become a target for a drone.

4. Hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher. As an anti-tank weapon it is practically useless, except, perhaps, in urban areas.

5. RPO-A "Shmel" infantry rocket flamethrower. An effective close-range weapon, effective because it can be used in combat offensive formations, especially in cities.

6. Rocket-propelled assault grenade. Relevant during any offensive operations, especially in urban areas.

7. Unmanned aerial vehicle. Reconnaissance, surveillance, means of destruction. The reason, in fact, for the total obsolescence of the following types of weapons.

8. "Dronoboy" or "Trench" EW", or UAV suppressor. In fact, the only means of countering UAVs at the low level.

And we rise a little above the platoon level.

9. Automatic mounted grenade launcher. A weapon that has proven itself excellently in mobile mechanized groups, but in defense (and it was intended as a defensive weapon) the AGS is useless precisely because it is easily detected by drones and just as easily destroyed.

10. ATGM. This can finally be added to the list of completely useless weapons. Any armored vehicles are much safer for crews to destroy with FPV drones from safe distances.

11. Mortar. If we talk about the 82-mm "Podnos", then its range of 3 to 4 km raises doubts about the advisability of its use, since at such a distance the mortar is very easily detected from the air and destroyed.

The situation is no better with the 2S12 120mm caliber. The firing range of this mortar is greater, about 7 meters, but this, as you understand, does not guarantee the same problems from UAVs.

It is somewhat better if the mortar is on a wheeled chassis, i.e. "Nona". This can allow you to leave the firing position and not get hit. But in general, the mortar has become a very vulnerable weapon precisely because its firing range allows you to be in the zone of destruction of drones.

As for heavy weapons such as MLRS, howitzers artillery, then everything is simple with them - the further from the line of contact, the better.

12. Armored vehicles. Tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers. Currently, they suffer losses almost exclusively from UAVs, since they are easily detected and destroyed by them.

13. Armored vehicles, SUVs and other delivery vehicles. They have a better chance due to the speed at which they can simply get away from drones.

If you understand, accept and realize all of the above, it turns out that a modern infantryman begins to live and fight according to the principle of "I carry everything with me." In reality, even a truck is a very tasty target for UAV operators, and what can we say if a single fighter is already a target, what can we say about weapons systems, for the maintenance of which group calculations are required, or armored vehicles.

In general, in 2025 it can already be stated that artillery and mortars have lost out in effectiveness to drones

Yes, artillery can still operate over large areas from a distance, the same applies to MLRS, but in terms of accuracy and effectiveness they are inferior to tactical ones. rocket complexes and drones. And if missiles, ballistic and cruise, are very expensive weapons, then with UAVs everything is very transparent: maximum efficiency at a minimum price.

If we leave aside the detachments of UAV operators and the electronic warfare fighters who counter them, we get the following picture: already today, all combat operations are conducted by small combat groups, comparable to a motorized rifle squad, and the active tactical unit is a pair.

Naturally, under the cover of electronic warfare and their own reconnaissance drones, and in the future, most likely, fighter drones will appear. And the picture, when 2-4 people in heavy protective suits like "Monolith" (in fact, according to reviews, a really chic set, saves) will go under the cover of a couple of reconnaissance in the air, a couple of fighters on standby and with attack drones on their backs at the ready.

That is, support will not be provided by tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, mortars and snipers, but by operators several kilometers in the rear.

Five years ago, everyone would have laughed and said: “Well, the author decided to go through science fiction…” But today it’s practically a reality, and tomorrow it will become commonplace.

The "meat assaults" of 2023, which were similar to the brutal attacks of the First World War, when masses of people simply went to the enemy positions without thinking about losses, will, to the great joy of most, remain in the past. Mainly because the human reserve, it turns out, is not infinite, and on the other hand, it will still lose to the reserve of drones, which can be raised not so much endlessly, but often and with the proper effect. And fifty fighters going to attack a stronghold are much easier to scatter with drones than a well-covered small group.

Hence, "cover" is not so much striking enemy firing points as fighting enemy FPV drones, since they are more dangerous than machine guns and mortars. The only question is to give your drones the opportunity to detect enemy firing points and send their FPVs there, and not let the enemy do the same.

And here is where that very “density of fire”, which has been so valued since the First World War, begins to fade into the background.

Yes, even at Carne and Somme, when infantry ranks went on the attack on enemy positions, from where a stream of lead poured out from rifle and machine gun barrels, grenades, shells, mines flew towards them. The losses were enormous, and by the end of the war the armies of many countries received mobile weapons that could be called heavy with a stretch, but were capable of at least somehow providing the advancing infantry with the opportunity to resist the enemy with something other than rifles and to depend less on their artillery.

Moreover, in those days, artillery was not the ideal of precision and often covered its own. One of the most famous characters of the first half of the 20th century in Germany received his first order precisely for being able to stop his regiment from being destroyed by his own artillery.

Thus, the infantry was equipped with hastily created light machine guns, mortars, over-barrel grenade launchers, small-caliber mortars, flamethrowers - that is, weapons that could be carried by an infantryman or a crew of maximum two people and that could help suppress enemy fire weapons.

The Second World War did not spoil us with new things, but some armies received rocket launchers like the Bazooka or Panzerfaust, light guns that could easily follow the attacking infantry, self-propelled artillery and MLRS.

And the third wave of progress in the 60s and 70s brought anti-tank missiles, MANPADS, and automatic grenade launchers.

As a result, the infantry/motorized rifle platoon has become a stable combat unit, capable of solving almost any tactical task with the help of its own set of weapons or with attached means of destruction such as MANPADS and flamethrowers.

And here comes the fourth wave. And it consists of nothing but UAVs and “drone-killers.” So little and so much at the same time.

Let's think: what do all types of infantry weapons that were invented in the last century have in common?

The answer is simple: these weapons, absolutely everything, from a rifle to an automatic grenade launcher, require direct visibility of the target. That is, they fire direct fire. A small exception are mortars and underbarrel grenade launchers (aka grown-up mortars), which can throw their shells behind some object. True, this does not have a positive effect on accuracy, but it is what it is.

Rifle, machine gun, pistol, submachine gun, machine gun, grenade launcher, MANPADS, ATGM, flamethrower and so on, right up to the "drone-killer" - all these types of weapons require direct fire. Yes, since their invention they have become more compact, lighter, more accurate, but the essence of their use has not changed at all. The shooter/operator must see the target.

This is the problem: if the operator/shooter must see the target, then the target/targets can see the shooter. And, accordingly, give him a full program from all barrels.

Here I will recall my material from 2015, the conversation was with the fighters of the LPR People's Militia, including about weapons. And in the conversation I asked the anti-tank operator about the ammunition, isn't it too much - two missiles? The answer was simple: weirdo-man, who will let us shoot a third time? The first - the enemy realized what was flying, the second - where from. On the third, only a little soot will remain from us.

That's the whole point of a weapon that works from a stationary position.

And now a new type of weapon appears that can take off from behind the front line completely unnoticed, but "look" around with the operator's eyes and work precisely on direct fire. In addition, it is not disposable, like a missile, it can be returned, reloaded, refueled, retargeted.

But the main thing is that there is no need to place the operator on the front line to provide him with direct visibility of the target. Hence the very high survivability of weapons platforms located far from the front line. Of course, such long-range weapons as MLRS guided missiles, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles have not been cancelled, but just try to imagine what a UAV operator looks like in a dugout located in a forest or a basement of a house, as a target for such weapons?

Of course, UAVs are not an ideal weapon, they are still hampered by weather conditions: heavy rain, snow, wind, fog. The smoke of the battlefield also has a negative effect, but things like multi-day torrential rains or sandstorms (say, for Syria or Iraq, for example) are not such frequent occurrences.

UAVs are definitely inferior in power to missiles or guided bombs of aircraft, but they have an undeniable advantage: speed of response.

Situation: An enemy column was detected using reconnaissance drones. How long will it take to transmit the data to higher headquarters, which will contact aviation, how much time will it take to prepare the planes, to give orders and coordinate? In general, it happened, and more than once, that strikes fell on empty places. Attack drones, raised from the same clearings as the scouts, are capable, if not of blowing the column into smoke, then of quickly causing it significant damage.

Well, what if we are talking about the fact that an aircraft that costs tens of millions of dollars can simply be detected and shot down by an enemy Defense… Here the advantage of UAVs in terms of financial losses is simply enormous. And a bright future, unlike other types of weapons.

For example, a tank

Five years ago, it was the most powerful machine in the land theater of military operations, capable of solving almost any task on the battlefield. To support, so to speak, the infantry with armor and fire. And indeed, the armor absorbed damage from all types of weapons fired at the tank, the defense system put up smoke screens if the lasers of the same ATGMs began to aim, grenades with finely dispersed suspensions were fired, deceiving other guidance systems, the cannon swept away everything within the line of sight.

Tanks do not fight against tanks (in fact, they do fight), but in combat, a tank has plenty of targets: infantry support armored vehicles, pillboxes, bunkers and other fortified strongholds, infantry entrenched in buildings, ATGM crews and much more - all of this could be destroyed by a tank.

But alas, a kamikaze drone is capable of destroying all targets at which the tank barrel is aimed, and the tank itself too. And it can do so as effectively as a guided artillery shell or a tactical missile system. From a safe distance and guaranteed.

And if we consider that FPV drones with fiber optic control, that is, not afraid of almost the entire line of electronic warfare with a few exceptions, today fly 12-15 kilometers, that is, they simply perfectly replace the Gvozdika-type self-propelled guns, operating in the frontline zone... Just in the area that has always been the artillery zone, then you involuntarily begin to think about how much howitzers with a firing range of up to 20 km will be needed tomorrow.

Of course, operators sitting in shelters and launching hundreds of drones is a bit fantastic, but in any fantasy there is a drop of the future.

But already today, the division of the entire frontline zone into three zones of destruction (UAVs – up to 10 km deep, missile systems such as HIMARS or Tornado-S – up to 100 km, ballistic missiles such as Iskander or ATACMS – up to 300-400 km) is real and leaves no room for barrel artillery as visible and easily destroyed.

The only time artillery will be useful is during major offensive operations, when it is necessary to create a simple barrage of fire to suppress absolutely all enemy weapons. True, here we can draw the following analogy: a UAV is a sword strike, artillery is shooting shrapnel. Something will be hit, but not necessarily and not very accurately.

Yes, the changes will be more noticeable in the trenches. Tanks will not lose their power and relevance if they are reliably covered by electronic warfare and air defense systems (which, apparently, will have to be modified to destroy fiber-optic UAVs), the same applies to armored vehicles in general.

Mortars, anti-tank missiles, and heavy machine guns will be removed from infantry weapons due to their complete uselessness; what will remain are personal small arms, assault missiles, rocket-propelled flamethrowers, drones, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

This will definitely make the infantryman more mobile and able to move, but on faster vehicles that can evade the FPV drone, and in smaller groups. Maybe yes, in pairs and individual vehicles, dispersing people and equipment as much as possible so as not to attract unnecessary attention. A reconnaissance drone is a dangerous weapon, but it has a limited field of view, and it is still a person who is looking, not the artificial intelligence of a high-performance computer.

Today we are witnessing the birth of a new tactic, born of a new weapon.

It is clear that it will not be included in regulations and instructions for a long time, but it is true. Since time immemorial, the concentration of superior forces in the main direction of attack has been considered a guarantee of victory in battle. Even Hannibal beat the Romans in the Second Punic War precisely by striking where the Roman army had the least combat-ready units. In later times, commanders used reserves precisely to create an advantage in a certain area of the battle.

Nowadays, on the ruins of the practice of ramming attacks with large masses of equipment and other attributes of the past, under the attacks of drones, the practice of actions in dispersed and maximally mobile groups or small units is being born.

Five years ago we discussed the actions of battalion tactical groups as some kind of innovation. Today there is no talk at all about using BTGs, all tactics are built at the platoon-company level. Not breakthroughs, but hidden infiltrations and bypasses.

True, there is one point here... Once upon a time, a tank on the battlefield was a nightmare for everyone. There was a time when the whole world sighed for the Bayraktar and Javelin, which seemed to be something so invincible and technologically perfect. Something like the F-22 stealth aircraft. The tank, however, still remains, but its significance has greatly decreased. And no one really remembers the Bayraktar and Javelin anymore - they have gone into oblivion. history.

Perhaps, in the next few years, there will be another round of technical progress, and all tactics will have to be changed again, but today it cannot be denied that drones have not only produced technical and technological revolutions, but have also significantly reshaped the art of war. But in the history of mankind, there have been many such revolutions since the moment when man seriously took up the extermination of his own kind. This should not be forgotten, because development does not end here and there will be new rounds.

But these days, soldiers will have to put aside some of their traditional weapons for a plastic contraption that has changed the entire military world.

Believe it or not, but in our time the following questions are relevant: “How did the best army in the world allow the capture of the Kursk region and what prevents us from breaking the teeth of those who want to fight with Russia once and for all?”

      Mikhail Evgrafovich noted long ago
      — When and what bureaucrat was not convinced that Russia is a pie that can be freely approached and snacked on? There are legions of rascals who speak of the "state" but think of a pie with government filling. In order to steal successfully, you only need to have agility and greed. Greed is especially necessary because you can end up in court for a minor theft.

If I fall asleep and wake up in a hundred years and they ask me what is happening in Russia now, I will answer: they drink and steal ...

Let's say that in all countries railways serve for transportation, but in our country they also serve for theft.

Many tend to confuse two concepts: “Fatherland” and “Your Excellency”.

Russian authorities should keep their people in a state of constant amazement.

Next year will mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, but the relevance has not gone away.

Here is Klimov's article from May 06, 2022.
          Here is my comment:
I can suggest the following steps:
          1. Each unit of armored vehicles will be chased by several UAVs of various purposes (reconnaissance, destruction, destruction of the crew, capture of the unit, etc.).
          2. Then a swarm of UAVs will rush behind each fighter.

Almost 3 years have passed. And so it all happened.
          What happens next:
          1. UAVs will attack in swarms not in hundreds as now, but in thousands, then in hundreds of thousands. This is right on the way.
          2. China and the United States are developing humanoid android systems that will also enter the battle, first in the form of training groups, then in hundreds, and then in thousands.
          3. A unified battlefield network, where all units will not only exchange information, but will act as a single strike system under the control of network AI.

There will be land mines with EMP to disable electronics over large areas!

As drone fighters, flying drones called maskites will be created, which will protect objects from FPV drones in swarms, stupidly landing on it and exploding

People have been talking about EMP landmines for 40 years now. There is not a single development in action.

When did we get robot vacuum cleaners?! I came across a video here that they were invented in the USSR back in 1976 (they showed it in the Fitil newsreel). When were wire-controlled tanks invented?! Where are they now?! Where are thousands of unmanned trucks, tractors and combines driving along roads and fields?! And if drones go in a big cloud, they can be swept away with a remotely detonated 152 mm shrapnel shell. But that's not certain. Each drone still needs a separate person - an analogy with an aircraft carrier - in reality, not all of them can take off at once, and when the last plane takes off, the first one already needs to return for refueling and reloading. And an emergency on the deck and you don't have an alternate airfield... One of the reasons why aircraft carriers are useless. AI for controlling drones will not be available anytime soon.

The shame of our military-industrial complex is that neither before the war, nor for more than 3 years, the SVO never put into production small-caliber shells (even 57 mm) with remote/programmable detonation. When it was possible already 20 years ago to stupidly copy the same AHEAD shot in the caliber of 35 × 228 mm, which was developed in the late 1980s. Or the 30 mm AHEAD shot.

              https://rg.ru/2024/04/21/oblako-iz-stali.html
but ask about these shells at the front: are they in the case?
I'm afraid the answer will be as vague and unclear as the question:
The Ukrainian bridge in Zatoka was finally destroyed (in the fourth year of the war!) or not?

It turns out, judging by the bravura news, at least for me, we have everything, but whether it is at the front and in what quantities is a big question. At the same time, rg.ru is considering the issue of using it against ground targets, which is certainly important, but we also need to fight drones and UAVs. And here the matter is more complicated. Here is a bundle of radar, automatic fire control system with automatic aiming and remote detonation installations. All these systems have long been known, but in terms of small-caliber artillery (30 and less), apparently the problems are in miniaturization and in the fact that there is no one to give some subjects a stirrer in the rear.

Moreover, there is simply no such figure on the political horizon - a strong-willed personality with a team of like-minded people. Besides, where is the strategy for Russia's development? Capitalism in the form in which it exists and in which it is being built by the participants of the RSPP congress is a sure-fire losing game. Russia has only a few allies with whom it can start creating something...
We began to perceive the perverted mind as thoughtful multi-move plans and grandmaster's play... But what in reality? Well, we'll hold out until 2036, well, we'll build this An-2, well, a couple of dozen more Russian billionaires will appear...
And what and who will lead the country further and how much of the population will remain in this country, including representatives of the titular nation?
If internal unrest begins, all the rats will flee the Russian galley with their capital and trunks as part of their clans...
Corruption, embezzlement, vanity, blatant profanation in the personnel, many of whom, by today's standards, will not even last until 2036...
Imagine what will happen to the youth when they get tired of listening to tales about a bright capitalist future and believing the promises of people who themselves do not remember what they promised...

BUT, it means that it is necessary to look for those people who are the bearers of knowledge. These are the units on which this general intellectual potential lies and which determine the levels and rates and directions of the evolution of these masses.

Experience shows that with competent defense even a small detachment can hold back greatly superior forces.

With all this, the BD in Ukraine is a local conflict. Nobody knows what tactics will rule in a global conflict. Or take "desert storm". What, NATO tactics didn't work? Knocking out air defense at the first stage and conquering the air have not gone anywhere. And if the Russian Air Force cannot cope with Ukrainian air defense due to a weak detection system, then Israel and NATO do not have such problems. Well, and then there will be air strikes with thousands of missiles. And no drones will play a special role. Oh, and they forgot to analyze the accuracy and quality of Western MLRS such as KHIMARS compared to ours.

In a global or simply serious conflict with NATO, all major production facilities will be under threat. Disable the aircraft factories and there will be no place to renew either helicopters or Sukhois. The same with missile and ship production.

Will they be able to produce them in millions per year in a global conflict?
A global conflict, aka a nuclear war, will end in a week at most. Even isolated skirmishes between, say, submarines, will be extremely rare.
Let me explain. No one has an anti-missile umbrella. Consequently, after an exchange of blows, even two, "Strike - retaliatory - second, with surviving means - retaliatory, also surviving", there will be very few combat-ready troops left. They, these troops, will not go as a landing force on enemy territory, they will help those who survived the exchange of blows. At home. If only because the top leadership, almost certainly, will not be alive. And there will be no one to give the order to land, say, on Washington. And what will they capture there, radioactive dust?
There will definitely be no production. None. There will be no energy, no components. And even if they are found, no one will think about production - the main task of any person will be their own survival.

You can leave the basement after 5 days, the level of radiation from precipitation and dust will decrease by 10 to 000 times.
In Hiroshima, the intelligence officers, diplomats and journalists who arrived on the 4th or 5th day and walked around the explosion site did not even get radiation sickness. depends on the type and modification of the charge used.

If a cobalt bomb (which fortunately only exists hypothetically) is detonated, there will be nothing to do on the surface for the next 100 years.

If a "classic" atomic charge is detonated, where uranium or plutonium is used, then everything depends on the efficiency of the bomb. The more radioactive substance is used to maintain the nuclear reaction, the higher the efficiency of the bomb. The higher the efficiency, the less radioactive contamination and when a powerful hydrogen bomb explodes, it is already possible to capture it in a few hours

If, for example, 6 reactors of the Zaporizhzhya NPP are destroyed by a conventional explosion, will there be life in Europe at all? I remind you that in Chernobyl there was a thermal explosion of one reactor, the consequences of which a powerful country in peacetime was unable to completely eliminate, being at the peak of its capabilities, and in the case of a global mess, who will eliminate the consequences of such destruction? Look at the map of the French NPPs, what will happen there if at least half of them are physically destroyed? And what if the same picture is all over the world? The radiation consequences of the nuclear weapon itself are negligible compared to what will happen from the result of the use of nuclear weapons. But there are hydroelectric dams, chemical production, nuclear waste storage facilities that require very careful supervision and much more that will sign the death sentence of human civilization on planet Earth.

The state apparatus works, the roads work, the energy sector has not been completely destroyed, all sorts of small Britons and sub-Europeans go to Kyiv. That is, the key issues in a large-scale war have not been resolved. This is precisely a limited local conflict with limited goals and limited resources.

There was no possibility of ending such a conflict using the potential of the Russian Armed Forces in 8 months, even under favorable circumstances. Or rather, the probability of success was so low that it was not even worth considering. This conflict was predicted to be long and bloody with serious consequences even before it started. If the leadership understood this, they would not even start their own. This understanding will come gradually, first to the leadership, then to the rest. It is interesting that the military actions in Ukraine have sunk to the level of WWI, not even to the level of WWII in the author's opinion. And that the main ones on the battlefield are UAV operators and platoons, squads in the infantry. And why not go up a notch, to the massive use of artillery and MLRS on the battlefield. One hundred to two hundred Smerch and two hundred to three hundred Grad and forward through the desert, for a hundred kilometers. How many artillery barrels and "Katyusha" were there per kilometer of the front in WWII by the second half of the war? Why not destroy the ancestral nests of Banderovites completely, like Lvov. Well, yes, dozens of trains with shells and missiles, half of which will be killed by drones along the way, and after that, half of the artillery concentrated on a small section of the front, half of which will also be "thinned out" and even if, in spite of everything, it delivers this most massive blow, in order to clear such an area, it is necessary to send thousands of soldiers into the attack, who will also be half destroyed in the places of concentration, before reaching the attack line. And it will be necessary to storm not even an open field, but damaged strongholds, which, from the entire mass of fired shells, will be hit by at most 2-3 percent. Our army may be enough for one attack, but then it will be necessary to mobilize 3-5 million (at least) in order to reach at least Kuev in this way, but again there will be no one to take it.
Remind me how the best Sumerian brigades stormed Pyatikhatki? They barely broke through the first line in two weeks, and only in places. And it was hell there, they had no shortage of anything.
Do you really think that by gathering a bunch of artillery and several divisions on a couple of kilometers of the front, you can break through it? No, you can only lose several thousand soldiers and hundreds of units of equipment. Didn't the lessons of the assaults on Pavlovka and Ugledar teach us anything? It's not that simple. A revolutionary situation must develop. It is not yet visible. It is also necessary to take into account that the "forge of revolutions" is St. Petersburg and Moscow. Remind me where the highest salaries are in the country? And a revolution in Uryupinsk alone will not solve much. My opinion.

I took an inflation calculator here, calculated with its help that my Moscow salary has not changed since 2012, and the amount of work has increased by one and a half to two times, or even more. If in the regions you can earn money for housing in the SVO, then in Moscow only if you start burning Abrams and F16s in packs in the SVO. Or if you have settled in well in Moscow. And I think there are about 20 percent of such people, the rest do not live very richly in Moscow, except that the asphalt is changed more often and the clinics are nicer.

I didn't live in Moscow, but I can't get the TV program out of my mind. It was about a police officer whose wife left him and he was left with either 3 or 4 children. And his salary was announced. It was three times higher than the salary of a policeman in our area. Our driver-forwarder of a bread truck (2 on/2 off mode) earns 17 thousand now. A nurse gets 17 thousand. Not long ago there was a fuss about salaries in the Krasnodar Territory, in Gulkevichi, about the salaries of ambulance drivers. After the fuss they started getting paid about 25. A masterpiece, isn't it? Are there such salaries in Moscow? Salaries in Russia are very different from what is written in the newspapers.

Oh, I know where in Moscow you can get such salaries! At the natural science departments of Lomonosov Moscow State University! lol Seriously, five years ago the lab technician's salary was a little less than 10 thousand. In my Academy of Sciences it's a little better, the junior research assistant's salary is something like 26 thousand, the rest - you earn yourself. In the nearest Moscow region, my mother worked as a postman for several years in retirement for the minimum wage plus a thousand rubles. Many sellers work for the minimum wage plus some share of the sales and get pennies. A large number of people over forty are thrown out of work and they can't find another one anywhere - they don't take it! Of course, it's not easy to find a mocking 17 thousand, but I wouldn't say that the population has become richer.
Plus, you should take into account that in Petrograd, people lived much better than in some village in the Oryol province. In Petrograd, they paid wages at work, but in the village, probably no one ever saw money.

I will dare to remind you about the Battle of Britain, when the Germans, acting correctly on the whole, knocked out airfields, radars, aircraft factories and by the end of August achieved almost complete air superiority over England. And then "in response to the bombing of Berlin" they also decided to start bombing London. The result is well known - the British Air Force was able to come out of its comatose state and no longer had to take off under bombs, they drove all the anti-aircraft guns to London and waited for the Germans on the approach and were able to turn the score in their favor. Yes, 1500 civilians died under German bombs. But the Air Force was restored and Germany suffered essentially its first defeat in that war.
And now you propose to repeat the same mistakes? Instead of warehouses, workshops and barracks, to pound the rear of Lvov?

I think we shouldn't put all our eggs in one basket, war is an eternal "rock, paper, scissors". It is enough to find an effective means of counteracting drones, as the rules of war will have to be rewritten. The law of evolution is that the fittest survive, so we need to not demolish everything to the ground, and try to create something new, we need to be able to adapt existing weapons to modern realities, and not bury entire specializations and weapons systems, because sooner or later we will return to them again.....

turembo, you are absolutely right. With one small, but perhaps significant amendment - an effective means of counteracting drones has long been found and is being actively implemented in all leading armies of the world. As a means of detection - sighting electronic-optical systems, exactly the same mechanical "eyes" as a drone (only with a greater detection range), and as a means of destruction - rapid-fire large-caliber machine guns and small-caliber artillery with ammunition for remotely programmable detonation. All this exists and has been for quite a long time, such developments are also in the Russian Federation. Why is it not used en masse? That is the question.

the answer is simple - during the entire time of the SVO, we have learned to make only lancets, geraniums and umpk on a mass scale, which, you must admit, are simpler than an automatic turret. No new transport, no new infantry fighting vehicle or tank - the equipment that fights is from the USSR, from Soviet factories. And no one at the top is itching request

What, what... The SVO clearly showed, one might say roughly, shoved it in everyone's face - with drones! Well, and Iskanders as a "long arm". This is on land, at least. Everything else is slowly but surely crawling into the dustbin of military-technical history.
Unfortunately (or fortunately), offensive operations according to the scheme of previous wars have become impossible. High-precision weapons (with the support of satellite and aerial reconnaissance) literally mow down all equipment at the very beginning of the offensive. And small infantry groups, in our case, are a long way from taking, for example, Kherson. That's the kind of crap it is.
And one more thing. They say that if in the first year of the SVO 90% of losses were from artillery strikes, now the same percentage is from VPL drone strikes. Therefore, unfortunately, the enemy will have something to fight with for a long time :(

Look at the Kursk region in August of that year - the enemy, with small forces, without technological, numerical, artillery, air or any other superiority, occupied territories in a week equivalent to our almost year-long offensive before that. And all this on armored vehicles, it was a combined arms operation... Now imagine for a second what would have happened if he had air superiority in this area and had the ability to hit targets 50-100 km from the LBS... Drones are a useful thing, in this particular case playing a big role, but they are not a "silver bullet". For some reason, the Jews don't have big problems with drones, for example...

And, taking this opportunity, I will express my suspicion that our ground offensive in 2022 was provoked by the British intelligence services: they fed us disinformation "from numerous reliable sources" that Ukraine would attack Donbass as soon as we withdrew our troops (after those exercises on the border) to their permanent deployment sites. That's when Putin, scratching his head, decided on preventive action, which is what the cunning Brits wanted.

Faith is generally one of the most powerful things in our world... if you want to believe, believe... I'll say this - regarding Kursk, it's not clear at all what benefit we get from the Ukrainian invasion? Or what could they even be?
Regarding the beginning of the SVO - in my opinion, it was an attempt to intimidate Western countries. Remember the ultimatum about the organization's almost self-dissolution? Our leadership liked the idea of a lightning operation in 2014 too much, when the whole world practically turned a blind eye to Crimea. Sanctions were imposed, if you suddenly don't remember, for supporting Donbass, when Russian citizens who had never even lived there before came and announced the creation of new republics, when miners began to "find deposits" of weapons exclusively of Russian manufacture in the mines, when paratroopers "lost during exercises" began to be encountered, and so on and so forth... the world is arranged this way - as long as you are successful in the media, and in general "handsome, rich, young and strong", no one will want to get involved, unless it concerns them personally. So our leadership listened to the reports of one person from Ukrainian politics who was well known to them...

Regarding Kursk, it is generally unclear what benefit we gain from the Ukrainian invasion?

Our benefit, or rather the benefit of the authorities: a sharp rise in patriotic spirit, an increase in the flow of contract soldiers to military registration and enlistment offices (and that's what happened!), giving the war more of a national character. It is known that there is not enough "national character". It is clear why - some are fighting, others are partying. And then it all started - "we need to unite even more, because the enemy is trampling our land", etc.
Benefit for Kyiv: they showed that they can attack, but they lack weapons to attack further than 10-20 km in depth and along the front. That is, there is a good reason to wheedle more weapons.
Therefore, it was planned like this: the Ukrainian Armed Forces would go 10 km, sit there for a month and then retreat. But the Ukrainian Armed Forces "got into fighting spirit" and "we were deceived again." That's the assumption. I don't believe that military intelligence "missed" the Ukrainian Armed Forces' preparations for the invasion.
You wrote everything correctly about the beginning of the SVO, all of this also took place. Plus the complete failure of our foreign intelligence! Well, this is complete chutzpah, forgive me. The enemy with five fresh brigades and a couple more in reserve, attacking literally a couple of hundred conscripts and border guards (why we had so many people there is another question) was able to penetrate 20 kilometers deep at most, although they themselves were counting on going at least 50 kilometers to the nuclear power plant. If this showed anything, it was that with at least slightly comparable forces (and not like in October 22, when Ukrainians there were almost several times more), there is no talk of any breakthroughs of "hundreds of kilometers", reserves are pulled up from adjacent areas too quickly and stop the breakthrough, actually a classic problem of the First World War, when the problem was not to break through those same trench lines, but to develop an offensive behind them. Conclusion - without absolute dominance in the air, as in the same Iraqi wars, there is no point in dreaming about any breakthroughs.

You are echoing a separate part of the official propaganda regarding the plans of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and our forces.

Well, this is just sucking up to the enemy, forgive me. Yes, of course, it was purely by chance that the Ukrainian Armed Forces decided to go on the offensive exactly where the Kursk NPP is closest to the border and purely by chance they were driving in columns to Lgov and partly Bolshoy Soldatskoye in the first days. I will not argue about the main goal, the exchange of land for negotiations takes place, but at least there was a secondary NPP.
what "famous unit" allegedly stood in front of the conscripts and once again "missed" the enemy

If we are talking about Akhmat's special forces, then he was not there (practically). The talking head of course was talking about "we are there, everything is fine", as in October 22 they were talking about reserves and special forces near Balakleya, but in fact there was almost a detachment from the force, which naturally could not do anything even if it wanted to.
and then the Ukrainian Armed Forces didn’t even twitch, because they didn’t have the means to disorganize and defeat the enemy’s forces... in other words, if it hadn’t been the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but a more serious enemy, things would have been completely screwed...

And then the Ukrainian Armed Forces did not twitch, because even with a 3-4-fold superiority over the enemy in everything except aviation, after 20 km of the offensive they suffered such losses that there was no one left to go forward, all forces went to fortification, and the enemy had already created serious barriers, and all this despite the fact that we only have Aerial superiority according to NATO classification. What I actually said, here is the very picture of modern warfare. If you want to go 100-200 kilometers - bring 12-16 times more manpower than the enemy, and even without air you will lose a brigade a week with such actions.

The situation at the front will be dramatically changed by a dense space constellation of satellites and AWACS UAVs, providing data processing in real time without delays. A very expensive pleasure, but there is no way around it, otherwise there will be unjustified losses.

    10. ATGM. This can finally be added to the list of completely useless weapons. Any armored vehicles are much safer for crews to destroy with FPV drones from safe distances.

The ATGM will evolve and will receive a cheap but effective homing guidance head (press and forget), it will become much lighter. After which it will become an indispensable weapon of the infantry. The primitive designs of more than 50 years ago will disappear.

    9. Automatic mounted grenade launcher. A weapon that has proven itself excellently in mobile mechanized groups, but in defense (and it was intended as a defensive weapon) the AGS is useless precisely because it is easily detected by drones and just as easily destroyed.

It is too early to write it off, it will remain and will be effectively used from well-equipped shelters and, of course, if it evolves.

    4. Hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher. As an anti-tank weapon it is practically useless, except, perhaps, in urban areas.

Once it gets a cheap and effective aiming head, press and forget, it will become the infantry's favorite weapon. This weapon will exist forever, in its class.

    3. Sniper rifle. Yes, it is a useful weapon, but using it has become much more difficult thanks to drones. A sniper pair, no matter how well they camouflage themselves, can become a target for a drone.

It will not go anywhere and will remain in the troops, having gone through stages of evolution: 1. The firing range will increase significantly.
    2. It will become as silent as possible.
    3. And so on, whoever and whatever they wish.

    2. Machine gun. Both the light machine gun, which is a good substitute for a sniper rifle, since it has a greater, more reliable firing range than a machine gun, and its heavy counterpart are very useful both in defense and in attack.

Where would we be without it? It will remain without options, naturally continuously evolving.

    11. Mortar. If we talk about the 82-mm "Podnos", then its range of 3 to 4 km raises doubts about the advisability of its use, since at such a distance the mortar is very easily detected from the air and destroyed.

Just like the AGS, it won’t go anywhere, the tactics of use and design will change.

That is, support will not be provided by tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, mortars and snipers, but by operators several kilometers in the rear.

It is unlikely that UAV operators will feel safe in just a few years.

But alas, the kamikaze drone is capable of destroying all targets at which the tank’s barrel is aimed, and the tank as well.

It may, but it won’t provide 4-8 shells per minute.

Nowadays, on the ruins of the practice of ramming attacks with large masses of equipment and other attributes of the past, under the attacks of drones, the practice of actions in dispersed and maximally mobile groups or small units is being born.

Ramming attacks and the use of large military units will not go away, given the necessary space grouping of satellites and AWACS UAVs. They will instantly dismantle any grouping of troops, if they know how to work in a coordinated manner.

This is not a modern war, this is a war with the natives or any other obviously weaker enemy.
Modern warfare between equal sides does not imply the complete knockout of air defense, artillery and drones in any way.

The most recent conflict in Ukraine is taking place in full accordance with the canons of the First World War.
What is modern? The one that is going on right now or something else?
Perhaps it is the most intense, with the use of almost all types of weapons that are available in the armies of serious countries?
The second aspect, what is the first world... and what is wrong with it? Precisely because the conflict is of high intensity, the opposing sides are not weak, the confrontation was head-on... everything is real, everything is tough.
The media can tell different stories, but on the front lines, in battle, there is no cinematic quality, no gameplay, blood/death, victory or defeat.
And now the question... could it have been different? Could it have been like in the movies/in the books/in the fantasies???
With all the talk about wars of the future, HOW is this? WHERE is this? Is anyone even preparing for them and how?

Well, Roman is on his way, his article series, then tanks are not needed, then artillery, then planes and helicopters are not needed and here is the result. Yes, there is no ideal weapon, only a complex of using different types of weapons will give a positive result. As for the analogies with WWI, it is clear that both then and now the parties have practically identical weapons. Time will pass, there will be effective means and methods of counteraction to the same UAVs, some tactical methods, new ideas. And the commentators are doomsayers.. Well, go ahead, to LBS.. Apply your armchair ideas there, show how it should be done.

The article is good, but there is one but. A similar situation was with the advent of missile weapons in the 60s of the 20th century. Great euphoria and attempts to replace / remove many types of troops (barrel artillery, attack aircraft, etc.). It is good that N.S. Khrushchev was "sent" into retirement. Isn't this happening now? The reason is probably that there are no effective and cheap means of counteraction. Swords are often ahead of the shield.

An interesting thought about combating UAVs came up yesterday.

Is it possible to use the effect of ODAB - volumetric aviation detonating munitions to destroy UAVs?

Such ammunition, when used at an altitude of 100 - 500 meters, should disable everything flying within a certain radius, depending on its power.

Let us recall that the operating principle of the ODAB is based on the implementation of a volumetric explosion.

The destruction of the thin-walled casing of the ammunition leads to the transition of the liquid explosive into a gaseous state, ensuring the creation of an aerosol cloud, which is then detonated.

The radius of destruction will depend on the power of the ammunition, and will be several hundred meters, which is quite enough to destroy UAVs. This will deprive the enemy of the opportunity to use them against our assault units.

Of course, our UAVs will not fly for a certain period of time either, but they will remain intact.

    Why not?

    Regarding UAVs:

If we don't have the ability to have many satellites, we don't need to. It's enough to make the enemy's satellites in orbit helpless. And then we'll have more chances with our primitive communications. Back in the days of Reagan's star wars, the frightened Marked One turned to the USSR Academy of Sciences with the question of what to do?

So one of the academics calmed him down and suggested dispersing any dark substance in orbit. It would be cheap, and no one would accuse us of violating international laws, we would write it all off as an accident, the academic said.

But time will pass and they will become just a buzzing toy, safe if the protection works.
But what kind of protection this will be - there is already a huge field of activity, from lasers to turrets with net throwers.

The article is correct at the moment. Because the SVO has been going on for four years and there is no end in sight. And because the author and we do not trust our commanders and politicians. The Soviet Army taught us that the enemy will be defeated in the shortest possible time, because our generals are the most talented. And now, apart from frontal assaults and self-sacrifice of soldiers, our generals cannot offer us anything. And so the whining begins: the weapons are wrong, and there is superiority in UAVs, and the tanks are of the wrong design, and the artillery is not of the right range, and we cannot use aircraft because the enemy has air defense, etc. And for some reason the enemy sees our troops and movements, but we do not. Kursk, now Belgorod will not let you lie. Having multiple superiority in everything, our generals cannot break through the front in any area! The Armed Forces of Ukraine calmly transfer units from one end of the front to the other. For example, it is known that the Armed Forces of Ukraine transferred units from near Kursk to Pokrovsk and Chasov Yar. How is that possible? This means they are confident that Russia will not cross the border near Kursk and secondly, logistics are not disrupted!
We need to change the "Kremlin Towers", then the grenades will be "of that system". Otherwise we will continue to discuss for a long time what "is stopping the dancer".

Battle of the Marne took place from September 5 to 9, 1914. The French managed to stop the advance of the German army, which raised the morale of the French and British. The front line shifted to the north and stabilized there. 3

Battle of the Somme — a series of military actions from July 1 to November 18, 1916 between Anglo-French and German troops on the Western Front. It took place on the Somme River in the area of the cities of Albert (Somme department, France) and Bapaume (Pas-de-Calais department, France).

...In principle, one can agree with many of the author's conclusions and arguments...
Scientific and technological progress, in accordance with the Laws of Philosophy, introduces new and sometimes paradoxical changes into Military Affairs...
However, there is one BIG and SERIOUS "BUT!"..
The thing is that the SVO is (with all the scale and horrors of the BD...) not a "full-fledged" (if one can put it that way) War...
Still, the SVO assumes, and during its implementation, certain restrictions take place...
Which largely determine the dominance of UAVs on the battlefield...
Limitations, at least in terms of the size of the troop masses (personnel, equipment, various technical means) and some particularly powerful means of destruction... This refers, for example, to tactical nuclear weapons...

Of course, it is possible to disperse a group of fifty fighters, but if there is no real opposition, the same mass of anti-UAVs, for example...

By the way, in WWII there were also "drones", if I may say so..., namely - front-line aviation - fighters, dive bombers ("Stuka", "Petlyakov"), attack aircraft (the famous "Ils"; "Fokers"), over the positions of our troops almost the entire war - the German "frame" constantly hung... A very malicious means of aerial reconnaissance of the Wehrmacht... (It was this that largely ensured the tactical and operational superiority of the Wehrmacht over the Red Army for a long time..., giving its commanders the opportunity to promptly and adequately respond and parry the actions of our troops... to reveal the plans of our command...)

A brief retelling of the memories of one front-line soldier (In fact: a typical battle of the most difficult for the Red Army in 1941 and 1942)...
The enemy is advancing... Our men are digging trenches..., setting up dugouts, firing points, observation posts and command posts... There is a "frame" hanging in the air...
    The enemies are approaching...

First: an air raid (based on the results of aerial reconnaissance) of "stukas"... The very first dive bomber - with the very first bomb - hits the dugout (or command post) with the battalion commander...
This dugout is blown up... Then a strike on the artillery positions...
(Some German pilots, during the Great Patriotic War, managed to place "piglets" right under the wheels of our particular "forty-five"...)
Then they "go over" the trenches with bombs...
As a farewell - machine gun fire from the Stukas and Messerschmitts... (Perhaps - more powerful than the drone attack!))))))))

Then a tank attack (and the tanks don't even leave the road to deploy into battle formation..., immediately hitting the remaining more or less important targets - with fire from cannons and machine guns...)... The enemy infantry - almost without losses - breaks into the BP location of our completely disorganized and demoralized infantrymen...

The enemy's success was due, first of all, to the competent and massive use of the "drones" of that time - frontline aviation...

But as soon as they learned to more or less resist the dominance of the Fritzes, and later eliminated this dominance... - things began to get much worse for the Fritzes!..

So - there is no point in exaggerating the importance of drones... It's just that there is no anti-drone weaponry yet (it is not widely used)...

Another point - from the zone of active military operations - the rear is currently turned off, including the deep rear...
(Yes, both sides periodically strike at some targets, but there is no need to talk about total destruction (like the results of carpet bombing and the use of weapons of mass destruction) (THANKFULLY!)...)
Meanwhile, powerful, completely disarming... strikes on strategically important rear facilities... have always been one of the most important elements of WWII and, even more so, of modern serious military conflicts...

Furthermore, we must not forget about SPACE... Right now a struggle for dominance in Space is unfolding (still latently)...
(It's like air supremacy during WWII, and in modern conflicts...)
Whoever wins this struggle will dictate and impose their will on the battlefield... It makes no difference - both on the LBS... and in the deep rear... In principle - the need to use weapons of mass destruction may even disappear...
Some kind of "laser beams" (relatively speaking) used from a huge mass of satellites - they will simply burn out all the equipment, and even - it will be possible to burn not only equipment, but also a specific soldier...
The development of satellite and anti-satellite weapons is in full swing...
Also a big surprise for the population of the opposing sides - could be the use of some seismic or weather weapons, and - in a specific area of the Front or the enemy Rear...
But this is already somewhat beyond the "topic"...

Not all provisions of this article can be accepted unconditionally. But it is very important that someone tries to comprehend the changes taking place and draw the right conclusions for the future in advance. As for drones, in a serious conflict with the use of tactical nuclear weapons, they will immediately fail due to an electromagnetic pulse and radiation. The electronics in them are too weak - in fact, household. Installing protection will increase the weight and negate most of their advantages. But you can drive a tank through contaminated terrain without any problems. You should not act rashly - you need to find a balance between different types of weapons in modern conditions. Good or bad, but the SVO has created conditions for this.

Sorry, but you wrote complete nonsense about nuclear weapons, yes, what is not covered by a conditional meter-thick layer of concrete will fail, but only in the affected area, so there is no point in talking about the failure of all electronics later. You can leave the basement after 5 days, the level of radiation from precipitation and dust will decrease by a factor of 10 to 000.

The higher the efficiency, the less radioactive contamination, and when a powerful hydrogen bomb explodes, it is possible to march without protective equipment in just a few hours

From communication with SVO participants, viewing hundreds of videos from SVO.
Artillery. was, is and will be the "god" of war. Most of those killed by drones - first processed the group with artillery, mortars. After that, almost all are deafened and shell-shocked - you can't hear the drones, it is impossible to walk with your head up all the time and the infantry becomes easy prey for drones.
Tanks and other armored vehicles. Their effectiveness in breaking through the defense line is measured simply. The number and ability of the military-industrial complex to compensate for losses. If only we had a military-industrial complex like in 1943. So that after the Kursk Bulge and the losses of 6 thousand armored vehicles in 50 days, we could have new ready tank armies that would go on the offensive towards the Dnieper. Is that possible now? The main threat to hundreds, thousands of tanks in the direction of the main attack is mines. And here everything again depends on the military-industrial complex. The ability to quickly replenish INEVITABLE losses and repair damaged equipment. There was a multi-hour documentary newsreel about the Berlin operation on YouTube. Such a huge number of our tanks were destroyed, in minefields, not even close to anything like this was in the North Military District. In fact, minefields were easily overcome. The leader is knocked out, the one following him goes around him and again "demines" himself. Whoever survives goes into the breakthrough.
A much bigger problem for the attackers is the satellite groups that monitor the movement of troops in the enemy's rear in any weather. This will allow the creation of a "Surovikin line" against any attack being prepared. Of course, if the General Staff is adequate, and not like in the Kursk region. When for months and weeks they wrote about the growth of the group in Sumy, about the attack being prepared. But no one from the General Staff moved to prepare a defense, or even just to check. Are there fortifications or not? Do conscripts have modern communications, will they not be cut off in the first hours of the attack?
The next big war is an AI war, a war of systems, in which guns, tanks, planes, drones are just cogs. Everything will be decided by industrial potential and the development of AI, which will monitor the situation on the front line online with the help of thousands of eyes from satellites, ending with a camera from a soldier's helmet.

...HOW CAN "EVENTS" UNFOLD IN THE CASE OF A REAL WAR BE DECLARED?.

...Oh, the "fantasy" has played out (obviously from a hangover)))))))) and I will brazenly risk answering the question posed by the author (the respected author, without irony) of the material:
"What will we fight with tomorrow?"
...And to brazenly offer to the wide respectable public... - his deeply unprofessional assumption and idea of a couch strategist about:
...WHAT (OR MORE PRECISELY HOW!) WILL WE FIGHT TOMORROW!..

So! WAR IS DECLARED! (Both sides, each other... Or our rulers - finally - will be worthy!)

    1. A powerful, demoralizing, disarming missile and bomb attack is carried out on all the most important strategic rear facilities of the enemy, such as:
the largest (and not so large) enterprises of the military-industrial complex..., administrative centers (ALL decision-making centers, including civilian ones!), simply large enterprises and factories that have at least some defense significance...

    2. All enemy airfields, air defense position areas, and simply missile forces are mercilessly burned out (including with the use of tactical nuclear charges).
Places of possible concentration of enemy reserves - it doesn't matter where they are "hiding" - in residential areas or in fields and forests...

    3. All important communication nodes, energy facilities are put out of action...

    4. All railway junctions and bridges are destroyed...
(The presence of tunnels under the Dnieper is unlikely to improve the situation!)
The most important road junctions are being put out of order...

    5. Troops are quickly pulled up to the site of the main attack(s) from various rear areas - along railways and highways...
Of course, the enemy "will be watching everything" (thanks to the allies' satellite groups) and will counteract (or try to counteract, more precisely) with missile and air strikes, using the surviving equipment...
But let's hope for the effectiveness of our air defense, civil and military...
And, frankly speaking, after the effective use of anti-bunker weapons (including hypersonic weapons, in combination with tactical nuclear charges) - how many "observers" will remain in the Ukrainian headquarters?... And will they be able to give orders to the troops in a timely manner (intrinsically))))))))???..

    6. By the time the main strike groups are concentrated, additional missile and bomb strikes are carried out to paralyze the enemy's defensive capabilities (including the active use of TOS systems) in the directions of the main strikes, not only at the tactical and operational depth of defense..., but also at the strategic depth...
Sabotage operations by special forces are intensifying... Electronic warfare systems are actively operating...
I repeat - the surviving top representatives of the "father-commanders" will observe all this (possibly, of course)... And what?..
They will not be able to provide any real resistance to our strike groups...
This will be - an observation of the doomed...

And what about the UAV troops... Nothing... They'll "struggle" a bit - and then they'll be finished... More precisely, they'll be finished off quickly...
Positional areas (locations of possible concentration of UAV operators) - will be identified (quickly identified) and mercilessly destroyed (burned out) by all available means...
Spare parts, new drones, necessary technical equipment, and, most importantly, new operators will not come from the rear...
There will be no more rear areas... (And "everything for the front, everything for victory - will not happen)
And there will be no communications left to “deliver” the newly-minted miracle weapon...

But what about the minefields... It is unlikely that they will even slightly "for a long time" stop or seriously weaken the powerful pressure of our strike groups...
There are modern means of demining, the concentration of which in the areas of breakthrough will bring (undoubtedly) a positive result...
Even conventional concentrated artillery fire is capable of providing an acceptable opportunity for the advance of advancing troops...

    6. Motorized columns will rush through the mixed with earth (as was described in the previous comment) and burnt out positions of Ukrainian soldiers (Remember DECEMBER 2022!) our valiant Armed Forces... Under the powerful cover of air defense and UAVs...
Any resistance will be mercilessly suppressed, no one will specially "target" to distinguish civilians from the AFU... No one... In response to any shot - powerful fire damage from all types of weapons..., at any object from which this shot is fired... Fortunately, the presence of UAV reconnaissance aircraft and other modern technical means of detection will allow this object to be identified - instantly... Identify and destroy...

    7. THE ATTACKING... SKILLFULLY ORGANIZED MASS OF TROOPS..., concentrated in specific directions... (PLUS THE COMPLETELY DISORGANIZED AND DESTROYED ENEMY REAR...) IS A HUGE AND TERRIBLE FORCE...
The experience of the Victorious Year 1945 and the experience of the Americans (Operation Desert Storm) are indisputable confirmation of this...

At one time, bombers appeared - the answer was anti-aircraft artillery. Strengthening the armor of tanks led to modification of shells and an increase in the caliber of anti-tank weapons. At sea, anti-torpedoes appeared against torpedoes. And so it is in everything. Now work is underway to suppress UAVs. At the tactical level, multi-barrel drone-killers will probably appear /already exist/, sending hundreds of pellets a short distance towards a drone. I think each squad will have a fighter with such a weapon. Two to four barrels, quick reload, aimed firing range of 200-300 meters. This is on the ground. In the air, most likely, there will be loitering drone-fighters armed with 5,45 / 5,56 mm machine guns, which will patrol designated squares and destroy everything flying from the enemy. In operational and tactical terms, light versions of Shiloh / Pantsir will probably appear. Radar, 12,7mm multi-barrel caliber and light missiles with a range of up to 3-5 km. On wheels, with good maneuverability. When such a comprehensive anti-drone system is created, the severity of this problem will decrease several times.
Of course, electronic warfare will remain relevant. And also camouflage and smoke. I don't think we'll have to wait long for new systems.

in your view the possibilities of a nuclear explosion are exaggerated, military electronics in most cases will require a reboot or will continue to function properly
In general, even the most alarmist authors agree that equipment and cars that are not connected to the grid will practically not be put out of order - the power output is too small, and even connected equipment (long power transmission line conductors will collect much more energy) will at least partially survive the EMP/remain repairable.

For example, testing of 37 passenger cars produced between 1986 and 2002 yielded zero results with the engine off. With the engine running, three cars stalled, after which they started normally. When testing 3 trucks produced between 18 and 1991, three stalled, one of which had to be towed to a workshop. Testing of networked traffic lights yielded much worse results - most of the traffic lights required manual restart.

    1. No, of course it's nice that at least someone read R. Pukhov's article on BMPD "The online publication "Business Insider" published an article by Michael Peck "The century-long reign of the machine gun is over, a Russian strategist argues" outlining a number of theses from an article previously published by "Rossiyskaya Gazeta" by the director of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST), member of the Public Council under the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation Ruslan Pukhov "This is already a different war." The drone revolution is radically changing the face of combat operations and the army. However, for some reason the author of "Business Insider" focused on the strange opposition of drones to machine guns, although the latter were not mentioned at all in Ruslan Pukhov's article." https://bmpd.livejournal.com/4903023.html#cutid1

    2. And that Pukhov's article has been rewritten "in the genre of school presentation - "write what you read in your own words"" that's good too.

    3. However, it is wrong to draw global conclusions from a particular conflict.
In particular, the "drone revolution" (when racing drones turned into weapons, and filming drones into reconnaissance equipment) became possible only in a situation where the parties to the conflict did not have APS (and EW at the initial stage) and C-RAM.
Moreover, it is striking that SEAD operations turned out to be “unbearable” in terms of losses.

    4. The results of the conflict in the Middle East, where air defense/missile defense, air force and artillery showed what they are capable of when used correctly, are also completely ignored.
By the way, a "shooter" with modern sights becomes an effective means against drones - but the author also ignores this.

All these flying grenades with TV guidance are dangerous until effective detection and destruction means are created (implemented). The slow reaction in the Russian Federation is surprising, because the characteristics of such means are obvious and they need to be developed and implemented en masse.

The Americans once made a flying BRDM, like modern drones, but with two propellers. The crew was three people, one of them a machine gunner, another a driver, and the third an observer. It even began to enter the troops, but then, for a number of reasons, they abandoned it.
Maybe something like this could be made for flights literally close to the ground. The advantages are huge speed, cross-country ability and maneuverability, and good visibility compared to motorcycles and buggies. You can make light armor with large armor slope angles, install an autopilot coupled with course and side radars, and a processor that allows you to maintain altitude (two meters is enough), go around and jump over obstacles to make the driver's job as easy as possible. No drone can keep up with such a "thing", an algorithm can be introduced into the processor to control the unpredictable change of course - to make aiming with small arms more difficult. Various vehicles can be made on the basis of a flying platform - BRDM, ambulance, missile, anti-aircraft, assault, evacuation (for downed pilots), etc.

By relying on one type of weapon, you can win a couple of battles, but never a war. As soon as UAVs begin to dominate, there will immediately be a confrontation between electronic warfare, EMP, ODAB and something else new. They will select the right radiation to disable UAVs at a line of sight distance and swarms will pour in.

Well, in the structure of our losses, the maximum is artillery, mortars, etc. (which, by the way, are guided by drones). And losses from FPV are 10-15 percent. For example, non-combat losses (from various accidents) are greater than from FPV. Fewer drones - only small arms.

The progress of drones is visible to the naked eye, and it does not take a rocket scientist to know that they will continue to dominate the battlefield. Clouds of small drones controlled by artificial intelligence will not allow fighters to be on the surface of the earth. Only underground structures and communications give a chance to preserve the personnel of the armed forces. As is known, wars are waged for the possession of natural resources. Perhaps the war will become permanent, that is, continuous and long-term. Russia has a defensive doctrine, since it does not lack resources, but has strong states on its borders that lack natural resources. The defensive doctrine requires that the borders be strengthened in accordance with modern requirements, underground structures for personnel and equipment are needed, even along transport routes.

a light machine gun, which is a good substitute for a sniper rifle, since it has a greater, more reliable firing range than a machine gun, and its heavy counterpart is very useful both in defense and in attack.

This kind of war and not SVO is obtained because the army is meager in personnel, since 22 there has not been a single classic offensive with a predominance over the enemy, either by infantry or equipment, the maximum that I lead in the offensive is a dozen armored vehicles, and usually 2-3, of course they will be burned in concentration, and the offensives on Zhiguli and scooters will go down in the history of military art, of course, this whole SVO showed that the army is held only by the stubbornness and heroism of an ordinary infantryman Vanya, any military science requires the establishment of an air advantage on the battlefield, and we do not have it anywhere at all

So no one will allow this "predominance" to appear now. Any more or less large accumulation of equipment and infantry will be immediately tracked down and covered with "cassettes". We've already been burned by this, on both sides.

I may be STUPID (well, I am stupid) but what is the strength (yeah, what is the STRENGTH, brother) of FPV.. in their RC (remote control, which means the operator is less vulnerable) and the ability to accurately aim (which means an accurate strike on the target).. and armor (especially from the upper and rear engine and transmission) does not dance against cumulative warheads.. but Gaspada (and the few surviving comrades) all this is carried by a plastic and relatively slow (not even transonic) carrier.. it is no secret that even today shotguns (sometimes) destroy an approaching FPV.. the question is HOW to detect a radio-transparent and almost non-Me object.. and here it is a matter of improving detection systems; Radar or TV with a program for detecting moving targets.. and then the Navy's experience is needed in their close defense circle against anti-ship missiles, namely Gatlings_Vulcans (by the way, the caliber can be 5.45 or even smaller).. and then the BMPT, which did not play a role, can become a real means of covering attacking MBTs if.. instead of 30 mm and AGS, put 4_6 Gatlings + normal FLER... i.e. a system for detecting and identifying approaching FPVs.. after all, the speed on electric motors is not like that of Granit or Zircon...
    p.s....arguments pro and con..are welcome

Too radical conclusions are made. For example, in defense, an AGS firing from a forest belt is very difficult to detect from a UAV, this is directly stated in Markin's "Combat Experience Appeal" of 23-24. The general conclusion is about the effectiveness of AGS in defense.

UAV is another Pandora's box, the consequences of which have not yet been fully understood. For example, what prevents you from raising a FPWDron into the air 20-30 km from an airbase and burning a strategic bomber parked on it? Or, during the loading of ammunition into an aircraft carrier, driving a similar drone or a dozen into this same ammunition while also being tens of kilometers from the target? Today, this will not work? And tomorrow, one operator will be able to control both a dozen and a hundred. Remember how our general was killed by the NBC protection agency, here the principle is similar, a surveillance camera, a set of drones waiting for a command in a certain place, and it is not at all necessary to use UAVs in this way, there are hundreds of options. How to protect yourself from this is unknown, electronic warfare will not work, and the physical destruction of drones requires a completely different defense system, and how much this will cost is generally unknown, is it easy to protect a tank in an attack, but an airbase or a seaport? In general, an extremely interesting future awaits us, the further the scarier.

UAVs are our everything. Served in 2016-2019. The drone flew 2-3 times a year under the division's control. Why? They were afraid of losing it. There were cases.
An idea for the future - it is necessary to implement Artificial Intelligence in a UAV without direct control, so that it finds an enemy and decides everything itself. And whoever does this first will enter modern wars as a WINNER. And on the same day, tanks/airplanes/helicopters/ships will become a thing of the past.
Drones are not only flying, but also surface/underwater.
If anyone finds this funny, you can go to the front. A friend there says that a drone is hunting for everyone, that is, it has already reached the point where there is 1 drone per person, even electronic warfare does not help.

We live in interesting times. It is wildly interesting to observe these processes, but ONLY FROM A DISTANCE)

The author is fundamentally wrong. Tactics in the conditions of drone dominance should be based on the deployment of a large number of unmanned objects, which drones will be forced to try to hit and the destruction of these drones when they try to hit. That is, all the equipment and weapons listed by the author should become unmanned. It would also be a good idea to deploy a network of Wi-Fi routers on the front lines, on which the enemy will also be forced to spend shells. $10 per router versus €2000 per shell is a good ratio.
As for a soldier on the front line, his main weapon should be a radio with a video camera, and a Kalashnikov for self-defense. Perhaps an OVS cable.

It seems to me that the most important question here is not what to fight with, but with whom and where. Judging by how quickly Central Asian enclaves are being created in our cities, then the b\d will have to be waged on the streets of our cities, and the numerical superiority will definitely not be in our favor.

    Very good article
Russia is indeed waging war in such a way that it has created a situation that is completely analogous to the positional stalemate of the Imperialist War era. And that is why the outcome can only be the same - a crushing defeat - and that is precisely what ALL the participating parties suffered in the Imperialist War, and first of all, Tsarist Russia.
Although modern "patriots" try to keep quiet about the defeat of Tsarist Russia, Tsarist Russia lost as many personnel in the armed forces as all the other allies combined, and at the same time lost almost 780.000 square kilometers of territory with a population of more than 56 million people - it was at this point that Russia was taken over by the Bolsheviks.
This is precisely where Russia is heading - all the "liberated" territories and all the "rapid advances", "crushing blows" are so insignificant that they have no significance at all - and all precisely because the Russian leadership stubbornly plays a positional stalemate.
Let me remind you that it took the Red Army only 10 months not just to push back the fascists from Stalingrad to Kyiv, but also to destroy all the troops that defended these territories, except for the 17th Army, locked in Crimea, that is, about 1200 km. And all because the Soviet government acted with the aim of liberating the country and decisively defeating the invader.
What is the goal of the Russian government, I do not know. But I see the means and the results. And where they lead is also obvious.

What positional deadlock, what are you talking about? Has the front frozen motionless for months, like in World War I? It moves, little by little, but continuously. Of course, the experience of previous wars should be taken into account, but looking for a complete analogy in WWI, when the means of destruction have changed so much, and several new types of troops have appeared, is, in my opinion, a mistake. The brain simply always looks for the simplest explanations for what is happening, and the analogy with World War I seems to be the simplest and most logical, but not necessarily the correct explanation of what is happening. Facts, circumstances and technology have changed too much since then...

I believe it is too early to bury artillery, at least self-propelled artillery. There is a battle of wits going on now, new tactics are being developed, and ways to protect artillery from drones are being developed. Again, the question of artillery effectiveness in comparison with drones is not so easy to assess, because artillery shells, unlike drones, do not have cameras attached. Combat missions will change, a new niche will be found in the line of various weapons.
P.S.: What is interesting is that over the past year and a half, information about new domestic barrel artillery has practically disappeared from the Internet; the last messages on this site (for example, about the Koalitsiya or Malva self-propelled guns) are dated 2023. This may indicate either that they have been written off (which is seriously doubted), or that additional requirements for the performance characteristics and protection of artillery have been developed, and designers have been given specific tasks to modernize and bring barrel artillery into line with the new realities of war.
