Over time, any automotive equipment becomes obsolete and requires modernization or replacement. Updating the design by replacing key units allows technical and operational characteristics to be brought into line with modern requirements. One example of this approach to improving existing equipment is the GAZ-66MB multi-purpose vehicle project.

Update problem

In 1964, the Gorky Automobile Plant began production of a new all-terrain truck, the GAZ-66. This vehicle was created primarily for the needs of the armed forces and soon became the main army medium-tonnage truck.

GAZ-66 made a huge contribution to the logistics of our army, however, during mass operation in peacetime and in combat conditions, certain shortcomings were revealed. Complaints were made about the wasteful engine, the specific performance qualities of the truck, the ergonomics of the cabin, etc. In addition, great risks were associated with the cabover layout of the cabin and the lack of protection.

Unfortunately, these problems were not solved at the time. However, attempts are being made to modernize the old truck and make it a modern vehicle. Another project of this kind, which received the index GAZ-66MB, was presented last year.

Project "MB"

The Nizhny Novgorod plant carried out a deep modernization of the car. aviation society". It presented the result of its project at the military-technical forum "Army-2023". At the exhibition, they revealed technical data and presented full-fledged prototypes. They also announced the possibility of building equipment of other modifications.

Two prototypes of the GAZ-66MB were delivered to the exhibition. One of them had a fully armored body and was intended for use as an ambulance. The second prototype had a shortened cabin and a cargo platform on which the artillery system

The deep modernization of the old truck predictably attracted the attention of specialists and the general public. The modernized GAZ-66 began to be compared with its predecessor and was given positive assessments.

However, the future of this interesting project remains unclear. "NAO" could continue development, develop a number of modifications and prepare future production. However, information about new successes of GAZ-66MB has not yet arrived. Apparently, this car has not yet managed to find its customer and move beyond exhibitions.

Design improvements

The GAZ-66MB project from the Nizhny Novgorod Aviation Society involves a major redesign of the original truck. Some key design features have been changed, and the main units have been replaced and new ones developed. All these measures have reportedly allowed the technical and operational characteristics to be brought to a new level.

The "MB" type vehicle is built on the basis of an existing GAZ-66 truck as part of its major overhaul. The rebuilt vehicle changes significantly both externally and internally.

The basic wheel chassis has undergone significant changes. While retaining the rectangular frame, it received a new engine and other important elements. The new truck is equipped with a modern diesel engine YaMZ-534 with a capacity of at least 135 hp. The transmission and chassis have been improved, but have not changed fundamentally.

On the highway, the car reaches speeds of up to 105 km/h. The cruising range is 800 km. The car can overcome slopes of up to 30° and fords up to 1,2 m deep.

To increase protection against detonation, a bonnet layout was chosen. The engine is now located under its own bonnet-hood, behind which there is a full-fledged cabin of traditional design. The cabin is an armoured box with armoured glass, providing protection from fragments and bullets of small arms. weapons.

A wide range of cabins and other units has been developed to accommodate various loads. The customer can choose a single- or double-row cabin for 2 or 5 seats. An extended van of standard or increased height is also available. Depending on the shape and layout, the cabin can have one or two pairs of doors on the sides, as well as rear doors.

Two variants of cargo platforms are offered. The shortened flatbed body can be used with a double-row cabin, and the full-size body is compatible only with a single-row cabin. The maximum load capacity in all cases is 2 t.

By combining cabins, vans and cargo platforms, several types of vehicles can be created on one chassis. These can be two types of trucks, a cargo-passenger vehicle, a command and staff vehicle or an ambulance, etc.

At the Army-2023 forum, they showed a vehicle carrying weapons. It was a truck with a two-row cabin and a shortened platform. The latter was equipped with a ZU-23M-1 anti-aircraft artillery mount from the New Defense Technologies company. In essence, this is a modernized version of the old Zushka, supplemented with modern control and guidance systems.

Protected infantry transport

Regardless of the configuration, the GAZ-66MB is 5,97 m long, 2,32 m wide and 2,55 m high (by cabin). When using bodies, the height by the awning reaches 2,76 m. The vehicle's curb weight is 5,8 t, and its gross weight is 7,8 t.

Age difference

The GAZ-66 and GAZ-66MB vehicles were created with a difference of almost 60 years. During this time, the requirements for trucks have changed significantly, and the basic truck no longer meets modern standards. Therefore, its deep modernization is an obvious and necessary step.

The new GAZ-66MB was created taking into account the rich operating experience of its predecessor and therefore has a number of advantages over it. These improvements were achieved through some changes in the overall concept and replacement of key units. However, the declared increase in the main characteristics fully justifies such a restructuring.

One of the main problems of the GAZ-66 was its insufficiently powerful and economical petrol engine. The new project uses a modern diesel engine with higher performance and lower fuel consumption. In addition, it has more power, which fully compensates for the increase in weight and improves the vehicle's driving performance.

Cargo version with armored cabin

The most significant innovation in the MB project was the original family of cabins. Thanks to them, the old truck was transformed into a multi-purpose armored vehicle. The cabin armor protects the driver, passengers and troops from shelling and shrapnel, and the special arrangement of the units reduces the negative consequences of an explosion.

The GAZ-66 chassis could be equipped with various body options, vans with different contents, etc. The new GAZ-66MB retains these capabilities, implementing them with the help of modern components. In fact, the equipment of the car depends only on the customer's needs.

Need for replacement

In general, the new multi-purpose vehicle GAZ-66MB looks interesting and promising. It has obvious advantages over its predecessor, shows higher technical characteristics and is able to solve all tasks more effectively. Such a vehicle may indeed be of interest to some customers.

However, it should be taken into account that the new GAZ-66MB will have to compete not only with its predecessor. There are currently a number of trucks on the market that have similar characteristics and functionality. Perhaps this is the reason why there have been no reports of orders for upgrading old GAZ-66s so far.

The same question. In the army there is a cabover Kamaz (and there are not enough of them, Kamaz appeared in the SVO zone, painted in gray and orange colors, but with army numbers and tactical signs) and a bonnet Ural.
That's it. There are no other trucks.

It seems that the person who wrote the article about the modernized shishiga is "out of this world".
Does he know about the successor of the 66th GAZ 3309, which has been produced for many years?
By the way, it is strikingly reminiscent of the MB pictured in the photo. lol
There is a hood, and a diesel engine, and gas bridges with limited slip clutches. Just add armoring to the cabin and body.
Another thing is that it is proposed to use the frame and chassis from cars in storage. I doubt that there are any significant numbers of Shishigas left in storage.

Probably, there are "shishigas" in storage, but in what quantities... And is it worth it? "Sadko" is mass-produced, "shishiga" is not inferior in cross-country ability, and surpasses it in other parameters... Remaking "shishigas" on the "knee" in a small series is a dubious benefit. That's why no one was interested in this topic

The Shishiga engine obviously needs replacing, but the chassis itself is almost perfect. The fact that it is possible to bring it up to the required condition will pay off a hundredfold, especially in mud and snow. I was always amazed at its cross-country ability in snow and mud, it has ideal dimensions + engine power, GAZ 3309 will not pull this.

How can a cabover design be safe for detonation? The driver sits above the front axle, which runs over a mine and he gets everything. It is the bonneted design that has the axle shifted forward and the detonation occurs under the engine and not under the driver in a cabover design...

In general, the layout is different - the original Shishiga was a cabover truck with a folding cabin, like the Kamaz.
And we mustn’t forget the gearshift lever, almost behind the driver’s back, to the right.
We had a duty unit, I drove it a couple of times. It was a creditable device.
Well, and the narrow vents in the pillars near the windshields - were very useful for ventilation. Here everything was rearranged - "1.5 meters of life" (c) was made.

"no protection" - this is a transport truck, not an armored personnel carrier, it was not originally designed with protection. "Risks associated with a cabover configuration" - what are the risks associated with a cabover configuration? By the way, a version with a hood has long been produced on the basis of the Shishiga. Did you armor the cabin? Well, now both KAMAZ and Ural trucks are armored. The engine is not economical, eats a lot? Well, change it, it modernizes. It began to accelerate to a speed of 105 km per hour on the highway. Does the Shishiga need such a speed? And I also want to ask the author: what does the engine now have to do with the chassis?

If a cabover truck runs over a mine with its front axle, the cabover truck driver is a 200% XNUMXth, he is sitting above the front axle. And in a bonnet truck, the engine will take the explosion mainly - the front axle is shifted forward compared to a bonnet truck. So the bonnet truck driver has a chance to stay alive. And there was real evidence of this.

Military trucks need armor to varying degrees. In some places, you can get by with a bulletproof vest on the door and a plate under the butt, but in others, every second or at least third vehicle should have a fully armored cabin and a machine gun on the roof.
Armor and a machine gun on the roof can determine the fate of an entire column. Either all the cars will burn, or the attackers themselves will become victims of return fire. Do not spare money on armor and machine guns.

The frame and transmission are all that's left from the original truck. The engine, cabin, and body are completely different. Is this called a "major overhaul"?
It's like a mash made from an axe.
A soldier was walking home from duty and was tired on the way. He was very hungry, but he had nothing. Approaching a village, the hero knocked on the first hut, asked to rest, and to ask for food. An old woman lived there, she let him rest, but she was sorry for the food for the soldier and said that she herself had nothing. The soldier saw an axe under a bench and offered to cook porridge from it. The old woman gave him a pot, and the soldier washed it and put the axe in the pot on the fire, began to stir. He tried it, said there was not enough salt. The old woman ran for salt. The soldier cooked the axe again. He tried it and asked for a handful of cereal. The old woman ran, carrying a bag of cereal. Then the soldier asked for butter - the old woman brought butter.
The soldier cooked some porridge, and he and the old woman sat down to eat. The old woman was surprised that such delicious porridge could be cooked from an axe, and asked the soldier: "When are we going to eat the axe?" He answered that the axe was not cooked, and he would finish it on the way and eat it. So the soldier ate the porridge and took the axe away.

A miser pays twice. Wouldn't it have been easier to make it from scratch instead of remaking the old one? Putting a new engine on an old worn-out transmission - who came up with that?

The admiration for Shishiga is mainly related to its cross-country ability in difficult conditions. In Soviet times, our geophysical party had a three-axle Ural with a winch and a Shishiga with a geophysical station.
In order to drive normally on drilling rigs and especially on winter roads, our craftsmen removed the winch from old Urals and installed a kung with a station taken from Shishiga. It turned out much better.

On a snow-covered winter road, the second gear is low and no higher than 10 km/h. Although a couple of those converted into shift buses worked well. Well, as a rule, new cars are designed with maximum use of serial components. But their combination plus a range of options for newly created components, the same cabins, bodies, etc. and, most importantly, the organization of production in terms of ensuring the quality of components and assembly, most often requires a revision of the entire organization of production, which is often impossible at the previous site even with the necessary capacity.

So, it seems like the Kazakh guys made the Buran?! Or not? I don't remember anymore. At first they had options with reworking the standard cabins from the 66. Then they started making armored cars.

Buran's armor is weak. It doesn't hold up well to shrapnel.

Well, the armor can be strengthened. Buran does not hold artillery shell fragments. The cabin can be recalculated for a more durable one. Especially relevant for the medical version. Spaced ceramics. Less cargo. But it will get there.

The chassis has axle loads...both Buran and this one will be equally armored

Not necessarily. Ceramics are stronger, although more expensive. The only question is the desire to finance it.
The main armor is steel. Ceramics on top with a gap.

What's wrong with this version of improving the same GAZ 3308 "Sadko"? Tweak the reliability, and it will be a completely normal participant in the SVO.

To increase protection against detonation, a bonnetless design was chosen. The engine is now located under its own hood
So, "bonnetless configuration" or "under its own hood-cover"?

[quoteTo increase protection against detonation, a cabover layout was chosen. The engine is now located under its own hood-casing, behind which there is a full-fledged cabin of traditional design.][/quote] A cabover cabin?! The author and editors are great. But in fact, you need to take the Tiger chassis and put a cabin from the Gazon Next for civilian use there - it will be a "bomb" on the market. And what is in the article cars should then be made on the basis of the Gazon Sadko Next. And the mothballed GAZ 66 should have been sold off long ago, along with the PTS.

The Tiger is a very good car, but it has a complex suspension and transmission. In addition, it is produced in small series. And, as a result, the price is high.
Here we see an attempt to make a mass-produced armored truck on a serial chassis. Not the worst attempt.

To increase protection against detonation, a bonnetless design was chosen.

How is that? They wrote so much here that it is the bonnet configuration that increases protection against a mine explosion.

Updating the design by replacing key units allows technical and operational characteristics to be brought into line with modern requirements
    .
A pathetic attempt to pass off necessity as virtue. Updating the design of a sixty-year-old car will not bring it up to modern requirements. The Moskvich 408 will not let you lie.

The ZU-23M-1 installation in this form is not quite right. The installation needs to be slightly raised so that its horizontal rotation plane is at the level of the vehicle roof. Then its fire will be more effective at all 360 degrees.

There is also a missing machine gun on the roof of the cabin. Since the cabin is armored, there should be a remote control vehicle with a machine gun on top. There are many wishes to express, but the truck itself is being discussed.

In the army in Soviet times I drove a lot on 66. I know all the pros and cons. I even got used to the gearshift knob, which is located to the right and behind the driver by 50 cm. The driver's eye cannot see it.
I remember how the car stood for 2 weeks in -25 frost. They installed a new battery. It started on the first kick, to the surprise of many.
The cross-country ability is super. Until it hits a bridge, it drives.
    Reliable car, never broke down.

The presented variant is simple and uncomplicated for our time. It is impossible to make it simpler for a military machine. The machine is very necessary as a replacement for a loaf of bread.
Unfortunately, there is no talk of even starting its production.
Obviously, there are no production capacities. Why do Russia need car factories?
There can be no talk of purchasing such a machine abroad. No one will sell it. We are one on one with the enemy in this war.

Here is a cargo version with an armored cabin, it is very good. It is especially appropriate to replace the gasoline engine with a less capricious diesel engine and it would be good to reduce the area of the cabin glazing.

Why make a fuss about this if there has been a GAZ-3308 Sadko for a long time???

And on the basis of Sadko the armored car Buran has long been made, by the way. What to build? It needs to be done.
