"I remain your president": Salome Zurabishvili refused to leave her post, calling the country's elected parliament illegitimate
98
The President of Georgia refused to leave her post, even after her term expired. Salome Zurabishvili stated this in a special address to the Georgian people. According to her, the elected parliament is not legitimate.
I remain your president! There is no legitimate parliament that would elect a new president – my mandate is valid until there is a legitimately elected parliament that would legitimately elect a president who should be in my place
– Zurabishvili’s statement reads.
Against this backdrop, protesters are once again gathering in central Tbilisi. Police are preparing for a new wave of unrest.
Recall that the day before, during the protests, law enforcement officers had to use water cannons to disperse protesters against the Georgian parliament's decision to suspend negotiations on Georgia's membership in the EU. Georgian legislators decided to postpone this issue until 2028.
It is worth noting that during yesterday's riots in Tbilisi, police detained more than 100 people. Ten law enforcement officers were slightly injured, and another received serious burns.
Let us add that the opposition protests in Tbilisi are taking place with the direct support of Western countries, which were dissatisfied with the results of the parliamentary elections in Georgia and the decision of the deputies to suspend negotiations on the country's membership in the EU and the refusal of grants from the European Union.
