The new 120-mm self-propelled artillery system 2S42 "Lotus" with anti-drone protection has successfully passed tests in the SVO zone

The experience of a special military operation has shown that one of the most dangerous, and widely used, destructive means for any armored vehicle can be ordinary, rather inexpensive drones-kamikaze, including those controlled using FPV technology.

A skilled operator can bypass almost any anti-drone defense and strike at its most vulnerable point. Using fiber optic cables for guidance drones nullifies drone suppression by means of EWThis set the task of creating additional means of protecting equipment from UAV attacks.

At the same time, engineers of the Russian military-industrial complex are constantly working on the invention and improvement of not only the protective, but also the destructive characteristics of military equipment, taking into account the experience of the SVO.

Russian airborne self-propelled amphibious assault vehicle artillery The 120 mm 2S42 Lotos self-propelled artillery gun (SPG), used mainly by the Russian Airborne Forces, will receive new means of countering attack drones. Some details of the performance characteristics of the new self-propelled artillery gun developed by TsNIITochMash are described in the Telegram channel of the Kalashnikov concern, which includes the institute that developed the new SPG.

The new anti-drone defense system, and the artillery mount itself, first of all passed combat testing in the SVO zone, it was successful. The next stage will be official state tests, after which serial production of the "Lotus" will begin and delivery to the troops. The new artillery mount with improved protection and other improved performance characteristics will replace the 2S9 "Nona-S" and 2S9-1 "Sviristelka" self-propelled artillery systems developed back in the USSR, which have been in service with our army since the 80s of the last century.

Initially, this (additional protection from kamikaze drones) was not provided for in the technical specifications, because when the technical specifications were drawn up, no one thought about the threat of drones. Therefore, now, in parallel with state tests, we are selecting the best solutions for protection against UAVs, so that by the end of state tests and the start of serial production, we will have an appropriate solution.

рассказал President of the Kalashnikov concern Alan Lushnikov told the international television channel RT.

He added that following the testing of the 2S42 Lotos self-propelled artillery gun for the Airborne Forces in the SVO zone, all the wishes of the military who used this installation in real combat conditions were taken into account. Taking this into account, certain changes will be made to the technical specifications, which "were formed quite a long time ago."

During preliminary tests, the Lotus demonstrated that it surpasses the 2S9-1M Nona-SM self-propelled artillery system in terms of firing range of standard high-explosive fragmentation projectiles by 1,5 times, carried ammunition by 2 times, and the integral power indicator of the main high-explosive fragmentation projectile.

In turn, the director of JSC TsNIITOCHMASH Mikhail Ludanny said that in the future, Lotos may receive a guided active-reactive 120-mm munition with a range of up to 30 km, which will bring it closer to the capabilities of the combined arms divisional self-propelled gun 2S19 Msta-S. Most likely, we are talking about a new glide munition, which has the same code name "Glissada". Earlier, the developer reported that the firing range of the designed projectile will reach 25 kilometers.

The SAO "Lotus" is based on a modified BMD-4M chassis, maintaining unification with its main units and assemblies, which reduces the cost of development and will allow for rapid production on current lines, since the platform is already in serial production. In addition, the self-propelled gun, compared to Soviet analogues, has significantly improved armor protection. The new product is equipped with automated guidance drives, providing increased speed and accuracy of gun guidance, as well as mechanized ammunition stowage, facilitating and accelerating the loader's work

The main thing is that the Lotus is equipped with a modernized 120-mm universal smoothbore gun 2A51, compatible with any 120-mm shells and mines, including NATO models. Thanks to the extended barrel, the range of hitting targets has increased, and the accuracy of fire has also increased. As experts note, the new self-propelled gun can effectively hit individual targets, participate in fire ambushes and support assault operations.

Another wonder weapon that will be, and not is in the troops. Thanks to the careerist thieves and saboteurs from the Ministry of Eyewash. Advertising from the category, but we write like horses in the rear. The mob should not worry. And in LBS, the Ukrainian drones are chasing individual fighters like in a shooting range. And my review about the losses was cowardly erased. Well, the truth is bitter, like vodka, this is not wine for you

Well, that's a different matter. The main thing is that the projectile is mass-produced, not one-off.
The main armament of the "Lotus" is a 120 mm caliber gun. The gun is based on the BMD-4M chassis. The Rostec press service reported that the weight of the new vehicle is 18 tons, the maximum speed is 70 km/h, the engine power is 450 hp, and the cruising range is at least 500 km.

. The Russian defense industry continues to develop, introducing modern technologies into artillery. Recently, JSC TsNIITochMash, part of the Rostec conglomerate, announced a new high-precision artillery shell for the 2S42 Lotos self-propelled gun. This shell is capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 30 kilometers, which significantly increases its combat capabilities.

The weapon is based on the BMD-4M chassis.

I think that the same thing, but on the T-72 base with normal anti-shell armor, would have more prospects. It could be used as an assault gun, specifically an artillery gun, with howitzer-mortar capabilities for direct support of assault aircraft, and not a ersatz in the form of a tank adapted for firing from a ZOP.

The tank has a larger caliber. If it had a new shell, like "Glissad", it would be great.
And this self-propelled gun can swim and is going to replace the outdated ones. And the towed hundreds have long been replaced by something self-propelled

The tank, by its nature, fires only with a flat trajectory. It will not throw a projectile over an obstacle and will not fire from behind cover. There is much that is useful in howitzer and mortar fire. And the tank's maximum vertical aiming angle is 20-25 degrees, in total.

Then why "anti-shell" armor if the fire will be conducted from cover? For firing from a closed position there are 122 and 152 mm guns.

Why are tanks used today in the SVO to help stormtroopers, especially in populated areas, when somewhere behind them there are Akatsiya and Gvozdiki? Why were ISU-152s given to assault groups during the Berlin operation? I think, as a "killer sledgehammer" where the enemy does not surrender. And the anti-shell armor is so that it can work in the same line with stormtroopers. Even shell fragments that fell nearby penetrated both sides of Akatsiya... Then they brought "62" and "55" to the SVO.

KUBINKA /Moscow region/, June 28. /TASS/. A new guided active-reactive gliding projectile (code name "Glissada") with a firing range of up to 25 km is being created for the promising self-propelled artillery gun (SAO) of the Airborne Forces "Lotus" developed by TsNIITochMash (part of Rostec). This was announced at the "Army-2019" forum by the chief designer of "Lotus" Veniamin Schastlivtsev.

"Our proposal is that it is necessary to deliver this type of work, the Glissade code, with a guided active-reactive gliding ammunition. The maximum range can be obtained in 25 km," Schastlivtsev said.

In developing the Glissada, it is proposed to use the developments previously obtained during the creation of new ammunition for the promising 152-mm self-propelled artillery system Koalitsiya.

"At the same time, we assume that this work should be developed on the basis of the homing head of a munition with a large controlled range, which is currently being developed in a 152 mm caliber for the Koalitsiya-BP," the designer noted.

On "Izolenta Life" Andrey Klintsevich, who is constantly in touch with the officers of the SVO, shared the following statistics: now, thanks to the work of electronic warfare on both sides, only every fifth drone reaches its target. Both ours and the Ukrainians. But on LBS, drones are used in the shooting range on both sides.

I wonder what kind of protection against drones is provided. Now without it, no equipment can be allowed close to the contact line. And people too.

It is a pity that five years, and often decades, pass between the development of new models and their entry into the army. During this time, countermeasure technologies make many products irrelevant.

Let me ask something simple. Why SAO (gun), and not SAU (installation). They used to call it SAU, why change it? Does the gun move by itself, or does it move when installed on a specialized chassis?

The difference is in the type of guns: on the installations there is a howitzer, and on the guns there is a gun-howitzer-mortar.
The predecessor of the Lotus, Nona, also belongs to the SAO
