Making the Navy Greener: Rolls-Royce Modifies MTU Engines for Frigates and Corvettes

The British-based Rolls-Royce concern, which manufactures MTU engines, intends to reduce emissions from the operation of the power plants it produces for civil and military offshore platforms.

The manufacturer began offering customers MTU engines of the 1163 and 8000 series in the power range from 4800 to 10000 kW with the SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system. They operate on environmentally friendly fuels, in particular, of biological origin, created from animal fats and vegetable oils.

We now make large MTU engines that meet environmental safety standards while maintaining the same specific power, efficiency and economy.

- stated in the company.

The power units are equipped with a new exhaust gas aftertreatment system, the main component of which is SCR. It has reduced nitrogen oxide emissions by 75%.

Test results show significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, as well as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter

- noted in the company.

As indicated, the modified engines, when installed on frigates and corvettes, will make it possible to fleet environmentally friendly.

I will suggest another way to increase "ecological friendliness" - put your military fleet on hold and do not let it out to sea... This is 100% ecological friendliness... .

Well, now Rolls-Royce has become infected with this green disease...
Some people may differ, but I think that cost-effectiveness for military equipment is in 15th place, and environmental friendliness is in 115th place. In first place is efficiency.

Remember the Soviet 375th "Ural". They joked that warrant officers with fuel and lubricants took part in the development of the engine - and that's how the "liter-kilometer" gasoline turned out. But what a phenomenal cross-country ability! At least in the army in the mountains, at least in civilian life for fishing on the last ice, in the spring "porridge". What ecology, what savings? The car is military.

And now the Westerners will go "in the wrong direction" with this environmental agenda and instead of a corvette we will get a pleasure yacht.

to begin with, remove the weapons and ammunition, remove the personnel that serviced all of this, so the ships will become lighter and consume less fuel - the first step towards ecology!

The new is the well-forgotten old. Let them return to sailboats.
But according to the modern and fashionable idea of today, wind generators should be installed and the hull should be covered with solar panels, and let the boat roll along the waves at a quiet speed.

Let them return to the sailboats.

The problem with small-scale marine engines is not ecology, but the cooling system! Their vessels only sail in northern latitudes, in warm seas they overheat and break down. laughing Let them improve the tuning even more wassat

    Well done.
Let them continue to develop and set the tone in their field.

    Too shy to ask...
    Even if "Zircon" hits them?!

No. The move didn't get to these.
China bought Volvo (trucks) and Hamer, GM and MG a little bit.

In 1980, the British defense company Vickers bought Rolls-Royce Motors Limited (from damn Wiki)

Perhaps there is another chain here, an automobile one.? England sold a car manufacturing company to a European company, and the Chinese acquired a large block of shares in a European company that had already absorbed the English auto industry. And this was already in the 2000s. hi

You're worried about the wrong thing, make your nuclear weapons environmentally friendly.

    They're suffering from crap.
Any "exhaust" from a volcanic eruption, practically any, covers up the "non-ecological" nature of the Navy's ships with harmfulness, like a bull covers up a sheep.
When hundreds and thousands of hectares of forest and peat bogs are burning, there is no need to talk about "green" internal combustion engines, because all this is money thrown away for the glory of PR and marketing.

The latrine also needs to be adapted for methane extraction and waste processing. Otherwise, the Saxons have already polluted all the seas.

Of course, we can talk a lot about their stupidity, dullness, idiocy, but explain to me why, given their stupidity, their engines, be they diesel or turbine, are better, faster, and more powerful... so we are smart, but they are not?

No - they are smart, and we are not, but they didn't ask to touch us and all that and in that spirit, but for some reason, in order to be super smart, they have to stick their noses in everywhere where they weren't asked? Or did you ask? winked
