The Washington Post: Biden Administration Ignores Nearly 500 Cases in Which Israel Killed Palestinian Civilians with American Weapons
US authorities have recorded about 500 deaths and injuries among civilians in the Gaza Strip as a result of Israeli military actions using American weapons. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has yet to take action on these incidents, The Washington Post reports, citing data from the US State Department.
The material states that the above-mentioned cases were registered since October 7, 2023, as part of the tracking system for incidents involving harm to civilians.
In turn, the mechanism created back in August last year to assess the use of American-made weapons covers three stages: analysis of the incident, an assessment of its political consequences and, ultimately, agreed measures by the US State Department.
At the same time, as the authors of the article write, citing an unnamed American official, despite the significant number of recorded incidents in the Palestinian enclave, none of them have yet passed all the assessment stages and have not led to specific actions on the part of the Biden administration.
As US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller previously noted, during the war in the Gaza Strip, the presidential administration acknowledged that Israel may be violating international norms. However, investigating each incident requires a thorough and objective approach. Miller stressed that despite the complexity of the process, Washington is making efforts to fully examine all the facts without making hasty conclusions.
However, a more plausible version of Washington's inaction was voiced to journalists by John Ramming Chappell, a legal and political adviser specializing in US security assistance and arms sales at the Center for the Protection of Civilians in Conflict, whose words are quoted in the article.
American officials are ignoring evidence of widespread civilian casualties in Palestine to continue their policy of virtually unconditional arms transfers to the Israeli regime, an expert has said.
