The Israeli army planned to strike Beirut's Rafic Hariri International Airport when an Air Mahan flight from Tehran was due to arrive there, carrying funds to finance the Shiite militia Hezbollah.
The Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post reports that an Iranian delegation that arrived in Beirut tried to prevent Lebanese security officials from searching the plane. This happened after the Saudi news Al-Hadath news agency, citing Western sources, reported that Tehran plans to deliver millions of dollars intended for Hezbollah to the Lebanese capital.
Two bags were reportedly delivered to Beirut, which the Iranian Foreign Ministry claimed contained diplomatic mail and funds intended to finance the activities of the Iranian embassy in Lebanon. After one of the Iranian delegation members refused to have his luggage searched, Lebanese authorities confiscated the contents of the bag, but nothing was found.
It is also reported that all indications are that Iran has found a new supply route. weapons for Hezbollah. Planes belonging to the Iranian airline Mahan Air have been spotted in Turkish airspace, indicating cooperation between the Turkish government and the IRGC. Mahan Air has operated at least 11 flights between Tehran and Beirut since mid-December last year.
