Potential tank carrier: BAZ 6x6 as an example of real import substitution

Peaceful truck for wartime

It is worth starting with stories Ippolit Romanov, a Russian engineer and inventor who created the first domestic electric cars. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, he became one of the pioneers in the motorization of Tsarist Russia. His electric cabs were distinguished by their progressive design by world standards - for example, each wheel was driven by a separate engine. Even now, not all elite electric cars can afford such luxury.

In 1899, Ippolit Vladimirovich presented his developments to the famous industrialist Pyotr Frese, and they made a good impression on him. As a result, they assembled a couple of light electric cars, and a little later the first domestic omnibus appeared, in which horse traction was replaced by electric traction. Romanov's cars were well-made, but they did not interest the tsarist government, which meant that there was no money for the ambitious project. As a result, the talented Russian engineer was forced to emigrate to the United States in 1918, where he left the world in 1944.

What is this story all about? Because an automobile manufacturing company named "Romanov" has appeared in Russia, and right now its sites are mastering the production of the BAZ 6x6 heavy-duty truck. The Romanov plant is an example of how to organize the assembly of sovereign cars on the capacities abandoned by Western companies. We are talking about the St. Petersburg enterprise Scania-MAN, which for obvious reasons has been empty since 2022. The result is a hodgepodge, in which the Swedish-German site and JSC "Romanov", which is bringing into series production a truck named BAZ (Bryansk Automobile Plant).

BAZs have almost never been civilian automakers. In Soviet times, a backup of the Likhachev Plant (ZiL), or rather its Special Design Bureau, was built in Bryansk. Later, BAZ turned into an independent plant producing heavy equipment for the army, but standing one step below the Minsk and Kurgan wheeled giants. Now it is difficult to understand the confusing naming scheme and affiliation of the main character, the BAZ 6x6. As is known, the Bryansk Automobile Plant is part of the Obukhov Plant defense concern, which is within the perimeter of Almaz-Antey. In recent decades, BAZs have been focused on working primarily as carriers of complexes Defense and other high-tech products. But "Romanov" has nothing to do with Bryansk - it is a separate project aimed at the civilian market.

There are two possible reasons for the emergence of such a complicated scheme: first, BAZ (which is in Bryansk) is fully booked in military orders and has no time for civilian trucks; second, Romanov is trying to distance itself from the military role of Bryansk vehicles. The latter will help to bypass international sanctions and more actively promote the all-terrain vehicle on foreign markets. Something similar was done by the Kama Automobile Plant before the SVO, when it took the defense Remdiesel outside the perimeter. However, this did not help to avoid sanctions.

BAZ 6x6 will hit the market in the summer of 2025

The flight of foreign automakers from Russia, in addition to a lot of troubles, created a lot of opportunities. For example, BAZ 6x6 would never have found a site for assembly if it were not for the empty areas of Scania-MAN near St. Petersburg in the industrial zone of Shushary. As was said above, Bryansk is now full to the brim with military orders. Like KamAZ, Ural, UAZ and others. All that remains is to borrow the production areas kindly provided by Western "partners".

It is worth mentioning right away that the hero of the material, the BAZ 6x6, is a purely civilian vehicle. At least for now. The big guy occupies an empty niche of heavy all-wheel drive trucks for difficult climatic conditions. The first users will be geologists, oil workers and other extreme workers. A special feature of the truck was the almost total use of domestic components. Bridges, engine, suspensions, Belarusian frame, cabin, transmission - everything is ours. The Telegram channel "Russian cars" comments on import substitution at BAZ:

"Symmetrical frame side members (coated with cataphoretic primer) are made by the Zhodino Forging Plant of Heavy Stampings. Engines and gearboxes are from Yaroslavl, gearboxes come from the "parent" BAZ (from Bryansk), and transfer boxes - from Naberezhnye Chelny, from ZMT. All other parts are also from Russian or Belarusian suppliers: Borisov Power Steering Plant, Obukhov Plant, Avgust, Rostar, Khors, Itelma... Even the multimedia device in the cabin is called by the Russian word "Molniya", although, of course, it is made in China (perhaps this is the only Chinese part in this car)."

An exception can be made by the aforementioned supplier of electronic equipment, Itelma, which has established import substitution for most components (ABS, engine management systems, multimedia, etc.), but chips and some microcircuits still have to be purchased in China.

Tough guy

Readers and authors of "Military Review" could not pass by news about the BAZ 6x6, which is being prepared for series production. Firstly, this is a rare case of developing such a complex vehicle from scratch. In Russia, they have been copying European and now Chinese technology for decades. And suddenly such a beauty. Secondly, the attention to the truck is not accidental in connection with the situation in the country. No one is belittling the need of oil workers and geologists for a heavy vehicle, but military needs should not be forgotten either. The BAZ 6x6 first appeared in public almost two years ago, and even then it became clear that it was a tasty morsel for the army. First of all, as a tank carrier, of which there are never many at the front. There is a particular shortage now of heavy vehicles capable of pulling lowboys not only on asphalt.

The BAZ 6x6 from Romanov turned out to be a tough little thing, and what is important is that the design of the product has already been fixed to pass all the necessary certification tests.

If in May 2023 we wrote more about a research prototype or a technology demonstrator, now we are talking about a car that will soon go into production. The first production cars are planned for the summer of 2025. Just listing the technical solutions will delight any techie. The car has fully independent suspension on all wheels, and all axles are interchangeable. You can even remove one of the rear axles and put it on the front. And vice versa. This trick is realized due to the fact that all axles are the same - it's just that the steering rods are locked on the rear axles. A very practical solution for the civilian market, while increasing the survivability of the car in combat conditions. If the customer has the desire and opportunity, the steering rods can be left unlocked on the rear axles, and the truck can be made fully steerable. Both rear axles and one outer axle can turn. According to the chief designer of JSC Romanov, Yuri Shipilov, the vehicle can be equipped with either a hydraulic or mechanical rear axle steering system. To increase ground clearance and cross-country ability on heavy soils, all BAZ axles are equipped with wheel reducers.

The BAZ units and assemblies are distinguished by a solid margin of safety

There are four known modifications of BAZ-Romanov submitted for testing and certification. These are the basic chassis for customer add-ons, a tractor unit, a dump truck and a flatbed truck. But that's not all. The customer can choose from five types of cabins (all made of fiberglass), two wheel arrangements (6x6 and 6x4), as well as the length of the wheelbase. The total mass of the tractor unit can reach 36 tons, and the maximum frame length is 12 meters. In the latter case, most likely, the BAZ will already be four-axle. The developers indicate a minimum wheelbase of 3,6 m and a maximum of 6,6 m. The engine of the all-wheel drive is not impressive in its power - YaMZ 653.1 with 357 horsepower, but it is possible to install a 500-horsepower Yaroslavl diesel. But for now it is in the category of promising. Chinese diesel and gas Weichai will be more expensive. It seems to be a deviation from the dogmas of import substitution, but here it is the customer's will - the domestic YaMZ remains the base one.

The BAZ 6x6 was clearly designed with a solid safety margin. This is given away by both the massive components and assemblies, and the large unladen weight of the truck. In the world of commercial vehicles, the ability to take more cargo into the back than you weigh yourself has long been a golden rule. For example, the classic KamAZ-65115 dump truck in its unladen state pulls 10 tons, and takes all fifteen on its back. The heavyweight from Romanov weighs 19 tons, and the load capacity is “only” seventeen. If overweighting the vehicle is used, then we have a truck for truly difficult conditions. An ideal tank carrier for the SVO. The only obstacle to military service may be the frame-panel cabin, which does not provide for the possibility of armoring. But this limitation can be circumvented by simply welding a separate cabin for the BAZ. But all this is just fantasy. The real future of the truck was quite clearly expressed in the Telegram channel “Russian Cars”, and there is not a word about the military path:

"The plant's payback period is 8 years, which means it will be around mid-2033. And there is almost no doubt about it, given the level of state support for the project, the prospects for interaction with the FRP and the signing of the SPIC (to compensate for the recycling fee). It is also important that Romanov has chosen a very clear market positioning, betting on obviously wealthy buyers: oil workers, timber industry workers, gas workers, Siberian and polar builders. In these industries, the boundary between a government order and a commercial purchase can be very conditional, and the selection criteria are not limited to price and the size of the kickback. In most tenders, the determining factor is the level of localization. BAZ, with its almost 2% Russian aggregate base, will give odds to all other car factories using Chinese components. It may turn out that XNUMX thousand cars a year from JSC Romanov will simply not be enough for the market."

Good news anyway good , more RUSSIAN cars, the country is huge, and besides KAMAZ there are only foreigners on the roads.
If only someone would start manufacturing OUR special equipment, otherwise in this business we are completely dependent on imports negative

      Also Urals and MAZs.
But the question here is not about patriotism
      RUSSIAN
, but in real qualities. When ours make the level of mana or scones, then everything will be imported by itself. And you can transport grain on a KAMAZ 00x.

BAZ 6x6 was clearly designed with a solid margin of safety. It
are issued as massive units and assemblies
, as well as the large curb weight of the truck.

massiveness is the absence of either a "weight culture" or the necessary materials - high-strength steels...
but this is by no means a "safety margin"...
and also, from what is shown in the photo: independent front axle suspension... why do we need such know-how?

We live in a strange way, we had to invite foreigners to assemble their trucks from their own components, then drive them away and start assembling our own truck from our own components (Belarusians have their own, we live in a union state after all) and a little from Chinese ones, and only because we can no longer buy their trucks. And how was it possible to do this before, before that and then? We need a golden cockerel to knock on the crown of our heads.

      Strange

      Basic example - AvtoVAZ.
it was necessary to invite foreigners

Why would a qualified foreigner go to some Russia? Only if the salary is higher than at home and even more for the shift and relocation. We don't even get average European market salaries)
      from their own components

That is, to transport an entire truck somewhere across half of Europe in order to assemble it in Russia, with your own hands, and you also need to bring in a conveyor line.
      then drive them away

      On what legal grounds?
and start assembling your truck from your own components

      And who will do it?
Look at VAZ. The French bought it. There is no talk of any quality cars or assembly. What kind of machines, crooked hands and spare parts are there, and they assembled it from those. They put Romanian crap on the conveyor, which can be made in Russia, at a local base, on local machines and with local hands, as a result, just as AvtoVAZ was a bucket, so the local Renault is also the same crap, although better.

That there is something seriously wrong with the terms and terminology in the modern Russian language in the technical field.
Why did trailers for transportation suddenly start to be called lowboys?
So, is a tank trawl a mine clearing device or a multi-axle trailer, or maybe a fishing net?
Is there a lack of words in the Russian language? But then there is a foreign word for a trailer, there is such a term as a trailer. Previously, they said trailer, not lowboy.
    1. +3
      26 November 2024 13: 55
A trailer is a general term for a trailer. And the word lowboy has been used for a long time to describe a low-deck heavy-duty trailer. That's what they called the trailer for the tractor that in 1986 or 1987 brought the Vityaz DT30 to the gas pumping station where my dad worked. I don't remember the brand of the tractor. One of the army missile tractors. And it remained under the control of the gas pumping station under construction near Pechora. SeverGazProm had a lot of advanced equipment on its balance sheet at the time. They even brought a river/sea diving boat for some reason and put it on the balance sheet of the gas pumping station. But a trailer for a tractor was never called anything other than a lowboy!

The emphasis on export sales and the fear of sanctions is very annoying. Firstly, the domestic market has always been and will be a priority. Secondly, those who need it will buy abroad no matter what. Everyone pays for the fear of everything with their freedom. One agency and one bank should be responsible for foreign sales. No small businesses or individuals. Otherwise, first we scream, our migrants have left and there is no one to work, foreign eggs and feed have become more expensive - and then we boast about exporting eggs, meat and grain abroad, which could be used for sale within the country and for feeding our own poultry and other livestock.

      focus on export sales

Why do you need a car that is worse than foreign analogues? Export potential is an indicator of the level and competitiveness of the product.
We have a great example of a product aimed exclusively at the domestic market. These are Ladas. Abroad, only the poor need them, and now no one, not even our own, needs them, because the Chinese are better, and the price is the same. So the "competitive" one has died.

Well, Chinese cars here are just crap in a gold wrapper - it's just strange that the Chinese don't make contracts with dealers in the Russian Federation for more than 1 year. And you can't find spare parts if anything happens. And Chinese cars are almost never cheaper than ours. And some are more expensive than Japanese or German cars were 3 years ago. The point is that we need to close the import of what we can produce ourselves (in the case of cars, we can just force them to produce here by buying out licenses). And the export of products that we ourselves then drag back from abroad - grain abroad and then meat and eggs back - and could have used them for cattle feed at home. Warehouses for potatoes and other things need to be built back so that there is a place to store them longer (they practically use all their potatoes for chips until the New Year). There is nowhere to put the sprouted grain or rotten potatoes or beets, because of the rains, the local distilleries have closed down and now they are also dragging vodka for 50 km or more. Like sugar and milk and many other things. The logistics of stupidity are immeasurable.

Well, Chinese cars here are just crap in a gold wrapper.

And there are almost no Chinese cars cheaper than ours anymore.

For the same price - it's like heaven and earth.
It is better to buy a Chinese car for 2 million than a Granta. All the car enthusiasts I spoke with say that for the same money it is better to buy a Chinese car than a VAZ or even, in some cases, a Renault.
Just go and find spare parts if necessary.

Nobody complained. Especially since half of the parts there are not unique Chinese, they assemble them themselves from licensed components. The body and interior are essentially Chinese.
more expensive than 3 years ago

Nowadays everything is more expensive, that's not an argument.
The point is that we need to close the import of what we can produce ourselves.

That's the thing, we can't. Even the same Ministry of Internal Affairs buys just Chinese, officially, they even equalized Chinese cars and domestic ones and gave them full, equal access to bidding. Now, if a new crossover is needed, they will buy not UAZ, but Changan, which will even win the bidding, because it is not more expensive, but better. That's competition, everything is according to the law, according to bidding.
in the case of cars, it's just stupid to force them to produce here with the purchase of licenses

Well, Muscovites started doing it. It's not fast to master production. First they'll master assembly, then they'll see which parts they can make themselves.
Actually, it was like that with the Soviet auto industry. First a foreign license, then we'll learn how to make it ourselves.
And the export of products that we ourselves then drag back from abroad - grain abroad and then meat and eggs back - but we could have used them as cattle feed at home

It's all about quality and price. What fertilizers and feeds are made abroad from our own raw materials - there is a big difference. And you need to look at who they sell to and who they buy from.
They can sell to countries where there is a real problem with products, and buy feed and fertilizers that no one in Russia can make.
To be honest, in my opinion, it's better to sell the crap and buy something good. Than to eat it yourself. While such an opportunity exists. And if not, you need to look for temporary solutions and switch to your own, but equally high-quality. And this is not fast.
Another question is why they didn't do it earlier. Although they did. And they substituted imports very quickly, and many things in a fairly short time, simply by allocating money for their own production, the developments had been there for a long time.
          local distilleries closed

I wish they would close everything.
          Like sugar and milk

Nonsense. I've never seen foreign sugar and milk in my life.

No need to change... serial heavy mining dump trucks are already taking work away from some Belaz models. The same trends are with military chassis. Unification is important for industry, an example of this unification is Tatra. Thanks to this, it has spread throughout the world. In the days of MZKT, there were no civilian trucks with comparable characteristics. Now there are diesels (more than one) of 550 hp and higher with a resource of 1 million km. And bridges and gearboxes....

MZKT makes both oversized and standard-sized equipment. Everything is on the same website. But, multi-axle road-sized tractors are not a very popular product. For this, there are much cheaper multi-axle trailers.

And BAZ is debuting with a four-wheel drive model. Squeezing it into the road dimensions - such stupidity can only come to your mind. Why would you need a 6x6 on a hard road? It's not a fancy SUV for showing off.

I think they chose 6 x 6 to start the project simply because it is easier to launch, cheaper for the buyer and easier to find customers, who have already been appointed. If the series goes into production normally, there will definitely be an 8 x 8 version, and a more powerful engine, and orders for the Army. I think that not only as a tank carrier.
And now let production start on a simpler model for civilians, but for special conditions and purposes.
