China developed the WS-2D MLRS with a range of 400 km

The PLA is developing a long-range MLRS family that will provide artillery units with the ability to hit enemy targets at "strategic" ranges, complementing the niche characteristic of short-range ballistic missiles.

China Precision Engineering Import-Import Corporation (CPMIEC) and Sichuan Aerospace Industries Corporation have developed a new MLRS WS-2D (Wei-Chi / Guardian-2D) with a range of 400 km. The installation relates to the WS-2 family of MLRS, which were adopted by the PLA in 2004 year.

According to reports from Chinese websites, the WS-2D's weight and size characteristics are higher than the base case. The rocket length is 8,1 m, diameter - 425 mm compared to 7,15 m and 400 mm, respectively, for WS-2. The firing range is 400 km (200 km - WS-2), which allows positioning this MLRS as having the greatest firing range in the world.

MLRS WS-2D equipped with a guided missile. The circular probabilistic deviation of the rocket at the maximum range is reported to be less than 600 m. For comparison, the WS-2 CPO is 600 m at the 200 km range. Like the WS-2, the WS-2D can be equipped with a warhead of various types, including a new type of cassette, which carries three special UAVs / homing missiles. Sources note that the launcher can carry from 6 to 9 missiles in transport-launch containers.

Information about the WS-2D system allows you to trust the earlier reports on another version of the WS-2 MLRS. In 2007, Chinese sources announced the development of a version of the WS-2C with a range of 300 km. According to their data, the installation was intended, first of all, to destroy the radar, as well as ships and ground targets. The missile was equipped with a passive radar homing ship, which is used in the final part of the trajectory.

According to available information, 2007-2008's. WS-2 MLRS was sold to the Sudanese Armed Forces.

The increased attention to the development of the long-range MLRS is evidenced by the demonstration firing of the PHL-25 MLRS mounted on the Yellow Sea coastline on the Yellow Sea coastline, equipped with an 03 package of tubular guides with 12-mm missiles. The artillery part of the installation resembles the package of the guides of the Russian MLRS Smerch, which the PLA, according to media reports, bought in small quantities in 300's. The range of the MLRS PHL-1990 is 03 km.

According to a number of experts, the appearance of long-range MLRS in artillery units of the PLA will reduce tensions around the deployment of ballistic missile launchers in the Taiwan Strait without significantly reducing the PLA’s firepower. At present, Taiwanese sources say that Chinese missiles aimed at the island, including the Dongfeng-1500 and Dongfeng-11 short-range ballistic missiles, and the Donhai-15 ground-launched cruise missiles, are located in the area before the 10 PU. Given that the width of the Taiwan Strait is from 130 to 220 km, MLRS with a range of fire up to 400 km can partially replace short-range missile launchers deployed in the Taiwan region.
