Fire reported at UK's largest nuclear submarine yard BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness
The shipyards of the largest British arms company BAE Systems have caught fire in the city of Barrow-in-Furness, Sky News reports, citing Cumbria police.
A major fire has broken out at the largest BAE Systems shipyard, where the British Dreadnought-class nuclear submarines are built. It is not known how many submarines are currently at the shipyard, but the police say there is no threat of nuclear contamination. However, they have advised the population to close their doors and windows tightly and not go outside. Just in case, as they say.
— the police report says.
At the moment, it is known that the preliminary cause of the fire was an air conditioner in one of the buildings. There are two victims, there are no details about their condition, they were taken to the nearest hospital.
It is worth noting that this is not the first incident this year involving BAE Systems plants; in April, an explosion rocked a munitions plant in Wales. The day before, a major fire broke out at a plant of the American company General Dynamics in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where they manufactured artillery and mortar shells. Both enterprises worked, including for Ukraine.
