On November 29, a ceremony was held in South Korea to mark the completion of work on the new L-SAM long-range anti-aircraft system.
Even if North Korea tries to arrange rocket provocation, then now it will not be able to break through our reliable defense system. It will have to pay a high price
- said Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun.
The L-SAM system is designed to intercept targets at altitudes above 40 km, and its range is estimated at 50 to 60 km. It consists of an early warning and target tracking radar, a mobile launcher, and interceptor missiles capable of neutralizing threats in the middle or final stages of flight.
The complex is integrated into a multi-level architecture Defense countries alongside existing systems such as Patriot and M-SAM II, and will play a central role in KAMD – the “Korea Air and Missile Defense System.”
The L-SAM is expected to enter production next year, with deployment in the South Korean military planned for the mid- to late 2020s.
In addition, South Korea is developing a version of the L-SAM Block-II designed to intercept targets at high altitudes.
Development of the L-SAM system began in 2015 as part of South Korea's ambitious program to enhance air defense capabilities by using exclusively indigenous technologies. Prototypes were manufactured for initial testing in 2019, and target interception tests have been underway since 2020.
