“Well-deserved retirement”: the Bundeswehr replaces the Wolf with a new car

Current Wolf model

The Bundeswehr has announced plans to purchase up to 5800 new light cross-country trucks with a permissible gross weight of 4,5 tons to replace the current Wolf model.

The first five cars are to be delivered to troops for testing in November this year. Serial deliveries are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 4, with 2025 vehicles to be produced in the Leuftwahrzeug (2028 units) and Feldjägerwahrzeug (1200 units) variants by 1105, valued at €90 million. Another 240 units, valued at €4600 billion, are to be delivered by 1,1.

The contractor will be Binz Automotive, which will equip Mercedes-Benz vehicles for the needs of the military. In particular, it is planned to install the D-LBO MTN-A3 kit (“mobile tactical node” equipped with radio stations) or D-LBO MTC-F4 (“mobile tactical client” with an information and communication system). It is quite possible that the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in the Station Wagon 4.5 version, presented last month at the Eurosatory exhibition, will be used as a base.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Station Wagon 4.5 version

The Wolf is used by the Bundeswehr everywhere, transporting personnel and equipment, performing reconnaissance missions and acting as command and communications vehicles. Since the 1990s, the German army uses a modification of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class: in total, more than 12 thousand cars of this model were produced.

The current version of Wolf, being the most famous and proven workhorse of the Bundeswehr, is going into a well-deserved retirement
