US Begins Deploying Modified Nuclear Bombs in Europe

Among European NATO countries, only France and Great Britain have their own nuclear weapons. Moreover, none of their armies have a full-fledged triad; British nuclear weapons are deployed on four old nuclear submarines. The number of warheads fluctuates between 200 and 300 units; there is no exact data.

Until recently, especially during the Cold War, Europeans counted on the American "nuclear umbrella", which they could be deprived of by Donald Trump, who will soon officially take office as US President. However, election threats and promises are one thing, and quite another when a politician seeks real power. Trump is no exception. In this case, the metamorphoses are literally the opposite.

Speaking at the Hudson Institute, US National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) Director Jill Hruby announced that the US has already begun deploying modified nuclear bombs to Europe.

The United States has begun deploying modified B61 nuclear bombs in Europe, the B61-12 version. The new B61-12 gravity bombs are fully deployed in forward positions, and we have increased NATO's use of our nuclear capabilities.

— said the head of NNSA.

The final batch of these nuclear bombs was delivered to the U.S. Department of Defense in December, according to the NNSA. The total number of these bombs, which feature a new plutonium core and were manufactured at the Y-12 National Security Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, has not been disclosed.

The B61-12 aerial bombs, which replaced variants 3, 4, 7 and 10, have a lower power (0,3-50 kilotons) compared to them. However, this is compensated for by a new tail unit, which makes the aerial bomb controllable and more accurate, which allows it not to be released with a parachute, but to be dropped from an aircraft flying at high altitude, after which the bomb autonomously glides towards the target for many kilometers, if necessary "taxiing" to it.

As of 2023, about 100 older variants of the B61 - B61-3/-4 tactical bombs were stored in underground storage facilities at NATO allied air bases in Europe. Fifteen nuclear bombs were deployed at Büchel in Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany), Kleine Brogel (Belgium), Volkel (Netherlands) and Ghedi (Italy) air bases, and 15 bombs at Aviano (Italy) and Incirlik (Turkey). They can be used by F-20A, F-35E, F-15 and Tornado tactical fighter-bombers.

According to Khruby's statement, the UK will now also receive a number of new nuclear-tipped air bombs. However, the British Isles have long been in the crosshairs Strategic Missile Forces The Russian Armed Forces, so the appearance of new ammunition will change little for us. But the Europeans have taken another step, as they believe, to strengthen their own security, but in reality everything is exactly the opposite.

It will be interesting to see the reaction of the US if Russia places its nuclear bombs in Venezuela, for example... Or in Cuba... Or in some other problematic places in the Middle East... In Iran, for example... What is there to be embarrassed about...
I remember that NATO cynically linked all preparations for missile attacks to Iran...

What to look at? Our government will never allow itself to drag our tactical nuclear weapons to those places!

Trump is wooing someone who fled from a nuclear submarine screaming that he doesn't want to serve on it anymore, that there are no portholes on it, and who plunged headlong into politics and rose to the rank of congressman for the position of head of the NNSA. It will be fun - a lieutenant and a nuclear arsenal.

And how far can these free-fall bombs fly?

Like their JDAM, like our FAB with UMPK

If I'm not mistaken, about 80 km in free fall.

Depends on the altitude. The US is building new bombers for nothing, which will hang in the air for a long time and are hard to see and stuffed with electronics.

It would be interesting to show Europeans infographics with the designation of nuclear weapons impact zones. Most likely, even the most alternatively gifted would understand the dependence on the location of pro zones, military bases, nuclear storage facilities and the number of megatons per square kilometer.

Better not. Because the infographics in question may upset you first of all.

Only complete idiots can rely on and believe the words of these Western politicians. We have known such idiots since the collapse of the USSR.

So what? Russia won't use nuclear weapons anyway, even if they're bombed! The US will use them if it thinks it'll gain an advantage and won't take much damage!

The role of nuclear air bombs is unclear: they don't fly far, the carrier is vulnerable, the bomb itself, if they taught it to glide like JDAM, is also vulnerable to air defense. Previously, during the Soviet era, it was logical - the enemy was rushing to the English Channel and it was convenient to bomb the advancing groups from the depths of their territory, but now? Does anyone really believe that Russia can launch an offensive on Poland? (for example)

The majority of Russian nuclear charges were produced half a century ago. It must be understood that over such a period of time the charges degrade to some extent, and this degradation can critically reduce the combat readiness of the charges. The West suspects that Russia has not paid sufficient attention to this problem, and currently Russia's nuclear weapons have largely lost the necessary combat readiness. In principle, this may be true. To refute this assumption, a demonstration is needed. That is, either a test on Novaya Zemlya or a nuclear strike on NATO territory. Otherwise, the West will believe in Russia's lack of weapons and will arrange a nuclear Armageddon for us.

Well, according to their concept, in the theory of a prompt strike with small nuclear charges, the political leadership and strategic objects, including the nuclear triad, are taken out.

There are already a lot of reasons! But they hope to reach an agreement! Well, if there is still nuclear power left! But billions were poured into it, and everything is classified; in theory, there could be another Timur Ivanov there.

    " MOCK:
On a submarine with a nuclear engine
Yes, with a dozen bombs under a hundred megatons
Crossed the Atlantic and the call of the gunner:
“Aim,” I say, “Petrov, at the city of Washington!”

True la la, true la la,
I can do everything for three rubles!
    Hello, new land
    Enemy!

And on the plane above is my friend Vovochka
He didn't come to visit with empty hatches,
On a submarine with a nuclear engine
The crew began to sing a cheerful song.

True la la, true la la,
We can do everything for three rubles!
    You burn, burn earth
    Enemy!

The lights along the Norfolk shore are sweetly dozing,
The tired toys are sleeping, the blacks are sleeping quietly,
    Forgive me, America, good America,
But five hundred years ago you were discovered in vain."
