40 years of the legendary combat helicopter Mi-24 (part of 4) Modifications P and VP

MI-24P, MI-24VP

Despite the high characteristics of the YakB-12,7 machine gun, he did not fully suit the army Aviation. Gradually came to the thought of the need to equip the Mi-24 30-mm automatic gun GSH-ZOK. But the mass and recoil force during firing did not allow its placement in the USPU-24 installation instead of a machine gun. The GSH-ZOK was mounted motionless in the U-280 installation on the starboard side of the helicopter, and the combat button was placed on the pilot's control handle.

In 1975, the tests of the Mi-24P helicopter (product 243) began, which, due to the refinement weapons dragged on for more than five years. Only in April, 1981 g. Cannon modification launched into mass production. The subsequent operation of the machine revealed a lack of efficiency and limited application of the fixed gun.

Experience has shown that it is much more rational to use a mobile cannon-mount NPPU-24 (9А-4454) with an 23-mm double-barreled gun GSH-23Л. The helicopter, equipped with this installation, received the designation Mi-24VP (product 258). Compared to the machine gun USPU-24, the firing sector in the horizontal plane did not change, but the vertical deflection of the barrels became possible in the range from + 10 ° to - 40 ° (previously from + 2 ° to - 60 °). The mass of the installation did not change, but the rate of fire was reduced from 5000 to 3400 shots / min.

the shape is the best helicopter, and the design is already out of date, there are more rivets than there are stars in the sky, and the blades ... to do something ... there is something good to be proud of, but what about MI-35? maybe there are newer developments, but this is the case of other articles.

    More on cannon weapons Mi-24:

When upgrading the Mi-24, the South African company Advanced Technologies and Engineering (ATE) installed a 20 mm South African GI-2 automatic gun (a copy of the French Giat M621) on the Vektor F2 turret on the helicopter. The gun is powered from two stores (it is possible to use different types of ammunition) with a total capacity of 840 shells. The gun can be aimed at the target using a thermal imaging system of the front view, a television sight, a helmet-mounted target designation system or a system for displaying information on the windshield.

As a further development of the artillery armament of Mi-24 family helicopters, the following installations are possible:

    • French turrets THL 20, with a 20 mm gun Giat M621, or THL 30, with a 30 mm gun Giat M781. Turrets provide a firing sector of ± 90 ° in azimuth and from -25 ° to + 28 ° in elevation;

    • hanging container NTs-621 with a 30 mm gun.

In addition, in 2001, at the Le Bourget air show, a modernized Mi-24 (Mi-35M) was presented with an artillery unit located in the transport department.

The article has a photo and no description ...

In order to build up the Mi-24 firepower at Vympel GosMKB in the late 70s, under the leadership of G.A.Sokolovsky, a universal helicopter gondola GUV-8700 (9A669) was developed with one high-speed 12,7-mm machine gun YakB-12,7 , with 750 rounds of ammunition, and two high-temperature 7,62 mm GShG-7,62 machine guns, with 1800 rounds of ammunition.

in addition to machine guns and cannons, the Mi-24 can be armed with an AG-17A (213P-A) grenade launcher

Universal helicopter gondola 213P-A (left) and universal cannon container UPK-23-250 with GSh-23 gun

The aviation version of the AGS-17 Flame grenade launcher was put into service in 1980. The AG-17A is located in the GUV closed gondola (universal helicopter gondola) with 300 rounds of ammunition in a single tape and is used for arming combat helicopters. Unlike the infantry, the aviation version of the grenade launcher is equipped with an electric trigger, has a shot counter, and the rate of fire is increased to 420-500 rounds / m. The barrel is equipped with a massive radiator, which helps cool the barrel at a more intense rate of fire. Since when shooting from a flying carrier (helicopter), the grenade acquires additional speed, the pitch of the rifling of the barrel is reduced from 715 mm to 600 mm to increase the speed of rotation of the grenade and ensure its stabilization in flight. Body weight AG-17A - 22 kg.

Maybe it’s just that there’s not so much space in the cargo compartment, in the sense from the floor to the ceiling panel, so the shooter should not be tall

I know that there is not much space. I, for example, will not get up to my full height, I was inside the 24th.
and the installation is with a saddle, lordly. although, of course, if you want to lower the trunk very down, you still have to jump the arrow

And why do you need to put a photo montage photo with an MI-24 span 1,5 meters above the chain of down-lying fighters, the quality is such that it seems that the soldiers are in a position along the crest of the ridges 2,5-3 kilometers high and 2-3 meters wide, and after a moment the helicopter will “stick” into this ridge. Why should such a blunder spoil an article about the wonderful "workhorse" of front-line aviation?

In my opinion, the modification "P" is the most successful of all modifications of the "Crocodile" ...
Unlike the rather capricious and unreliable YakB machine gun, the artillery system GSh-2-30 was easier to maintain and operate, gave fewer failures, was less sensitive to pollution. And the range of ammunition was an order of magnitude higher than on a machine gun ...
Naturally, all this made it more preferable for arming the Mi-24 than the YakB-12,7 machine gun ...

And a little air art with the Mi-24P ...

About turret, thanks, neighing. The turntable was clearly dragged away when firing, so I had to reduce the rate of fire with recoil and put it on a vibrating stand in the nose, so that it was pretty cheap in white light.

Subsequent operation of the machine revealed a lack of efficiency and limited use of a fixed gun.

Experience has shown that it is much more rational to use a mobile cannon mount NPPU-24 (9A-4454) with a 23-mm GSh-23L double-barreled gun. The helicopter equipped with this installation received the designation Mi-24VP (product 258). Compared to the machine gun USPU-24, the horizontal firing sector has not changed

That is, the turret is no more mobile than the side gun. Just tell me what didn’t work properly in a normal location at the center of mass.

I think that the Mi-24 is quite a heavy machine for mounting a fixed runway even so successful. A turret version with two 23mm barrels is preferable. Still, maneuver by fire is an order of magnitude higher. And as it turns out, there was such an option, but it did not get wide distribution. Obviously there are problems with reliability, which, I hope, we will learn from the coming publications.
