Designed for raid operations: Ukrainian Armed Forces demonstrated the use of the Hawkeye self-propelled howitzer

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have shown footage of the use of the American 105-mm Hawkeye self-propelled howitzer mounted on the chassis of a light armored vehicle HMMWV. As indicated, the shooting took place at a training ground.

Despite the age of the system, first presented in 2011, it is still considered an experimental weapon. It was transferred to Ukraine by the developer, AM General, and began testing in April of this year.

The Hawkeye remains an experimental prototype and has not yet entered production. Only a few units have been produced, two of which have been delivered to the US Army.

- said in the Western press.

It is assumed that based on the results of the howitzer's use in Ukraine, a decision will be made on its delivery for the needs of the Pentagon.

The Hawkeye is characterized by its light weight, small dimensions and low recoil force, which allows it to be used on light platforms. In this regard, the howitzer can be intended to equip highly mobile troops, providing fire support to motorized riflemen during raid operations.

As the developer explains, the maximum firing range is 11,6 km when using standard ammunition and 19,5 km when using active-reactive projectiles. Direct fire is possible at a distance of up to 2 km. Thanks to rapid deployment and removal from the position, Hawkeye is capable of making two shots within three minutes and leaving the threatened zone. Although, judging by the footage, the Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers could have achieved a higher rate of fire.

This, as I understand it, is a low-ballistics weapon, like our "Nona". A good idea, to fire a shot while rolling, which significantly reduces the recoil. Previously, I encountered something like this only in machine guns. (in PP)

They tried it already in 1957
"French engineers had been experimenting with reduced recoil (also called 'fire-out-of-battery' - FOOB) since the early 101th century. However, the first operational example of the FOOB concept in the United States was a modified M1957 towed howitzer tested in 1965, which was further developed into the completely new FOOB gun tested in 1971, and the development and successful development of the M1978 105mm low-recoil gun (weighing 204 kg, or 1814 lbs) from 4000-XNUMX."

Cool thing. And the platform really doesn't twitch much.

The installation itself is quite small, which significantly simplifies camouflage. The rate of fire, judging by the video, is high - the shells themselves are not very heavy, the loader will not get tired quickly. In addition, the computerized fire control system is also a significant plus. For using the tactic of bang a couple of times and run, it is a completely suitable system.

Ukraine has become a military testing ground since 2014, thanks to the NATO bloc and, naturally, the US

Isn't the Floks self-propelled gun an analogue of this installation?

Lightweight gun. On the one hand, it's good - you can put it on a light vehicle. But on the other hand, the question immediately arises: What is the service life of this gun? It's too flimsy. Will it not turn out that after a couple dozen shots it will go for repairs?

Let them envy our "Gvozdika" - armor, cross-country ability, ammunition - and it also floats!

Yes, the Ukrainian Armed Forces' favorite tactic of "wandering mortars" is taking on new colors. Only they used this tactic in residential areas of the DPR.

... Direct fire is possible at a distance of up to 2 km. ...

Probably - much less than 2, for a typical target? I have not found such a performance characteristic as direct fire range:
