Parameters and capabilities of the UAV "Albatros M5"
Preparing the Albatros M5 UAV for takeoff, June 2023.

Last year, the Russian army received and began using the first Albatros M5 unmanned aerial vehicles. These Drones are designed for aerial reconnaissance and have improved flight and technical characteristics. Over the past time, they have become widespread and demonstrated their capabilities.

New sample

The M5 UAV is one of the latest developments of the Albatross company, founded in 2017 in Korolev, Moscow Region. Initially, the company was engaged in the production of civilian drones, but in 2022 it switched to developing military products. In 2023, it moved to the Alabuga special economic zone in Tatarstan.

Albatross LLC offers several light and medium aircraft-type drones capable of carrying surveillance equipment. In 2022-2023, the company adapted one of the ready-made designs for military use. This drone was named Albatross M5.

In the first half of last year, the design work was completed, and the prototype successfully passed all the necessary tests. At the same time, serial production of the M5 was established in the Alabuga SEZ. In the near future, it was planned to send the first batch of these drones to the troops for trial operation and use in combat zones.

Launch by catapult

The appearance of the Albatross M5 in the Special Operation zone became known in June 2023 from a report by the Ministry of Defense. By that time, the new drones were already being used in units of the Ivanovo Guards Airborne Troops. The report showed preparations for takeoff and reconnaissance using these UAVs.

At the end of March 2024, the management of the Albatross company reported on the success of production. At that time, the company assembled and delivered 30 UAVs per month to customers. It was also announced that it was possible to expand production capacity and double the production rate.

In June, approximate production plans for the current year became known. The state transport leasing company, which oversees the production of the unmanned aviation, reported that 400 Albatros M5 drones will be assembled this year.

Drones at the front

During the Special Operation to Protect Donbass, the new Albatross series UAVs are used as another aerial reconnaissance tool. They fly to search for and detect enemy targets, or take turns on duty in the air.

The Albatross operator at his work station

Basically, the Albatrosses operate in the interests of the missile forces and artilleryAccording to their data, various barrel and rocket systems are conducting their combat work. At the same time, the use of such UAVs in the interests of other branches of the military is not excluded.

At the end of March, the Albatross company announced that its drones were already being used in various areas of the front and in almost all directions. However, more precise information about the number of UAVs in the troops remained unknown.

On August 21, Rossiyskaya Gazeta clarified this data. According to its information, there were about 50 drones in the combat zone at that time. They are actively used for reconnaissance and show high results. Unfortunately, there are small losses, but the overall achievements outweigh them.

On September 27, Izvestia reported that the Albatros M5 UAV had begun to enter service with the Russian army. Against the backdrop of previous News This information looks strange and raises questions. Perhaps the publication did not mean the fact of the delivery of drones to units, but some formal procedures related to this process.

UAV reconnaissance

"Albatros M5" is a reconnaissance UAV with increased range and flight duration characteristics. It is the largest in the product line of Albatros LLC and is capable of solving the most complex tasks.

Manufacturing of airframe elements

The UAV is designed as a flying wing. The main element of the design is a swept plane with a span of 3,3 m, on which a pair of keels are placed at the bottom. The glider is made of plastic and is equipped with removable consoles that simplify transportation. The takeoff weight of the drone reaches 15 kg.

The nose of the craft houses a brushless electric motor with a propeller. The motor is powered by four lithium-ion batteries of unspecified capacity, which are housed in a compartment inside the wing. These same batteries provide energy to all onboard systems and the payload.

The maximum flight speed is 120 km/h, cruising speed is about 70 km/h. The UAV can stay in the air for up to 4,5 hours, and the maximum route length reaches 300 km. Takeoff is carried out using a launch catapult, and a built-in parachute system is used for landing.

The payload of the Albatross is 5 kg. It is possible to install different types of optical-electronic systems. The video signal from the OES is transmitted to the operator via a secure radio channel and/or recorded on an internal storage device.

"Albatros M5" disassembled

The operator of the M5 system uses a control station built on the basis of commercial electronics in a protected design. Standard communication means allow control of the UAV at a distance of up to 90 km. The operator can also transmit information to a higher headquarters or direct consumers.

High potential

The Albatros M5 reconnaissance UAVs entered combat units more than a year ago and have since become quite widespread. During their use in combat zones, they have confirmed their design characteristics and earned high marks.

It is reported that the Albatros M5 is easy to operate. The unmanned system can be transported in disassembled form by any suitable transport, and preparation for use takes minimal time. Training the UAV operator is not difficult, and he does not require special skills.

The drone has a successful design, due to which an advantageous combination of technical and operational characteristics has been achieved. The flight speed is limited, but the device is capable of staying in the air for several hours. It can move away from the launch site for a considerable distance and conduct reconnaissance at tactical depth.

Testing of a pneumatic catapult

"Albatros M5" is capable of carrying a significant payload. It is proposed to use various types of OES, including models with gyrostabilization, high magnification and FullHD resolution. This allows for increased efficiency of reconnaissance and fire adjustment.

As reported, the M5 UAV is mainly used in the interests of missile troops and artillery. It is easy to see that the range of the drone significantly exceeds the firing range of the main domestic barrel and rocket systems. This gives the Albatross the ability to effectively assist almost any artillery units, regardless of the type of their weapons.

In its characteristics and main capabilities, the Albatros M5 is similar to some other domestic reconnaissance UAVs, including more widespread and common ones. The presence of several devices with similar parameters in service provides some advantages of both operational and tactical nature. In addition, this creates competition between various manufacturing companies, which should stimulate further development of the industry.

Extended capabilities

Russian industry is actively working on new UAVs of all main classes, including reconnaissance products. Last year alone, the army received several such models, and one of them was the Albatros M5 from the company of the same name.

Over the past time, this UAV has confirmed its calculated characteristics and demonstrated high efficiency in performing reconnaissance tasks. It has become an excellent addition to other unmanned systems and is actively used in various areas of the front. It is expected that the positive experience gained will contribute to the continuation of production and an increase in the number of Albatrosses in the troops.

This allows for increased efficiency of reconnaissance and fire adjustment.

Well, let's start from the beginning once again. This phrase shows a complete lack of understanding of the peculiarities of modern warfare (MW) and the role of UAVs in it. The General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces lacks an understanding of the peculiarities of MW, and there is no point in even dreaming about modern combat tactics. We fight the old-fashioned way and try to stick UAVs in there. Last century's contact combat and mini-drones are raining down on your head...
What is intelligence in the Ground Forces, how has its role changed, and can it be called intelligence at all?
About which fire adjustment could we be talking about SV?
We have "army of yesterday", as Putin said, but with a new look!!!

What kind of fire adjustment can we talk about in the SV?

About the one that reduces ammunition consumption by a quarter.

Maybe you are talking about the fields sown with shells in the SVO? Well, the SVO is not a SV by any criteria! And it is conducted using outdated methods of the past. Higher (undershoot), lower (overshoot), to the left or right by so much... Right? That's yesterday...

So, by all criteria, SVO is not SV!

Then what is the point of this speech? "Albatross" is being developed for the SVO, and not for the wonderful wars of the future.

The wars of the future began at the end of the twentieth century...
Are you going to continue fighting the old way? With huge losses, with close combat, with shooting at squares, with your cities being reduced to dust, and advancing a meter a day? Are you happy with this? Will it continue like this? And won't the money run out? But it could have been done differently a long time ago...
Albatross is not suitable even for SVO! Low payload weight, short flight duration, impossibility of target designation for precision ammunition! There is not even a laser rangefinder...

Are you going to continue fighting in the old way?

I am discussing a specific article, a piece of weapon, and an army.
As I understand it, your criticism has nothing to do with the Albatros M5 UAV?

But it is perfect for reports and cuts.
How many of them were produced? As many as two? Or maybe even three?

Maybe you will then explain these "peculiarities of modern warfare"? Otherwise it looks like criticism. And do you really see a lot of contact combat in the current war? Most of the enemy fighters have never even seen them, watch interviews and video reports from there.

Everything has long been stated. Back in 2000, by order of Putin, the development of the ESU TZ "Sozvezdie-M" began, which successfully failed. Then the ACS "Andromeda-D" was created for the Airborne Forces, which is also useless and is not used. Now a new ACS "Kassiopeia-D" is being created, and the result will be the same. In addition to the American approaches to creating network-centric systems, there may be others. The General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces has no idea about the Ground Forces and does not develop the information component, without which the creation of such systems is impossible. They understand the ACS as a system for accounting and control of their troops and want to see everything, sitting in a warm chair in Moscow. But what does the Ground Forces have to do with it? And it is impossible to present new approaches here in the open press.

For the last 20 years, the ACS has been developed for the concept of network-centric warfare, which has not taken off. Too complex, too expensive, too vulnerable to the enemy's electronic warfare, its SIGINT and ELINT systems. This has happened not only to us, remember the fate of the American program (FCS) - and this with their satellite and digital communications capabilities.
The current war has shown what, in my opinion, the modern RMA (revolution in military affairs) really consists of. The spread of relatively cheap-to-produce UAVs and other autonomous systems, coupled with the development of photo and video equipment, the emergence of broadband closed, protected, long-range digital radio communications, and the development of materials science have allowed the conflicting parties to create a network of reconnaissance and strike UAVs, which have made it possible to achieve such situational awareness that many commanders of the past could not dream of. As a result, the enemy's maneuver is constrained, logistics in the near rear are maximally hampered (up to 10-15 km from the LBS), and the possibilities for concentrating and echeloning troops are limited. The result is a positional war of the WW1 type and an arms race (rapid development of autonomous systems, portable electronic warfare systems, new radio direction finding systems, etc.), when the maximum possible breakthrough is 20-30 km at a time (Kursk offensive operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Avdeevka-Ocheretinsk offensive operation of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Kharkov counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Lisichansk-Severodonetsk offensive operation of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, etc.) under the condition of prohibitively large expenditures of material and human resources. A striking illustration of a positional deadlock is the Bakhmut meat grinder, which cost both sides about 40000 killed. Do you think that this war is not modern? And the way out of this situation is not in the total automation of troop control (which neither we nor the enemy can afford), but in the development of air defense systems, electronic warfare, ensuring high-speed digital interference-proof and secure communications, achieving a state in which we could close our immediate rear from enemy UAVs while maintaining our own situational awareness of his rear and troops.

which made it possible to achieve a level of situational awareness that many military leaders of the past could not have dreamed of.

Are you talking about the war in Iraq? We won't have such awareness for another twenty years, given the best of circumstances. There are no achievements, and even at the tactical level, UAVs are used ineffectively. We haven't created the conditions for using the UAVs that we have. We don't have high-resolution space reconnaissance in real time, we don't have information transmission channels for long-range UAVs, we don't have reconnaissance aircraft... We don't have an information field at all... Where did you see SV? What can a backward war show? A close combat and drones raining down on your head?
Much can be done now in the SVO, and the methods are known, but who needs it? There are new approaches better than the American ones...

No, I'm not talking about the war in Iraq, I'm talking about this war, where hundreds of simultaneously operating drones from both sides illuminate the entire rear 15 km deep, when both sides immediately become aware of the enemy's actions and plans. Didn't you read my comment?
And no one has a concept for using UAVs, because their new role in war has not yet been theoretically understood. And I repeat once again, where did you see a contact war, when the fighters for the most part do not see the enemy for half a year, and 90% of all wounds are shrapnel?

The near rear is 100 km and further. Our MLRS "Tornado-S" shoots at 120 km. Who will light it? Our SPG "Koalitsiya-SV" can shoot up to 30 km and with precision ammunition. Who will light it? What are you talking about? Light a little further than binoculars? This is not even yesterday, but the day before yesterday!

I wonder why the biplane-triplane design is not used in reconnaissance UAVs? High lift, with the same/smaller wing span. Lighter design compared to an aircraft with the same wingspan in a monoplane, since no structural strengthening of the wing is required. I found only a Chinese version on the Internet (similar to the one in this article if "doubled"). It seems to me that a biplane could carry more fuel/payload, low speeds (aerodynamics will not suffer), visibility with a doubled wingspan will also almost not increase - solid advantages! Maybe the only thing is that it will be more difficult to assemble, but why waste time on assembling/disassembling, can't you just come up with a bulky case and that's it?
