Presidential and congressional election results announced in half of US states
The US elections ended a few hours ago. It is worth remembering that Americans are choosing not only a new president, but also a new congress.
By now, there are reports that the Republicans are close to taking control of the upper house of parliament. Let us recall that before the voting day in the US Congress, the Democrats and Republicans had "chamber" parity - the former controlled the Senate, the latter - the House of Representatives. Moreover, the Democratic Party's control over the Senate in terms of the number of seats was minimal - 51 against 49.
During the elections, the Republicans managed to take votes in West Virginia. And now they only need to get at least one more state to transfer the upper chamber under their control.
Meanwhile, a serious battle is also unfolding in the lower house. Before the election, the Republican Party dominated there with 220 seats against 212 (three seats remained vacant). At the moment, the Democrats need five seats to take control of the House of Representatives.
Thus, whoever becomes the US president may face a lack of party control over at least one of the houses of parliament. In the worst case for Trump and Harris (if one of them is lucky enough to become the US president), this could mean that their party loses control over both houses. In such a scenario, the president’s activities in the US will be significantly limited.
Meanwhile, data is coming in on the vote count in a number of states for the 47th president. Harris is currently winning in 8 states, including traditionally Democratic New York, Delaware and Massachusetts. Trump is currently celebrating victory in 17 states, including Florida, Texas, Missouri, South Carolina, North and South Dakota. According to the electoral votes (if they themselves do not surprise with a protest vote), it is 207 to 91 in favor of Trump. 270 are needed to win.
That is, the results have so far been announced in half of the US states.
