Japan's HVGP hypersonic land-based missile spotted for the first time
An image has been published online showing the first sighting of rocket installation placed on a ground mobile platform. According to Western observers, this system is equipped with a hypersonic weapons:
Earlier, in July 2024, the Defense Department announced that two HVGP tests had been successfully conducted in California in March and April, marking the beginning of testing of the missile since its development began in 2015. Footage of the weapon's launch was also released.
The HVGP is expected to provide Japan with an unprecedented level of strategic deterrence due to its ability to glide at hypersonic speeds, evade missile defenses, and strike targets with pinpoint accuracy, the defense ministry said. The missile, which can change trajectory in flight, is designed to overcome modern systems. DefenseThe estimated range will be approximately 900 km.
The HVGP will be deployed in two variants, Block 1 and Block 2. Block 1 is an early variant and features a boost launch system and basic glide capabilities. It is approximately 8-9 meters long.
Block 2, the performance model, is an upgraded rocket that is over 10 meters long, has a more advanced glide mechanism, and a more powerful booster. This version is designed for increased range and possibly greater payload capacity.
