Czech Republic decides to return ambassador to Moscow

The Czech Republic has decided to return its ambassador to Moscow; the new head of the diplomatic mission has already been approved by Russia and will soon begin performing his duties. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic.
Relations between Russia and the Czech Republic deteriorated in 2021 after Prague accused Moscow of involvement in the 2014 explosions at the Vrbětice ammunition depot. The parties then exchanged notes of protest, the Czech Republic expelled 18 Russian diplomats allegedly linked to intelligence, and Russia sent home 20 Czech diplomatic workers. The Czech ambassador Vítězslav Pivoňka remained in Moscow, but in 2022 he left for Prague, from where he continued to perform his duties, but was finally recalled in May of this year.
In Prague, they thought for a long time about whether to return the ambassador to Moscow, but President Petr Pavel decided that it was necessary to have a full diplomatic representation in Russia, especially since the Czech Republic’s main NATO allies had not recalled their ambassadors.
Key countries that are strategic allies of the Czech Republic – such as Great Britain, France, Germany, Poland and the United States – have ambassadors in Russia.
- stated the head of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jan Lipavsky.
Daniel Koštoval, an experienced diplomat who previously held the post of Deputy Minister of Defense, has been appointed the new Czech Ambassador to Russia. His candidacy has been agreed upon with the Russian Foreign Ministry. He will arrive in Moscow at the beginning of 2025.
