European Commission sues Hungary over sovereignty protection law
32
The European Union continues to put pressure on Hungary for its desire to defend national interests, which often run counter to Brussels' policies.
Now the EU has decided that Budapest passed the "wrong" law last December. This is the Law on the Protection of Sovereignty, which provides for control over foreign funding of election participants and criminal liability for receiving money from abroad.
The European Commission, which had already expressed dissatisfaction when the law was adopted last year, considered that it violated EU law and decided to sue Hungary in the EU court.
The European Commission today decided to take Hungary's case to court because it believes its national "Sovereignty Protection" law violates EU law.
- the European Commission said in a statement.
In Budapest, they explained the adoption of the Law on the Protection of Sovereignty by the fact that during the parliamentary elections in the country in 2022, some foreign forces tried to influence them by sending millions of dollars to support certain candidates and parties.
Now, if anyone is caught using money of foreign origin in an election campaign, they could face up to three years in prison.
