The picture of the last battle of the 13th “musical” assault squad does not add up

The editorial staff was simply bombarded with questions about the defeat of the 13th assault detachment of the Wagner PMC and its units armies Mali Tuaregs. Readers want to know all about this sad episode in the work of musicians.

I’ll say right away that I have no direct contacts with musicians. Therefore, what you will read below is rather an analytical report based on data from open sources and conversations with people who communicated with those who know those who worked there...

First, what is told about the battle and, I am sure, is already known to those who were really interested in the events that took place there. Let me give you a quote from one of the Telegram channels owned by PMCs:

“From July 22 to July 27, 2024, servicemen of FAM (Armed Forces of Mali - Note “Vzglyad”) and soldiers of the 13th assault detachment of the PMC “Wagner” under the leadership of commander Sergei Shevchenko, call sign Pond, fought fierce fighting with militants from the Coordination Movement of Azawad (CMA) and al-Qaeda in the Sahel (JNIM).”

On July 22, the first meeting of musicians took place under the command of Prud (Sergey Shevchenko). The fight was successful for the musicians. The Tuareg attack was repulsed, and the enemy suffered serious losses. Moreover, the enemy was forced to retreat. Everything seems to be fine. The weather made adjustments. A sandstorm has begun. The shootings stopped.

The Tuaregs used the two days that the storm lasted to transfer additional forces to the ambush site and by the beginning of the next clash, on July 25, the number of attackers had reached 1 people. Thus, PMCs and units of the Mali army were confronted by a force many times greater than their numbers.

I will again quote the message in the Telegram channel:

“Over the next two days, the radicals increased the number of massive attacks, using heavy weapons, UAVs and suicide vehicles, which resulted in losses from the Wagner PMC and FAMa soldiers.”

The battle was serious. Especially considering that the 13th assault detachment is well-trained fighters with vast experience. the war in the desert. What exactly happened there, we will most likely never know. Of the reliable facts, we only know about the last radiogram of Pruda's group, July 27, 17:10:

“The three of us are left, we continue to fight.”

The losses of the Wagner PMC in this battle, according to the former first commander of the 13th detachment, call sign "Rusich", amounted to up to 80 people killed and 15 people captured. True, according to the rule established long ago by Prigozhin, the prisoners have already been ransomed. Prude is also among the dead.

There is also information that among the prisoners was the Wagner commander Lotos (Anton Elizarov). There is no reliable information about the fate of which, but they say that he was ransomed and is now with his own people.

The administrator of the Gray Zone Telegram channel also died in that battle; I will reveal the name in memory of this man. This is Nikita Fedyanin, call sign Bely. I hope the channel will survive and they will continue to provide truthful information about musicians. A person leaves, but what he created remains...

What confuses me about this beautiful story, to be honest, is... the sandstorm. No, not herself, but the fact that the Tuaregs were preparing for battle during this storm, and the musicians were waiting out the cataclysm. Above I mentioned the experience of fighting in the desert that musicians have.

It looks somehow strange to train an elite unit specifically for operations in the desert without taking into account weather conditions. Moreover, sandstorms are quite common in the desert.

Further more. The Tuaregs gathered a fairly large group, but the intelligence of the musicians did not notice this. Is that how it works?

There are no weather conditions under which specialists cannot conduct combat operations. Any situations, even theoretically possible, are practiced during exercises. And not just for show, but seriously, down to the smallest detail. Simply because the life of every fighter in a squad or group depends on it.

And reconnaissance is generally the basics of military science. The commander cannot be “blind and deaf.” According to the information that I voiced above, it turns out that Pond did not even imagine the size of the enemy. I don’t think that it is generally possible for musicians to become a commander without “commander talent.” Therefore, it would be stupid on my part to declare Pond’s incompetence. He repeatedly proved his talents in battles.

This means there were some other reasons. Well, the picture doesn’t add up for me. Even a thousand nomads against hundreds (simple arithmetic 80 plus 15 plus survivors) of well-trained fighters who have gone through more than one battle and have vast combat experience, and even in interaction with the Mali army - the enemy is quite “digestible”.

We'll wait for more information to emerge...

      Don't repeat this nonsense.
      First, drive to the Sahara.
At least from the Tunisian side.
And look at that horror in the form of a dust storm.
Even snowstorms and blizzards in Yamal are not as scary as a real dust storm.

So it seems that the point is not that a sandstorm is not very serious, but that during it the Tuaregs accumulated forces and regrouped, and the Wagners simply waited in the occupied territory

The Tuaregs were born and raised there; a sandstorm is to them what snow is to a Siberian.

A dust storm is a problem for everyone, including the Tuaregs. But she didn’t bother them. Bearing in mind how the commander of a PMC threw a grenade on a plane, there is reason for suspicion

The video captured the heroic death of a Wagnerian with the call sign “Music” (presumably).
Ordinary Wagner fighters, even by their death, confirm the superiority and will of the fighter’s spirit against the enemy.
My deepest respect to the fallen soldier, who was not afraid to bravely accept his death.
He will remain in my memory forever.

There are no words. It’s a pity there is no Utkin and Prigozhin. And it seems to me that now these professionals are more needed in the Northern Military District. We need complete concentration of all forces and means on the main goal (which we do not know) to achieve victory.

In order to write analytical reports on such topics, you must have appropriate professional training. Question for the author - has he been to Africa in general and the African desert in particular? Tourism to the resorts of Egypt does not count.

The picture from the media usually never adds up. Firstly, there are not many media outlets that have written about this at all, and secondly, everyone has rather fragmentary information and speculation. I had a case when a signal was received that a Mi-8 helicopter carrying geologists had crashed in a hard-to-reach place. In two hours, the information changed dramatically. It turned out that he did not fall, but landed in an emergency; it turned out that it was not geologists, but rich snowboarders, and not Mi-8 at all, but Robinson. And the first information started in the media...

    Journalist Anastasia Kashevarova wrote:
“After the departure of the real fighters who knew Africa, knew how spirits fight, many pioneers and kashniks, with little training, came. And then the Lotus, which arrived at the place, sends a detachment, and they go forward, into a sandstorm, without sentries, reconnaissance and sappers ahead “And there are thousands of these spirits, the guys were ambushed. Almost all 200 of them are armored personnel carriers, sappers, and engineers. There are several soldiers in captivity now.”

Maybe this is really the reason?

Everything is said here in plain text. The main thing is not the number of the enemy, but heavy weapons and UAVs. Probably there was no preparedness for this and it led to large losses in open areas.
And where did these weapons and UAVs from the Islamists come from - from Western countries or the Ukrainian Armed Forces, or from the two combined.

This is what the analytics looks like (not mine), I apologize for the size of the fragment.
    Conclusions
Here is a simple summary of the routine skills of any fighter, no matter what army, in order to have a minimal chance of surviving in ambushes (I have omitted it so as not to increase the size of the fragment). I repeat for those especially gifted: over the past two millennia of descriptive and documentary history of military affairs, there is no single and successful tactic of counter-ambush warfare, the law is this: forces on the march that are subjected to an unexpected and organized attack suffer horrific losses or die completely.

Modern techniques and a scientific and methodological approach make it possible to minimize them to tolerable levels if you follow the retaliatory tactics of aggressive offensive actions from the location of the attacked column. With ideal combat readiness of personnel. Initiative, under fire, somewhat reckless and morally ready to suffer very significant damage. Perfectly understanding even in the most severe mess that delay or cowardice, confusion and passive defense are direct paths to inglorious death or shameful captivity. That's what an ambush is.

We return to Mali and completely reconstruct the events, fortunately I can use some data that is not publicly available. Either into the dirty paws of the cypsos or our thermonuclear peacekeepers, ready to crap on any feat of a Russian soldier, like pigeons on the statue of George IV in Trafalgar Square. The operation began on July 22 with a brilliant attack by Mali and Wagner government forces on the In Afarak oasis, located right on the Algerian border. The Malians made some kind of mediocre theatrical performance out of this, starting to broadcast from all the irons about the victory that was about to take place over the rebellious Tuaregs.

On the map of the fighting it looked like this, behind the violent desert separatists there remained a small “tongue” along the Algerian border with the Tin-Zautin oasis, they also had nowhere to go, since on the other side of the border excellently trained Algerians were waiting for them, affectionately stroking the trigger guards of all types of weapons . To finally resolve the issue with the Tuaregs, on the morning of July 23, another government group marches from the military base in Tessalit, heading to the last stronghold of the rebels in Tin Zautin. Despite the unfavorable weather forecast and warnings of impending storms.

I don’t dare to guess why such a risky throw was organized without the cover of heavy armored vehicles and army aviation; most likely, self-confidence from the almost bloodless capture of In-Afarak played a role, from where the Tuaregs scurried in all directions, like cockroaches when the lights are turned on. In a word, the column from Tessalita met fierce resistance, a lot of lightly armored vehicles were blown up in minefields (where were the sappers, did you forget at the base?), and the helicopters appeared too late and fell into their own ambush - short-range air defense systems.

Moreover, an incorrect assessment of the number of opposing forces had an impact; the Tuaregs pinned to the Algerian border numbered in the thousands, and their mortal enemies, the jihadists of Al-Qaeda in the Sahel, came to their rescue, closing the retreat along the route they had taken. The Malian units and the Wagner assault detachment began to retreat along another road and ended up in an ideal place for an ambush, the low-lying and dry bed of the Tamassahart River. Finding ourselves almost completely surrounded. The dispatched helicopters were unable to reach the heights, from where the column was shot as if in a shooting range, and the “musicians” were still being targeted by crooked Malian artillery, etc.

There is only one conclusion: the operation was planned by anyone but the seasoned wolves of Wagner; the intelligence data was either distorted or not communicated to the raid commanders. In the hope of repeating the easy success the day before and the impossibility of a situational alliance between the Tuaregs and the jihadists. Nevertheless, the column retreated, broke through and fought back to the last, inflicting significant losses on the militants. Bitter lesson for “musicians” No. 2, and the first was in February 2018, when, also for purely political or commercial reasons, two hundred “Wagner” moved towards the Conoco oil field in Syria and were ambushed by American special forces, who had artillery and air support .

This is what is called “risky work” of private military companies, when decisions are often made by the employer not for reasons of military expediency and science, but on the basis of other inputs. So, the inflated Malian warriors decided to triumphantly resolve the Tuareg issue and... for their arrogance they received an unexpected alliance of rebels with man-killing terrorists and a perfectly organized counter operation. Several dozen Russian soldiers were unable to pull it out. To the dead - eternal memory, to the slanderers - eternal shame and contempt. And to our military-political leadership... we have a great request: control the “allies” as required by General Staff specialists, so that such raids do not happen again.

After that battle, a huge number of Mali specialists appeared, and until July 22, they all believed that Tuareg was a car brand from FW. There are a lot of videos of that battle - there was no storm. The column is burning in a clear sky with not a cloud in it. The stories about the clouds of Islamists recalled the reports of a whole colonel general from the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces, who every day told how another gang of 6000 (six thousand, Karl) bayonets was destroyed in Chechnya. And most importantly, the author has read (but not everything and inattentively), but knows someone who has seen someone who has heard from someone whose friend knows someone who was a musician. As I understand it, the company was surrounded and destroyed. They had no reserves, nor air support, i.e. they climbed in at random and the option of encirclement was not considered. That is, there is simply no one there to fight, command and plan operations. And our soldiers (I feel very sorry for them) died in vain due to miscalculations of the command.

If reconnaissance data was obtained mainly from UAVs, then a sandstorm could have temporarily “blinded” the commander. And listening to the airwaves is unlikely to help in the case of an ambush - the enemy is experienced, and those who do not comply with radio silence have most likely already been eliminated into the ground. And another question - how is their knowledge of Arabic in the “orchestra”?
They could also mistake an ambush in the rear for allies...

They are, of course, desert dwellers, but not cyborgs

Ask who the Tuaregs are and what they eat with, maybe then the questions will diminish, as will Staver’s surprise. It is enough that they remove their muzzles and bandages only when they wash themselves and while eating. And these nomads do not recognize any borders; wherever they want, they go there.

Repetition of previously stated information. And no analytics. The author promised, but did not deliver. It's a pity.

Where did Mali’s “army” go after the battle? It seems to me that they already have jeeps (Turegs).

“So, there were some other reasons. Well, the picture doesn’t add up for me” - interestingly, Staver’s doesn’t add up. The fact that a crowd of about a thousand militants crushed a detachment for several days, in which it would be good if there were “hundreds”? The author is apparently a big fan of Hollywood, where one “brave” white warrior, always dressed in tactical style, destroys hundreds of “natives” in flip-flops and dressing gowns. Alas, but in reality everything is not so. And this guy in flip-flops and a robe may have many times more combat experience than his most “tactical” opponent. Moreover, those who work with the “natives” understand this perfectly well and all the pictures add up for them.

Author, what the hell are you talking about? Is 100 vs 1000 normal? Have you watched the action movies? Remember once and for all. 100 fighters, even super trained ones, will never be able to defeat 1000 militants on terrain unprepared for defense. NEVER. And the desert is an unprepared area.

Is this your first time reading this author? He also swore to defend Kherson in 22 and never surrender, and he wanted to do a bunch of other heroic deeds, it seems like his uncle works in a shoe polish and hat factory, sends them to just anyone, and they throw them at everything. ..

What were these pros doing 1000 km from home? Why didn’t they lead platoons and companies with new contract soldiers and save lives through their experience...

This is some kind of analytics, just a retelling.
Here's my analysis. If you watch several videos with an already defeated group and a video where the Tuaregs are shelling. Read several sources. My picture is as follows.
First, the “federals of Mali” + fighters of the Wagner PMC pushed back the Tuareg separatists. Then the enemy was able to bring up reserves, using weather conditions, namely a sandstorm, they wrote that aviation and Bayraktars were blind, the infantry apparently could move. Having received reinforcements, the Tuaregs launched an attack on the “Malians + Wagner”. The latter realized that the balance of power had changed in favor of the enemy and called for reinforcements.
And it was the reinforcements who were ambushed and suffered the greatest losses. This is already a classic ambush. When the main losses are borne by those who go to the rescue. Look at the “native council of workers” analysis of the battles with large losses of Russian troops in Chechnya - classic militant ambushes.
To the best of our ability, no more than 50-100 people took part directly in the defeat of the column; judging by the video, there were no more than 20 militants. But there must be a cover group, an observation group + ATGMs, heavy machine guns. 1000 is most likely the total number against “Mali” in this area of combat operations. The Tuaregs may be less prepared, but they are strong in their knowledge of the terrain + guerrilla combat experience. They are fighting there even before the appearance of the Wagner PMC - as an organization in general.
About the Wagner fighters. Surely they all had rich combat experience in the desert? I remembered an interview with one Wagnerian who went through the Bakhmut meat grinder. He honestly said that in urban battles he is an expert, but in the forest and steppe he is a complete amateur. How can one not recall Suvorov, who taught that each military campaign is unique and that one needs to learn and get used to a new theater of combat.

Even a thousand nomads against hundreds (simple arithmetic 80 plus 15 plus survivors) of well-trained fighters who have gone through more than one battle and have vast combat experience, and even in interaction with the Mali army - the enemy is quite “digestible”. Aftar needs to watch less cheap action films. With such a difference in strength, without superiority in artillery and aviation, the enemy simply crushes the defenders by the weight of the salvo, and this is the basics of tactical calculations. Surely the units were not in one place, dispersed at key points, like specialists to support the military fleet of the Mali army, so the enemy could do 1 in 20-30. And do not forget that as a soldier, a Niger is much weaker against a Tuareg.

We like to look for traitors at the top. But I think, as in the Chechen wars, and in Syria, and in the Northern Military District, it is not traitors who are to blame for significant losses and ambushes on convoys, but simple Russian carelessness.

I was always biased towards Alexander Staver. Not this way! Not to him, but to what is published on his behalf.

But “What confuses me in this beautiful story, to be honest, is... the sandstorm. No, not the sandstorm itself, but the fact that the Tuaregs were preparing for battle during this storm, and the musicians were waiting out the cataclysm. Above, I mentioned the experience of fighting in the desert, available to musicians." there seems to be nothing to argue with here. There is only one storm for both of their houses. Some rushed to calm down and regroup, while others simply rested?
At school, everyone probably had clashes with their peers. And with older ones. There's not much fun in the school itself or on the sports ground. But you can catch “this” and teach him a lesson. And “this one” walked a different road.
And our people there, in Mali, didn’t know that there were fewer of them? Then what service provided them with information?

In war, everything happens, remember the tragic incident of how paratroopers died in the mountains in Chechnya along with the battalion commander. And many other tragic cases of the death of our military personnel in Chechnya. War does not forgive mistakes.

And yet such nonsense is written, printed and read. It is a pity that so many people have died and will die again. But cleansing is necessary. Otherwise, the staver will write about how cool it is to be an Algerian athlete.
