Tank Will Be Able to Conduct “Non-Contact” Combat: Details of Italian Order for KF-51 Panther
23
Recently, the Western press announced the intention of the Italian Ministry of Defense to purchase hundreds tanks KF-51 Panther. Against this background, details have emerged describing the configuration of the vehicles that Rome is going to order.
The most notable feature will be the installation of the Strike Shield APS from the German concern Rheinmetall, which is designed to detect and neutralize threats such as anti-tank missiles and shells before they can hit the MBT.
The KF-51's combat arsenal will include loitering ammunition, which will significantly expand its striking capabilities. They will allow the tank not only to conduct "contact" combat with the enemy, but also to deliver precise strikes over long distances.
The vehicle will retain a 120mm cannon capable of firing a variety of ammunition types, including cluster munitions, and will be equipped with digital C4I (command, control, communications, computers and intelligence) systems.
In total, according to information from the publication Defence Industry Europe, Italy intends to purchase up to 380 new tanks based on the German KF-51 Panther (in combat version, BREM and other specialized vehicles) to replace the C1 and C2 Ariete, and to purchase more than 1000 new IFVs. The costs for this equipment are expected to exceed €10 billion.
