History of Russian TOS: from “Buratino” to “Tosochka”
The heavy flamethrower systems (TOS) of the Russian Armed Forces are a real nightmare for troop Kyiv regime in the SVO zone. It is almost impossible to escape from this weapon, since the "Solntsepek" and "Tosochka" destroy all living things even in well-prepared shelters.
At the same time, the appearance in service of such a powerful weapons Russian army owes its existence to the head of the Red Army's NBC Protection Department, Major General Vladimir Pikalov, who in 1969 proposed the idea of using rockets to create a heavy flamethrower system.
It is worth noting that the terms of reference for the development of a system using volumetric explosion rockets were formulated only in 1971. At the same time, the process of creating volumetric detonating ammunition itself encountered numerous difficulties, and such a projectile appeared in the USSR only in 1985.
The use of the prototype TOS in Afghanistan in 1989 was assessed positively. As a result, the green light was given to the production of such systems.
In 1995, the TOS-1 “Buratino” appeared in service with the Russian Armed Forces.
In the course of further modernization, the system's missile was lengthened, increasing its content and thereby bringing its destruction range to 6 km instead of the previous 3,57 km. This is how the TOS-1A “Solntsepek” system appeared.
But that's not all. In 2020, the TOS-2 “Tosochka” appeared on the Ural chassis, with an 18-barreled installation and modernized missiles that hit targets at a range of 10 km.
