Today is the Day of Remembrance of the Russians, who performed their duty outside the Fatherland, was established only recently and is celebrated in Russia only for the third year. On this day, events dedicated to the anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan are traditionally held throughout the country, but this date received official status only in 2010. The new date was established not only in memory of the military exploits of the Afghan soldiers who did not return from that war, it is intended to become a single day of memory of all our compatriots who served the Motherland during the periods of participation in hostilities outside the country in different parts of the world. Over the years since the end of World War 68, a Russian soldier fought in Korea and Vietnam, Syria and Egypt, Mozambique, Ethiopia and Angola, in Hungary, in Bangladesh and Laos, in Afghanistan. According to historians, over the years in armed conflicts outside Russia took about one and a half million of our fellow citizens, 25 thousands of them did not return home.
This year, on the Day of Remembrance of the Russians who performed their duty outside the Fatherland, a symbolic event will take place in Moscow that has a deep spiritual meaning: the icon of Elijah the Prophet will be handed over from the hands of veterans-paratroopers of the Russian Orthodox Church of war.
The icon “Prophet Elijah of God -“ Afghan ”together with capsules of Afghan land brought from an expedition to the places of bloody battles will be solemnly brought to the Moscow temple of Elijah the Prophet - patron of the Airborne Forces on airborne Alexander Kucherenko Interfax.
In 2012, a group of veterans of the Airborne Forces who took part in the Afghan campaign, went through the places of combat glory of the Airborne Forces and special forces. The expedition visited the cities of Kunduz, Mazar-i-Sharif, Shebergan, Bagram, Kabul, Gordez, visited Chirikar Valley, Panjshir Gorge and the Salang Pass.
