Experienced tank T-34-100

Despite the fact that already at the end of the war, work was being done on the Soviet average a tank the next generation T-44, attempts quickly and at minimal cost to get an effective tank destroyer armed with a 100 mm cannon continued. Nevertheless, the shortcomings of the SU-100, which at that time was the most effective tank destroyer in the arsenal of the Soviet Army, related to the location of the gun in a fixed wheelhouse, did not disappear.

This work began in July of 1944 with the task of installing the 100-mm cannon in the standard T-34-85 turret, which received two design bureaus at once: Design Bureau No. 9 and 520 department of Plant No. 183. But literally the first estimations showed that the standard turret epaulette of the serial T-34 with a diameter of 1600 mm is not enough for this.

However, the designers of the Gorky design bureau No. 92, headed by A. Savin, nevertheless managed to quite correctly install the 100 mm ZIS-100 cannon into the T-34-85 turret. The ZIS-100 gun was developed based on the ZIS-S-85 serial 53-mm gun. But the tests of the T-34-100 with this instrument disappointed. The return of this powerful weapon was so great that the transmission and chassis of the T-34-85 could not be maintained. An attempt to solve the problem by installing a slit muzzle brake did not help. It took a radical rework of these nodes, and this is almost a new machine.

At this time, the design of the T-183В (the future T-44) was in full swing at this plant, and he proposed to install a ready-made tower from a promising tank on the T-54. True, the diameters of the shoulder straps of the T-34 turret and the new tank, though not significantly, differed, the 34 had a T-1600 mm, and the turret was designed for a shoulder strap in a 34 mm - from the T-1700В. This problem was solved by some processing of the body of the serial machine. These changes consisted in taking out a machine gun, and due to this, the crew was reduced by one person, the thickness of the bottom and roof over the engine was reduced, the controls were transferred to the fuel tanks, the driver’s seat, 44 suspension and 2- had to be lowered The support rollers are made in the same way as the suspension of the first rollers, five-wheel drive wheels are installed. In this form, this machine has received the designation T-3-34. The mass of the new tank has risen to 100 t.

In February - March 1945, this machine was tested at the Sverdlovsk and Gorokhovetsky landfills. And in the course of testing in T-354-100 two different guns were installed at once - the ZIS-100 and the D-10, which was used from the Design Bureau No. 9. During the tests, it turned out that the accuracy of fire was low, and the load on the transmission during the shot, although it had noticeably decreased, but it was still excessively large. But despite this, the tank liked the military and they demanded the continuation of work on it. But it was not possible to quickly eliminate these seemingly minor flaws.

At the end of 1944, a new 92-mm gun LB-100 was designed in the design bureau of plant No. 1 in Gorky, which had a markedly lower return. Naturally, this gun was also tried to be installed on the T-34-100 being developed. On the device, the gun LB-1 was identical to the D-10. The barrel of the gun consisted of a monoblock pipe, screw breech and a muzzle brake of the same design as that of the ZIS-100. Because of this, the length of the tank along with the cannon grew to 9150 mm, since the barrel of the gun on the 3340 mm went beyond the dimensions of the car, which had a very bad effect on the tank’s permeability.

But nevertheless, 6 by 14 on April 1945, at the Gorokhovetsky testing ground, were tested by a T-34-100 tank with an LB-1 gun. During the test, 1000 shots were fired and 501 km passed. The rate of the LB-1 is 5,2 - 5,8 rds / min. The accuracy of shooting at the new gun was higher than that of the predecessors, and the load on the undercarriage and transmission is noticeably lower. The machine is completely superior to previous versions of the tank T-34-100.

The selection committee concluded that “after the elimination of the identified deficiencies, the gun can be recommended for use”. However, despite the great interest of the military to the T-34-100 tank, its mass production was never launched. The war was coming to an end, and T-44, surpassing T-34-100, was at the exit. The meaning of the production of this machine just disappeared.

Could such a machine be launched into a series? Completely, if at once on the tests it showed itself as in the spring of 1945. And so the elimination of deficiencies, just dragged on.
