Is the Korean Peninsula on the brink of war?
Arrows of criticism against the DPRK and its nuclear tests fell not only from South Korea. All permanent members of the Security Council, including China and the Russian Federation, expressed their concern that Pyongyang is not going to listen to the aspirations of the world community, which (aspirations) are aimed at the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. After the discovery of alarm on its part, the UN Security Council decided to adopt another resolution aimed at ensuring that official Pyongyang slowed down its "nuclear momentum." This time, the sanctions concern bans on overflights of aircraft in the DPRK and from the DPRK over other countries if there is information that there are prohibited materials on the aircraft (materials used in the creation of rocket technology and nuclear warheads). In addition, the resolution imposes restrictions on trade relations with North Korea if these relations are based on trade in nuclear technology and other related things. The resolution contains items that relate to restrictive measures against officials of the DPRK related to the development of the nuclear program in the country.
Well, so that Kim Jong Un, as they say, didn’t seem like life with honey, they decided to arrest the accounts in foreign banks of representatives of the North Korean authorities, import of jewelry, yachts and luxury cars to the DPRK. How much the North Koreans were offended by the last point of the resolution - we can assume by the number of luxury cars on the roads of Pyongyang and snow-white yachts in the ports of the DPRK ... But the seizure of funds could have manifested itself within a few hours after the adoption of a formidable resolution. The fact is that the Americans and South Koreans announced the discovery of hundreds of millions of dollars allegedly belonging to Kim Jong Ynu in Chinese banks. After that, Washington and Seoul demanded that Beijing seize the accounts of the DPRK leader. They say that the resolution was supported, so be kind ... The Chinese, although they really supported the resolution on the DPRK, they still looked askance at the “partners” from the United States and South Korea and said that they personally have no data on the presence of Mr. Kim’s accounts in the PRC banks and in general: there is such a democratic concept as the secret of a contribution, and therefore - if you want to arrest - arrest in your banks, if you find ...
Washington and Seoul, of course, hissed, but it didn’t get any further. But after the resolution, serious movements began to be observed in the country against which the resolution was directed. First, the people of North Korea themselves, and then the whole world learned that the North Korean authorities decided to withdraw the country from the agreements with South Korea on mutual non-aggression. In addition, the masses were told that the DPRK would annul the statement about the complete abandonment of the development of the nuclear program and break off absolutely all contacts with the southern neighbor down to the telephone line connecting the two states. These decisions were announced in a completely infernal tone by the announcer of the Central Technical Radio Center (Korea Central Telegraph Agency). The woman who read the information that the external aggressors were again plotting against the DPRK seemed literally on the air to rush out of the studio and show Seoul where the crayfish spend the winter ... However, she withheld ...
On Monday, South Korea, jointly with the United States, began military exercises called Key Resolve. About 3,5, thousands of troops, are involved in the exercises from the United States, South Koreans have deployed a 10-thousandth contingent. In addition, third countries will also join the teachings. In particular, participation of British, Australian, Canadian, Danish and even Colombian troops is expected.
According to the South Korean media, the exercises are aimed exclusively at maintaining security on the Korean Peninsula and are defensive (what else ...) character. This character they will wear right up to March 21, after which the commanders will report on the results and record how secure the peninsula is on the peninsula ...
The answer from Pyongyang to the begun teachings was immediately followed. The same female announcer again went on the air and with breathtaking expression, which many Russian contemporary actors cannot achieve, announced that the DPRK authorities and people are as united as ever and are ready to respond to the intrigues of the enemies even with a nuclear strike. Then Kim Jong-un's words sounded, quoted as a quote: “Seoul and Washington can turn into a sea of fire!” The North Korean press immediately picked up a wave and declared that the DPRK's army had a terrible weaponwith which she can respond to any provocation in her address.
The central print publication of the DPRK "Nodon Sinmun" is broken with angry articles about the aggressive behavior of the United States and South Korea in close proximity to the maritime border of the DPRK. Here is one of the quotes: “The United States of America, together with its South Korean puppets, intends to limit our state and our people in development, to stand in the way of the successes we have achieved under the leadership of our leaders. But our country is not going to serve the will of the enemies. Our fighters possess the most formidable weapons in the world, able to protect people from aggressive militarism. ”
As they say, explained their position more than intelligibly.
After a series of recriminations, claims and statements about 100% determination, the South Korean publications conducted an internal survey in 5 major cities of the country regarding the concern of the local population about the reality of the threats expressed by Pyongyang. So, it turns out that about two thirds of the South Koreans surveyed are confident that Kim Jong-un can take the most extreme step and deliver a nuclear strike on South Korea. Only about a quarter of respondents said that Pyongyang once again satisfied with information provocation and pressure.
If we consider statements about the threat of a nuclear launch on South Korea from the territory of the DPRK, then such statements from the north of the Korean Peninsula do not come for the first time. The previous leader of the DPRK, Kim Jong Il, promised to smash Seoul into chips at the time. It was connected with another crisis of bilateral relations and all the same sanctions against the DPRK. However, Kim's father did not go on to turn his belligerent promises into reality, for which North Korea won certain commodity indulgences from neighbors and a number of Western countries. Despite the fact that truly productive negotiations between the North and the South did not take place under Kim Jong-il, relations turned into a plane: “we are, as it were, refusing to strike a blow on you (South Korea), but from your side we are expecting product changes” . Well ... The progress really did not keep them waiting.
Exactly like this historical a precedent may occur this time if Washington and Seoul do not go too far with their teachings. If they shoot “quietly and peacefully” without hitting the adjacent waters and territories, then Kim Jong-un will slow down. And if he reduces it, then in exchange for “food parcels” from those who now, speaking in the lexical turn of the North Korean press, are on the way to the development of the North Korean state.
But is Seoul with Washington really not going too far? Is it really that the “accidental” artillery projectile will not be fired towards the “partners” from the north? If released, it will be a real provocation, even putting to brackets the fact that the DPRK with its nuclear tests and the stigma itself, let's say, into a cannon ... But with all the assurances about saving "world democracy" expressed by the United States, Washington is unlikely to decide now to take tough measures in the Far East. After all, at least three obstacles float to the surface. Firstly, the DPRK has some kind of nuclear weapons, but still, but in the USA they are no less afraid of them than in South Korea. Secondly, it is extremely risky to kindle another hotbed of chaos, and in the immediate vicinity of several of its key partners in Asia (South Korea and Japan). Thirdly, a big war (and definitely not a small one, and certainly victorious) will be costly, and there are plenty of them for the USA today and without this war.
Another thing is that now the United States can actively push its idea of deploying the Far Eastern missile defense system, which supposedly will protect all East Asian progressive humanity from the threat posed by the "rogue state." But this is a more likely scenario to continue the story. It turns out that with all the hysteria of Seoul and Washington about the North Korean nuclear tests, these very tests are very beneficial to the latter. Indeed, under the guise it is possible, sorry, to intercept missile defense both near the Chinese border and in close proximity to Russian borders. So in this case, the problem is not limited to the territory of the DPRK alone. The game, apparently, goes at larger rates ...
