"They can withstand a direct missile hit": Britain purchased gabions for the Ukrainian Armed Forces

The UK Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with local company DIRICKX Systems to supply gabions – steel-reinforced baskets filled with loose (such as earth or sand) or granular material – to the Ukrainian army.

This will be a response to Russian attacks on military targets, assets and critical national infrastructure. The equipment purchased is intended to provide protection against these attacks.

- says the publication Army Technology.

Gabions are widely used by the armies of NATO countries actively participating in armed conflicts abroad, for example, when creating a protective perimeter of military bases. Therefore, they received the designation "expeditionary barriers".

They are designed to protect against a wide range of threats and can withstand explosions, collisions with enemy equipment and even direct hits. missiles

- indicated in the publication.

As noted, gabions are packed in flat packs for optimal logistical efficiency and are easy to assemble into positions:

They can be built with minimal effort in less than 20 minutes.

The contractor produces gabions with a height of 0,61 to 2,74 meters.

They are designed to meet the highest standards of troop protection during the construction of operational bases and fortifications.

- declare in the company.

Will withstand a direct missile hit

Do they know that the missiles fly through the air and come from above, no? Or are they suggesting that we hide inside these coffins under a ton of sand?

Apparently so. And what's convenient is that you'll have a grave right away and won't have to fill it in.

The Pindos have been using such protective structures since the 60s. A relatively effective thing, especially considering the cheapness and speed of the device. At the end of last year, Forbes wrote about the Americans delivering them to the outskirts. Now the English have decided to support the local manufacturer.

Msi. I wouldn't say so categorically, 404 - it's the same as digging a sea or building a pyramid! Take more, throw furtherhi laughing

Well, in this case it just looks like the English are sawing off the money allocated for the outskirts. The Army Technology article says it right there - Despite repeated calls from the Ukrainian government to do more to enhance its missile interception capabilities, these zinc-aluminum coated steel and natural material filled devices provide a simple, effective and reliable solution to protect ground targets, Yes

The high explosive effect of the same FAB-250 is twenty meters. Fragmentation - hundreds of meters. Not all objects can be buried in the ground. But you can protect them this way. Throwing bombs at intervals of 20-30 meters - you have to try. And not all of them "hit the window". In fact, it is a necessary and quite effective thing. If at Stalingrad they built protective breastworks from frozen corpses.

Yeah, I see. And what about the Ukrainians who are spending the money? Let them dig up the corpses of their dead sons and cover the power stations with them. What do you think of the idea?

If you get hit by a MLRS salvo, you'll be glad to hide in a crack behind a stack of concrete slabs prepared for the construction of a public toilet.

If you just throw cast iron, then yes. But if you use UMPK, then these improved sandbags will be of no use.

Really? Do Kalibrs and Geranis also fly from above at a right angle? As if our main missile fleet isn't Iskanders and Kinzhals.

Calibers and Geraniums also fly from above

Well, yes, they make a hill and dive at the target.
        https://rg.ru/2022/10/10/opublikovany-kadry-effektnogo-pikirovaniia-rakety-na-cel-v-kieve.html
Its flight occurs at an altitude of 50 to 150 meters, when approaching the target, the missile can perform a so-called "hill", just like in the published video. In front of the target, usually a ground one, the missile soars upward and dives vertically at the object, reaching maximum speed upon impact.

Oh really? Do Calibers and Geraniums also fly in from above at a right angle?

Even if they were to fly in at an angle along a downward trajectory, such gabions can only protect a very small area and the same small height. To protect a building of a large area and several stories high, gabions approximately three times higher than this building are needed. I can't say more precisely (geometry will help you).

So this crap will protect Ukrainian objects horizontally at most. Apparently, British scientists believe that Russian missiles fly direct fire, without trajectories. laughing

Let them hide behind these gabions. It will be easier for bombs, mines and drones to find their targets in certain squares. The entire unit will be in place and will not scatter.

Thermobaric charges are deeply placed on the heights of gabions and their presence. The presence of a vacuum is guaranteed at any location in gabions

I have a question, is the filling of gabions of English origin the same price as a gold ore vein?

In our village, one guy watched the Internet and made a fence out of these gabions. The price is five times higher than a brick one. Cobblestone, boxes made of mesh like masonry - stainless steel... I saw this designer miracle in person for the first time - well, I would say, it's an acquired taste... I understand that when something is expensive and impressive in quality - you can overpay. And this...
At one time I thought about them in terms of temporary fencing on sites with expanded clay filling. I rejected them in favor of traditional FBS-"troikas".

Judging by the photo, this thing is needed to build a wall. But these boxes need to be filled with something, for example, earth, we are not in the desert. And if you fill them with earth, then it turns out you need to dig a trench. And if you still dig a trench, then what is this thing for?

Ah, well, great. Now the buildings won't fly apart hundreds of meters - the debris will simply neatly self-fold inside the gabion fence.
