Homemade tool for complex tasks
PKZ machine gun.

This is what its creator himself, Andrei Malkov (call sign “Labi”), says about his creation.

“Several conditions were set in the technical specifications. One of them is that the machine gun must be carried hidden under the arm, covered with a raincoat. In the SVO, they try to hit the fighters with the “long black oar” first, that is, machine gunners and snipers. This immediately reduces the firepower and capabilities of the unit.”

Andrey Malkov with his brainchild.

The Perm design bureau "Labi" itself (also known as CJSC NPO "LABI"), judging by the available information, does not have a license for production (research, development, testing, manufacturing, as well as artistic decoration and repair weapons, production of cartridges and their components) weapons and cartridges, provided for by Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of July 21.07.1998, 814 No. XNUMX. Accordingly, Malkov himself does not have the right to modify the barrels of his creation, namely to shorten, remove mechanical sighting devices and install a mount for a collimator.

According to information available in open sources, the barrel was modified at the Russian University of Special Forces named after. V.V. Putin in Gudermes.

Infographics from the Izvestia publication with the characteristics of the PKZ machine gun.

The topic of bullpups based on PC/PKM/Pecheneg systems has been addressed more than once. It was always either something at the level of the creations of self-taught people, the Kulibins, or more than factory-made (for example, a bullpup from Kovrov specialists), but also produced in a fairly limited edition and for special forces.

In general, the idea of such a “modernization” of a machine gun for units in the Northern Military District zone, which most likely will have to perform not only assault missions, is actually controversial. From a single machine gun, that is, a universal machine gun, in fact, a highly specialized tool is obtained, which is either not so convenient for performing other tasks, or is simply not applicable.

Approach to a PC-bullpup projectile from residents of Saratov, Syria.

In addition, there are doubts that the machine gun will retain the same reliability that is inherent in the PK/PKM/Pecheneg family, since the barrel is greatly shortened, and the gas unit, apparently, has not been subjected to any modifications. How it will all work together, probably, only tests will show.

One small Picatinny rail in front of the receiver and the lack of mechanical sighting devices also raise questions and, again, make a highly specialized tool out of a universal machine gun. Plus, a short barrel with a powerful rifle cartridge means sheaves of sparks and flames, incomparable to PK/PKM/Pecheneg with standard barrels.

Kovrovsky bullpup of one of the special forces units. These machine guns did not become a mass phenomenon, and, probably, they could not have become. Still, this version of the Kalashnikov machine gun is tailored for quite specific tasks.

Yes, here the issue is most likely solved by “muzzle devices,” but they will hide almost the only advantage of this machine gun - compactness.

Even the light weight, which is presented as an advantage of a machine gun, can actually be a disadvantage, since during assault operations you will probably have to fire this weapon from your hands, and it is harder to control a lighter weapon with a powerful cartridge than a heavier one. That is, PKZ “operators” will most likely be subject to rather stringent requirements in terms of physical fitness and level of weapon proficiency.

Serial Kovrov version of the bullpup PC.

At the same time, the army has more compact machine guns with standard folding stocks - 6P41M (modernized PKP/Pecheneg). And there is even a more compact (shorter gas engine) 6P69 (“Pecheneg-SP”). Well, that is, as it is, 6P41M is produced, but, apparently, in homeopathic quantities, and 6P69 has been undergoing various tests for more than 10 years (!) and seems to be just planned for production, and so far it only shines in photos from a weapons blogger, made in Gudermes.

But, in general, now there are commercial kits for tuning machine guns, and the standard stock can be replaced with a folding one, simply by purchasing it from the same “Zenitka”, and the issue of camouflaging the “long black oar” is generally removed.

True, here we again return to the question, which was finally recently voiced at a high level and publicly; former Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin said at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum (SPBILF) that our fighters are forced to equip themselves at their own expense. But this is a topic for a separate and not very pleasant discussion.

Overall duel between “Pecheneg” and his Kovrov bullpup brother.

The main advantage and at the same time disadvantage of the PKZ is that it is actually not a new machine gun, but just another upgrade kit. Yes, the modernization is quite deep, with modifications being made to the standard machine gun barrel, but still. But there are no more machine guns in the army, the need for them is only growing, but the manufacturer remains the same for the whole country and all departments. That is, even if the PKZ passes the tests and finds its way to the front, machine guns will most likely have to be removed for such alterations.

The issue of an assault machine gun could be resolved by the adoption of a 5.45 caliber belt-fed system, but, as we wrote earlier, there seems to be progress in this direction, but it seems there is not, given that between the prototype and the “barrel” in the army – years or even a decade may pass.

The civilian weapon tuning market offers working options on how to make a machine gun more compact.

Be that as it may, one can only be glad that design ideas appear not only within the walls of respected and honored enterprises, and they even manage to be embodied in metal.

On the other hand, probably certain problems in the army’s small arms system became the reason for the emergence of such proactive developments. In any case, I would like to wish the author of the machine gun good luck and further successful design work.

6P69 could be the answer to the aspirations of everyone who wants a compact PC/PKM/Pecheneg here and now. But the machine gun has been tested for more than 10 years, and the troops do not have it. The photo was taken by the famous weapons blogger RAZVEDOS, and in the background we can see the beautiful nature of the Chechen Republic. The photo was taken near Gudermes at the Russian University of Special Forces named after V.V. Putin.

This is how I understand cutting... in the literal and other senses.

One of them is that the machine gun must be carried hidden under the arm, covered with a raincoat. In the SVO, they try to hit the fighters with the “long black oar” first, that is, machine gunners and snipers.

Now they will hit fighters wearing a raincoat... both in winter and summer in one raincoat... brilliant

This is just the beginning of a long journey. The next stage is a machine gun to be carried in a holster. We don’t have machine guns chambered for an intermediate cartridge with a belt feed and interchangeable barrels. There is indeed an RPK, an assault rifle on steroids, but it’s a stretch to look like a machine gun. If you don’t quibble with technical details, the RPK is a modern version of a handbrake from the thirties of the last century. The problem is the lack of modern ones machine guns are seen in the high cost and complexity of putting them into service. Over the past twenty to thirty years, our defense industry has suffered more than during the civil war and the Second World War combined, apparently there is no one and nothing to make modern weapons, so we are sawing off what we have.

The problem with the lack of modern machine guns is seen in the high cost and difficulty of putting them into service.

Modern machine guns do not appear because there is no such need. By the way, the Americans have the same thing, the M60 machine gun has been produced since 1957, the M240 has been in service since 1977 and also continues to be produced. Moreover, note that for the most part they are installed on all kinds of equipment. The infantry today does not have a need for a universal (single) machine gun capable of suppression fire at a distance of 1000 meters. BMPs or other armored vehicles shoot to suppress them.

But on the contrary, the need for powerful melee weapons has appeared! The PKZ is not at all like a classic machine gun. This is a melee assault weapon chambered for a powerful and penetrating cartridge, capable of piercing armor plates and parapets and trench corners in one go.. Of course, it does not need compact dimensions to be hidden in a pocket; assault weapons desperately require maximum agility for combat at close range, be it either urban conditions or the winding trenches of oporniks. I am afraid that the disdainful attitude expressed by the author is typical of many military personnel who do not understand the purpose of these weapons. It's a pity.

Assault tactics have been developed since WWI, and I have never seen any mention that attack aircraft needed PKZ-type weapons. Grenades, backpack flamethrowers, light small arms, yes, but machine guns, no. And now, according to the stories of the SVO participants, they take a lot of grenades and magazines; there is no talk of machine guns chambered for a rifle cartridge. I think a GM-94 would also be useful, but there seem to be very few of them.

However, the first MP-18 submachine gun appeared among German attack aircraft. And let me remind you once again that the PKZ is not a machine gun. The short barrel clearly reminds of this.

For such a cartridge (7.62x54) it’s not even enough; ordinary machine guns are made under 10 kg. On the other hand, where to go? There is nothing to pierce armored armor with except this cartridge now. But a fighter with good physics is desirable, of course. By the way, the PPSh with the drum weighed 5.3 kg, also quite a lot for those times.

True, they were destroyed among 15 million units. weapons chambered for 7,62x39 and 7,62x54 under President Medvedev. who is now listed in the Security Council and from time to time, having recovered from the frenzy, posts various nonsense :-)))

Actually, as I was taught in training, before the infantry moves forward, the enemy is exposed to fire by various means. After which you can go forward with a simple Kalashnikov. Whether a machine gun is good or not is decided in practical combat. Did this machine gun pass him? soldier

That is, we don’t do the standard (legal) things, people have nothing to fight with, there aren’t enough machine guns, but the fact that someone is trying to correct the situation is bad, it’s illegal, the managers from the concern are missing out on profits? Is this a custom article? Did the Kashnikovites pay? Even after August 8th, at the design bureau, we looked through almost all the videos from that war, we wanted to find at least one new product that we were shouting about so much, ours and supposedly purchased ones, but there was nothing!!! And now the Kalash concern produces all the same junk, but others can’t, they strangled the same Kovrovites, telling everyone that something in them doesn’t match! Suffice it to remember how recently a man laid asphalt in front of his house for his own money, and then he was fined, the asphalt was torn off, like he didn’t let everyone earn money along the chain, it’s better to live in the street! This is Russia, what can I say?

A concealed machine gun...that's something new. It would be better if this special forces institute made a pattern for a poncho-type cape with a hood, otherwise the soldiers put on unloading vests and body armor over camouflage suits, losing the point of camouflage.

As far as I understand, a machine gun is a machine gun, even in Africa, with its own tasks and purposes... Perhaps it can be reduced to the size of a pen, but what about its performance characteristics (accuracy, stopping power, "recoil", finally)??? With its main purpose in the offensive and defensive???? Maybe it makes sense to "dig" in the "storehouses of the motherland" and at various testing grounds, such as the Gudermes Russian University of Special Forces named after V.V. Putin... You look and you will find "something" for covert wear under a raincoat - tent...... And so, the "problematic" article looks like an "invitation" to participate in the "sawing up" of the next budget at the "request" from the theater of military operations... But! It is imperative to encourage any innovations, inventions in the defense of the country, albeit at a higher organizational, professional level, "bringing" them out of garages, "Young Army" circles and clubs of interest...

Any innovations, if they are not from the RF Ministry of Defense, in small arms fall under Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, so I think there will be few people willing to engage in these. There is no short-barreled market in Russia, and not everything is smooth on the hunting weapons market, there is no private owner interested in the production, design and sale of weapons, so where does it come from?

It's kind of strange to imagine a bullpup on a belt-fed machine gun. Our belts aren't dispersible. The belt moves between the shoulder and the cheek and the cartridges fly out? It's kind of strange. Bullpup machine guns are complete crap. I think the machine gun is the same.

Almost a year - SVU. At first it was unusual, but then it was normal.... Mainly because I had previously shot from a bear/tiger in civilian life. Although shell casings flying out of your face are certainly distracting, you also need to get used to it. But having such a habit is, yes, an obvious drawback. In terms of recharging there were no particular inconveniences. And the fact that you no longer have a full-size oar in your hands makes all the difference, especially in construction
