Russian Foreign Ministry: Russian military bases in Syria continue to operate, but the issue has not been finally resolved

Russian military bases in Syria continue to operate, but the question of their future fate has not yet been resolved, said Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

The Russian delegation visited Damascus for the first time since the coup and held talks with representatives of the transitional government of Syria. During the dialogue, many issues were touched upon, including the fate of two Russian military bases. It is not known how things will be with other issues, but no agreement has been reached on the bases, although no one is demanding that they be closed immediately. In general, Khmeimim and Tartus continue to function, but the talks will continue.

Nothing has changed yet. This issue requires additional negotiations. We have agreed to continue more in-depth consultations on each area of our cooperation.

- Bogdanov stated.

Earlier, EU representatives said that they demanded that the new Syrian authorities remove Russian military bases from the country's territory in exchange for lifting sanctions. However, Damascus is in no hurry to fulfill this demand; perhaps the Russian offer is more advantageous. In general, bargaining is underway.

Let us recall that Russia has two military bases in Syria: the Khmeimim airbase in Latakia and a logistics support point (MSP) in Tartus.

There is no certainty that we have already decided on our position on Syria. This is firstly, and secondly, do we have the financial, technical and situational (taking into account the problems of the Black Sea Fleet) opportunities to participate in Syria today.

Do we continue to supply bread to Syria or not? And who will pay for it now? If we stop supplying for free, we will fly out like a cork from champagne.

Yes, the issue has most likely already been resolved, they just don’t know how to say it without offending too much, or maybe they are bargaining more with Europe for the expulsion of the bases.

And the main culprit of the "celebration" is sitting here with us and is probably not saddened by the problems that Moscow now faces.

Well, he couldn't, he couldn't (c). By the way, to be honest, he wasn't the only one who couldn't. Where were our advisers? All these spies and masters of quiet war. In theory, we should have relied on more than one, prepared replacements for every need, and generally managed the situation. It seemed like everything was in place for that...

It's strange, the Turks are walking around calmly, occupying territories on their side, Israel occupied all the Golan Heights, there was a division, part of it was controlled by Syria, or rather, there were Russian bases. Part of it was controlled by Israel. Now Israel controls everything, they occupied all the reservoirs, they are building bases and no one is asking permission.

In the East they like to bargain for a better deal, but then they also like to stab you in the back and this is not considered something bad. You should always keep this in mind.

Vadiy S hi, well, in the East it seems like you can't deceive your own, and we're not theirs. That's why their laws don't apply to us.

As always, the negotiations are veiled, hidden behind a diplomatic fog.

We need to leave the rest of Syria, it is hard to imagine what will happen there now. In its current form, our military is just hostages in the hands of jihadists.

There are some showdowns going on in Syria between the "democratic forces", so they don't have time for our bases yet wink

There is no one to negotiate with yet. We must mercilessly punch in the teeth anyone who interferes with the functioning of the bases, without being embarrassed by whose mandates they wave. We must also ensure the safety of local suppliers, calmly shooting those who run over them and interfere with their work. There will be noise. Endure, not paying attention to it. And always be ready to repel a massive assault.
As a result, the bases will become an island of calm and stability in a disintegrating Syria, which will bring considerable benefits. If done correctly.

Russia is not the USA, we don't have a normal fleet that can destroy half the country. And the leadership has big problems with Faberge.

There are a lot of people on the site who are carrying on with nonsense that is not related to the topics of discussion. Here it is about bases in Syria, and what are you talking about? Let's talk about space or quantum "physics" right away...

What I mean is that the new Syrian authorities are demanding that the US bases be removed. They will decide to attack these bases.

The real situation is this: evacuation with all weapons, or destruction of weapons on site so that they do not fall into the hands of Banderovites or for free to anyone and withdrawal of personnel, another option is the surrender of weapons to the new government in exchange for the free withdrawal of personnel. Maybe someone sees other options, I do not. request

There is no need to delude ourselves. Russia has certainly lost the Syrian campaign, and its withdrawal from Syria is a matter of time. And quite soon.

Fighting one war with its Black Sea neighbor has taken up most of Russia's resources in terms of personnel, defense capability, and budget. For now, Russia can forget about these two military bases.

There is such a term - "imperial overstrain". The geostrategist tried to play on many chessboards at once. The result at the moment is very similar to that described in the famous book by Ilf and Petrov.
