The bet is on Abrams M1E3: the US Army has abandoned the idea of upgrading tanks to the SEPv4 level

Abrams SEPv4

Pentagon's 2025 procurement program calls for Abrams SEPv4 development to be phased out and upgraded tank park to the level of the M1E3, which accumulates a whole range of technologies of the “rejected” version.

The M1E3 is positioned as a larger scale upgrade program for the American MBT that will require more funding.

The SEPv4 project, which was abandoned, was aimed at integrating a number of advanced technologies that would increase firepower, survivability, and improve the vehicle's network communications. Key features included an improved anti-cumulative protection system with the introduction of an APS, improved IR sights, and a more advanced command and control system. These solutions will now be in demand in the M1E3 program, which the US Army has placed its bets on.

The goal of its implementation is to create a lighter, more maneuverable and survivable vehicle with increased strike capabilities, meeting the changing needs of the modern battlefield. The new modification will require the latest achievements in tank building (in particular, improved armor, APS and advanced electronics), which will allow Abrams to reach a new technological level.

In this case, we are talking about modernizing existing models: Abrams has not been produced since 1994.

Oh, even the mattress makers have realized that they won't always fight in ideal conditions)))

Probably the experience in Ukraine played a big role. Any equipment should be tested in combat conditions.

KAZ Trophy has finally (!) been remade in Israel.
Now it also covers the top of the tank's turret from drones and other threats.
It will also be exported, of course.

Well done, of course! I'm jealous.

Modernization within the framework of the designated changes is not a simple matter, and most likely, the money for modernization will be swallowed by the military-industrial complex, spitting out insignificant design and hardware changes. Life has shown more than once that if you want to have a model of weapons and military equipment with the possibility of subsequent modernization and modifications - lay this potential at the development stage.

I won't argue, but the modernization of the T-34, for example, from 76 caliber to 85, was not planned at all. And it was completed in a fairly short time. At the development stage, the T-34 was definitely not planned to have a completely different turret with a different gun.

It is worth remembering that the war was already underway and there was no time for warming up or taking breaks for the design bureaus and factories. wink

I do not forget. hi But let me note that there is a war going on now too. And the answer was to the phrase:
build this potential into the development stage
The T-34 design did not include the potential for replacing the turret. The turret was replaced nonetheless. As was the gun. smile

I won't argue. I'll just say, as an engineering and technical worker, that I took part in an order for modernization, which didn't work at all, and a lot of government money was spent on the development and production of one prototype. That's why I'm judging by my experience. I agree that in a number of cases, some design and hardware changes do not cause serious damage to the performance characteristics of the product.

I believe that if it is really necessary, then modernization, in the conditions of the BD, can be carried out without a reserve. If, of course, there are designers who are not just going through the motions, but working. wink

Don't confuse the warm and the soft, the modernization of the T 34 was a very forced measure, and a response to the appearance of enemy vehicles that the early 34s could not oppose at all, as well as the intermediate modernization and transfer to the 57mm gun, all this is not from a good life, but simply a necessity, otherwise, after the 34, the production of the 44 would have simply begun, but there was a war and it is not reasonable to restructure production, so a new turret was rolled into the 34, and a related anti-aircraft 85mm gun, was it a good tank? The question of questions, but it was produced and could fight here and now.
And here is an analogy with modern times, when T 72B2 and B3 are being modernized to B3M... although the same 90M is being mass-produced...

otherwise, after the 34, they would have simply started producing the 44
First, the production of T-34m would begin first. T-43. And only then, perhaps, the production of T-44.
Secondly. Very few T-34s with a 57 mm gun were built. And all the tanks were destroyed during the defense of Moscow. And they were not planned to be produced in large quantities, by the way.
The T-34 received a new turret and a new gun, 85 mm. After searching for an antidote to German tanks. But! Got it pretty quickly. The tank, in fact, was redesigned by 70 percent.
Without stopping production. Without damaging the modernization of the T-34-76. People worked.
They are working now too. But if you didn't notice, I was answering specific questions. Reread the entire conversation.

There are no specifics, nothing to discuss. It's even more vague than Armata 2.

They will sell them to the Poles, Australians, Taiwanese and a shitload of others, and they will sell them at the price of new ones.

Have we made any conclusions? The 90M, no matter how you look at it, is still the same good old T 72, I have no idea where the Armata is, there has been little information about it since the start of the SVO, a pilot batch of 200 units has long been in the troops, but there is still no information about them, but we will 100% see it at the parade .... They decided to resume production of the T 80, albeit in the BMW version .... The equipment of the 80s in one form or another will fight for a long time, and the demand for it will be good, there are good ideas in the form of Armata and Abrams X, but the first is in hardware, but not in production, the 2nd is generally at the concept stage, not even a prototype, there is also the Panther, there too, there is not even a prototype yet, and the fresh Leopard 2e are being produced ... It turns out that no one has drawn any conclusions from the SVO?

Will Abram be much lighter? About 300 kilos? And survivability without a grill is not survivability...request
