Armored car "Typhoon-Defense»

A special armored vehicle, the K-4386-PVO or "Typhoon-PVO", was created for the air defense units. Its purpose is to transport crews of portable anti-aircraft missile complexes together with weapons and ensure the implementation of combat missions. The new armored car is currently being tested. After their successful completion, it will be put into service and will help increase the potential of military air defense.

Perspective sample

The armored vehicle "Typhoon-PVO" was developed in the second half of the tenth years by the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant "Kupol". The relative simplicity of the project allowed the development process to be accelerated, and by the end of the decade the armored vehicle was ready for testing.

For the first time, the K-4386-PVO product was presented at the 2019 Army Games. The following year, the armored car was shown at the open part of the exhibition at the Army 2020 forum, and on May 9, 2021, it took part in the parade on Red Square for the first time. Since the end of the last decade, armored vehicles have regularly participated in various ground forces exercises.

At the beginning of 2021, it was reported that the Kupol IEMZ completed development work and handed over a new armored vehicle for testing. At the same time, the first work began to prepare for future mass production.

In 2022–2023 There have been repeated reports of the use of Typhoon-Air Defense in the area of the Special Operation to protect Donbass. These vehicles accompany our troops and provide them with protection from air attacks.

"Typhoon-Air Defense" (in the foreground) and "Typhoon-VDV"

As far as we know, testing of an armored car for air defense is still ongoing. State tests are currently underway, the completion of which is expected in the coming months. Based on the results of these events, Typhoon-Air Defense will enter service, and serial equipment will be sent to the troops.

The new K-4386-PVO armored vehicle is designed for military air defense units using man-portable anti-aircraft missile systems. Currently, such units use cars of current models, which may impose certain restrictions. A specialized armored vehicle will improve the capabilities of anti-aircraft gunners.

On a ready basis

"Typhoon-Air Defense" is built on the basis of the K-4386 "Typhoon-VDV" armored vehicle. This is a two-axle armored combat vehicle designed to transport personnel and some cargo. The basic armored car retained the main structural elements, but received new equipment for the internal compartments, corresponding to the needs of the air defense unit.

The armored car has a protected hood-mounted body with a large cargo-passenger compartment. Combined armor protection made of steel sheets and ceramic elements is provided. The crew and units are protected from armor-piercing incendiary bullets of normal caliber. There is also mine protection that protects people from the explosion of 8 kg of TNT under the wheel or bottom.

The armored car is equipped with a 350 hp diesel engine, an all-wheel drive transmission and is capable of reaching speeds of more than 100 km/h on the highway. The power reserve is 800 km. The vehicle overcomes various obstacles and can cross water obstacles through fords up to 1,2-1,5 m deep.

The Typhoon project was initially created using foreign units, but now the development company is actively working on its modernization and replacement of imported components. The Typhoon-VDV platform will also undergo similar import substitution.

Machine gun mount close up

In the Typhoon-Air Defense project, the internal equipment of the cabin was redesigned. The number of crew seats was reduced from 8 to 5, and the vacated volumes in the stern were given over to the placement of anti-aircraft gunners' ammunition and special equipment.

The crew of the K-4386-air defense includes a commander, a driver, two anti-aircraft gunners and a machine gunner. At the commander’s workplace there is a remote control with the function of receiving and processing data from higher command posts and target designation equipment. Having received information from the outside, the commander gives orders to the shooters.

During the exercises, independent monitoring of the situation and search for targets were practiced. For this purpose, the standard equipment of the armored car was supplemented with the 1L122 Garmon portable radar station. It is capable of detecting air targets at ranges of up to 40 km and altitudes of 10 km, determining their coordinates and nationality, and also providing information to the commander’s terminal.

The main armament of the Typhoon-PVO anti-aircraft gunner combat vehicle is domestically produced MANPADS, such as Igla or Verba. An ammunition load of 8-9 such complexes is transported in the aft compartment of the hull.

Having received data from the commander, the anti-aircraft gunner uses his MANPADS. Shooting is possible both after dismounting and through hatches in the roof of the hull. The presence of two shooters on board allows you to simultaneously attack two targets or carry out a paired launch on one object.

As a means of self-defense or an additional anti-aircraft weapon, the armored car carries a large-caliber Kord machine gun, which is mounted on the top turret and provides all-round fire at large elevation angles.

To improve air defense

Serial "Typhoons-air defense" will be supplied to military air defense units of the ground forces, in which they will replace existing vehicles. This technology will provide units with new capabilities and improve their potential.

The main advantage of the new armored car is that it was designed specifically for the needs of anti-aircraft gunners. The vehicle is equipped with instruments for data exchange and control, can carry its own detection equipment and has space for placing MANPADS.

"Typhoon-Air Defense" compares favorably with the transport currently used by the presence of protection. The crew, equipment and weapons are protected from bullets, shrapnel and explosions. This is especially important when anti-aircraft gunners are working on the front line or near the rear.

The decisive role is played by special equipment designed for K-4386-air defense. With its help, the combat vehicle is fully integrated into the air defense control circuits, ensuring the highest possible speed and efficiency of combat work.

The armored car carries two types of weapons. The main weapons against air targets are the Igla or Verba MANPADS. With their help, the Typhoon-PVO crew can attack airplanes, helicopters and some types drones at ranges of more than 6–6,5 km and altitudes up to 4–4,5 km.

The installation with the Kord heavy machine gun was initially considered as a means of self-defense. But during the exercises it was found that a trained crew can effectively use a machine gun against air targets.

The machine gun allows you to hit small and medium-sized drones at ranges of up to 1–1,5 km, depending on various factors. It demonstrates high effectiveness against targets that cannot be hit by portable air defense systems or are not practical for economic reasons.

Soon

"Typhoon-PVO" can be considered as a universal short-range anti-aircraft system equipped with guided missiles and a barrel artilleryIt has its own means of detecting targets and can interact with other air defense components.

A specialized armored vehicle designed for anti-aircraft gunners has significant advantages over conventional vehicles and is of interest to ground forces. Currently, it is undergoing final tests, based on the results of which a decision will be made on its adoption.

It is not yet known when the corresponding order will be issued and serial equipment will begin to enter the troops. However, it is clear that this is a matter for the near future. It is also obvious that the appearance of new vehicles in the army will have positive consequences.

That is, this is just a vehicle for calculating MANPADS, albeit armored and with a cord. The car is quite large, it will be spotted much faster than any buggy or ATV.

Is it okay that the anti-aircraft gunners now have standard vehicles - BTR-80s, motorized rifles and infantry fighting vehicles?

What's bad? the fact that the transport is unified with those parts that they are supposed to cover? really bad?

Well, for the sake of quantity, the site administrators don’t know that brevity is the sister of talent.

Did you just not notice that the kit includes a portable radar and equipment for coordination and control with other air defense units for the sake of a catchphrase about the pointlessness of the development?

Unfortunately, there is no radar there. sad
This is still more of a specialized transport, rather than an air defense system.

Plus, for some reason there is no armor protection or visor for the machine gunner, which makes him very vulnerable to everything.

There is no such radio station. And about the Garmon radar you can get publicly available data by request in a search engine. Work hard before you clog up the airwaves with nonsense

However, the MANPADS and radar set is still a weight that needs to be transported. Although the vehicle, except for the commander's console, has nothing special in its body. What did it take so long to test? A mystery. Maybe they just needed to make more money.

It's simply amazing how many "promising" models of automotive equipment are being developed, and all this despite the fact that there are no means of combating small-sized low-flying targets in development or production, and none are foreseen. And this latest "miracle of technology" as an air defense system is already obsolete at the design stage and is good only for parades.

It's some kind of bullshit! It's just dudes sitting inside and running out when needed. No guidance devices, automation, target selection or anything else. Some kind of hat from the distant past. It's scary what the money goes for. And it went into series, which means someone got well paid for “this”

Another project cut, when under the guise of new technology an old model is issued.
And it happened like this - in one kingdom-state there lived two good fellows - SK and VCh, and they decided to make an analogue of the Tiger for the Russian army, and what is there to be embarrassed about... everyone wants to eat... And it is done like this - everything imported is purchased - gearbox, engine, transfer case, axles and everything else is assembled on a frame ... and the army sends the whole gop-company into the forest... The good fellows are persistent and follow the beaten path of the Airborne Forces command, and oh miracle everything is fine - a contract for the supply of a pilot batch and money for R & D can be written off. Then the situation repeats itself - they go to the Air Defense Command and offer it the same thing - again R & D and profit, then they put a combat module with a 30-mm pukhai on the Typhoon - it doesn't matter that the shooting accuracy is terrible - it doesn't matter - again R & D budget funds. In general, the scheme is reliable as a clock - it works for decades, and everywhere where the glorious company ROSTEKH is.

My personal opinion is that this vehicle does not meet modern requirements for such short-range air defense systems. It should include: a rifle complex (spark Cordov, or better yet a 30mm cannon with remotely detonated shells), electronic warfare systems for individual and group protection with the ability to quickly change frequencies. Missiles with a range of about 10 km with the ability to work on the heat radiation of a target and on cold targets (UAVs with electric motors) - laser guidance was probably optimal here. Those. The optimal combat module is on the roof with a cannon and missiles. And a couple of shooters with MANPADS can be placed inside for reinforcement and self-coverage

a radar and a Gatling-type installation are enough, but the radar must catch from FPV to Western versions of the lancet, I think in many ways they will be happy with such an installation, well, if they add a box with short-range MANPADS it will be even better

It's not at all clear. Most likely the procedure will be delayed. According to military standards, all weapons and military equipment must be resistant to damaging factors of nuclear weapons. How are things going with this?

There is a more logical Gibka S.
Tiger with Flexible and a pair of “free shooters”? Which looks more logical against the backdrop of this misunderstanding Typhoon.

Flexible-S! Well, here you go. Place Bending on Typhoon and voila. By the way, the Garmon radar is also present. And this is 2016. Only there the complex was on the Tigris.

“The complex, in fact, is designed to destroy low-flying enemy targets, as evidenced by the shooting “ceiling” of 2000 meters. “Gibka-S” also does not boast of an amazing range - only 1-6 km. But the complex quickly detects the enemy: reaction time to the threat from the air is just over one second. The rate of fire of the complex is 3-4 rounds per minute. The designers emphasize that the Gibka-S will be able to hit any low-flying target moving at a speed of up to 400 m/sec.

The Garmon radar system is responsible for detecting enemy objects. The mobile station conducts circular monitoring of a certain air area (i.e. within a radius of 40 km). In any case, any object located at an altitude of over 10 km will not go unnoticed. Current terrain analysis is updated every 10 seconds. "

And most importantly, the Tiger is smaller than the Typhoon. Which means it's easier to disguise. Easier. Cheaper. Massoway. Etc. etc. and at the same time more functional.

The "Garmon" radar is an excellent target for anti-aircraft missiles. It is useless for a war with the Basmachi, as are the MANPADS, they have no aircraft, and against a high-tech enemy, detecting and destroying such a machine will not be difficult. We must ask the developers who they are going to fight against.

Question: how long does it take to do MRAP? "On a ready-made base, the Typhoon-Air Defense was built on the basis of the K-4386 Typhoon-Airborne armored vehicle"?

Answer: "Armored vehicle "Typhoon-PVO" was developed in the second half of the tenth years Izhevsk electromechanical plant "Kupol". The relative simplicity of the project allowed us to speed up the development process, and by the end of the decade the armored vehicle was ready for testing.

I don't know who formed the technical requirements for this armored car, but NO protection was developed for the machine gunner. And with the saturation of small arms and sniper weapons on any battlefield, he will be the first to be wounded or killed. Why? It is not clear (. Such a large and powerful "armored car", but there is no protection for the machine gunner, as a regular number of the combat crew (. In a modern combat environment, when the situation can change very quickly, a physically protected shooter of a large-caliber machine gun can save the life of the entire crew. But there have already been videos in which machine gunners firing from openly mounted machine guns were wounded first. And again, there is no protection (.

Would the author at least hint about the estimated cost of the proposed armored car?... Six or seven zeros in rubles? In the air defense units, I remember the GAZ-66 from the transport operation group pulled a ZU-23-2 or 14,5-mm ZPU-2(4) with a MANPADS crew on alert. And here there is a herd of horses of 350 heads under the hood and a power reserve from Moscow to Minsk with a reserve. Will the air defense unit itself keep up with the calculation of MANPADS, will it not lag behind? fool

First of all, the article does not consider the issue of using this complex, it was only briefly touched upon. Secondly, there is absolutely no protection against drones. In modern combat, as the SVO has shown, such complexes are immediately knocked out by drones. Hope for the Kulibins. And it seems that the factories themselves proposed the development. Without an assignment from the Ministry of Defense.
