Recall 13 years ago, February 29 2000, in Chechnya in the Argun gorge near Ulus-Kert and Selmentauzen on Mount Istykord, there was a battle with the superior forces of the militants, in which almost all the 6 company and part of the 4 company 104 died of the 10th Parachute Regiment of the 76 Airborne Division.
The first clash occurred in 10.30 at the checkpoint 3 pdr (mark on the ascent of the mountain Istkord 666.0). Then, in 12.30, the reconnaissance group 6 of the paratrooper company discovered the militants ’advanced patrol and entered into a firefight, after which it was forced to withdraw to the main positions of the company, which had not even reached the height of 776.0. After that, at about 16.00, the battle started already on the approaches to the main positions of the company, and the soldiers, who were just rising to the height, had to join the battle directly from the march.
At the same time, February 29, a new commander of the 6 Guard Company, Major Sergei Molodov, was wounded and then killed. The battle control remained on the commander of the 2 th battalion of the guard lieutenant colonel Mark Evtyuhin.
Note that the 6-I company entered its last battle only a few hours after Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev reported to Vladimir Putin about the “implementation of the third phase of the operation” in the North Caucasus in connection with the capture of Shatoi. In fact, he announced that the main phase of the war was over.
Meanwhile, by the end of the day, the 6 Company lost the dead 31 man (33% to the total number of personnel). On the morning of March 1, a group of soldiers from 6, a man from the 15 company headed by Major Alexander Destalov, who left the defensive lines of his company at the next height and came to the aid of his comrades, managed to break through the position of the 4 Company. Soldiers of the 1 Company of the 1 Battalion sought to help their comrades. However, during the crossing of the river Abazulgol, they were ambushed and forced to gain a foothold on the bank. Only in the morning of March 3, the 1-I company managed to break through to the positions of the 6-th company.
By the morning of March 1, almost all the paratroopers were killed in battle, hand-to-hand combat had already begun on the approaches to the positions, and then Lieutenant Colonel Mark Evtyukhin and the artillery spotter Captain Viktor Romanov summoned an artillery fire on themselves.
In that battle, killed 84 Pskov paratrooper. Only 6 managed to survive. For courage and heroism shown in fights with terrorists, 22 paratroopers were awarded the title Hero of Russia, of which 21 was posthumous. 68 soldiers and officers were awarded the Order of Courage, 63 of them - posthumously.
