John Thomson (14 Jun 1837 - 29 September 1921) was the first Scottish photographer, geographer and traveler all rolled into one. He was one of the first photographers who traveled to the Far East, taking pictures of people, landscapes and objects of Oriental cultures. Returning home, he began working on the streets of London. He is considered the classic personality of public documentary photography, which formed the basis of modern photojournalism.
