"Nobody Wants It": Poland Has Failed to Form the "Ukrainian Legion" Promised to Kyiv
23
Poland has failed to form the so-called "Ukrainian Legion" promised to Kyiv. As it turned out, there are no Ukrainians who want to go to the front to fight against the Russian army among those who fled abroad. This was stated by Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.
There will be no "Ukrainian Legion" formed from Ukrainians living in Poland and other countries; there were no volunteers to die for Zelensky. They did not flee Ukraine to return there voluntarily, and even straight to the front. Even the promise of Polish citizenship under a simplified scheme did not help. In general, Poland threw up its hands, adding that there were no volunteers.
There are no volunteers. We prepared for this. It was within the framework of the agreement signed between Poland and Ukraine, but we are not responsible for recruitment.
— said Kosinyak-Kamysh.
According to the minister, when the agreement with Kiev on the formation of the "Ukrainian Legion" was signed, the plans were the most optimistic, it was assumed that there would be "no end to those who wanted to join." According to preliminary estimates, there should have been enough volunteers for an entire brigade, which the Poles were supposed to equip. Then the plans were revised in favor of forming a battalion. But in the end, no one could be recruited.
