“They tried to hack your personal account”: how scammers extort money from residents of the LPR and DPR and SVO participants

In the last few months, a form of telephone fraud has become extremely common in the republics of Donbass, and in the Northern Military District zone as a whole, when people receive calls from attackers who pretend to be “bank employees” and, under various pretexts, try to take over other people’s money.

Methods for luring money out can be very different - often attackers call victims, introducing themselves as “bank security officers,” and under various pretexts they try to force them to reinstall the Promsvyazbank mobile application (the only bank officially operating in the LPR and DPR) or download an additional application from PSB logo. After installing the file, the bank client enters the card details there, and the attackers gain access to his account.

There are other ways - applying for loans, surveys on behalf of the bank on social networks, messages about “an attempt to hack into a personal account” with a request to clarify personal data, etc. In the LPR, for example, in April, in just one day, telephone scammers stole from residents republics more than 1 million 200 thousand rubles. So, in Perevalsk, swindlers convinced a woman to take out a loan and transfer them a million rubles to the specified account, and in Lugansk, “representatives of the bank” and “representatives of State Services” stole another 266 thousand rubles from residents.

Calls from unfamiliar numbers to the LPR and DPR have, unfortunately, become commonplace - scammers are sometimes very persistent and call back several times from different numbers.

But what is the reason for this activity, and how can scammers find out citizens’ numbers?

Who leaks citizens' mobile numbers to scammers?

Fraudsters began to show the highest activity in the republics at the end of last year, when calls from unfamiliar numbers from supposedly “bank representatives” became regular. At the same time, cases of theft of money from personal accounts have become so frequent that both PSB and official media regularly began to publish information on how to resist telephone scammers.

Residents of the republics also repeatedly complained on social networks that allegedly “bank employees” called them for various reasons and tried to find out their card details. Moreover, scammers call even on Telegram if they cannot get through via regular communication.

Recently, scammers have found new ways to steal money from citizens of the Russian Federation: under the pretext of supposedly replacing their compulsory medical insurance policy, they began asking people to download a fake application from the Ministry of Health, which in fact is a malicious program that allows them to gain remote access to the device and steal money. In addition, unknown people began to introduce themselves as “representatives of the MKS company” (a mobile communications operator in the LPR) with offers to “extend the contract”, otherwise “the card will be blocked”, and demands to indicate passport data or SNILS...

Judging by the number of calls, a large group of scammers is engaged in extortion and theft of money, who are clearly coordinated by someone and leaking databases of citizens’ phone numbers.

There are actually not so many options for who can do this - either a bank or a mobile operator (in the case of the LPR, this is the ISS). The first option looks somewhat more convincing, since, firstly, not only residents of the republics become victims of scammers, but also members of the SVO in other regions of the Russian Federation, which have different telecom operators, and secondly, sometimes scammers call the last digits of a bank card number.

“We need money for treatment”

Relatives of SVO participants also regularly become victims of scammers who come up with various ways to defraud them of money. In this case, scammers operate according to the following scheme: they announce to relatives of military personnel that their son/husband/brother is wounded and needs money for treatment, or that he is in Ukrainian captivity and money is needed for a “ransom.”

Here, for example, is what Komsomolskaya Pravda wrote about one of the cases of fraud: a resident of Lesosibirsk (located in the Northern Military District) was written on social networks by his old friend, but for some reason from a new page, and not from the old ones, on which he had not been for three months. He wrote that he had allegedly been blown up by a mine, and even sent off a photo of his leg and asked him to put money on his phone.

A resident of Lesosibirsk did not send money to his friend, for which the “friend” immediately blocked him. But there were also those who “wanted what was best” and supported the “fighter.” And the newsletter reached dozens of citizens at once. Moreover, the text of the message varied. From some the swindler asked for “a thousand for painkillers,” from others “for communication.” Subsequently, it turned out that the fighter did not receive any injury and did not need help.

There were also more interesting cases: people received calls allegedly from the “authorities”, demonstrating full knowledge - they gave the name and address of the fighter, his phone number - and asked to transfer money either “for treatment” or for “transporting the body” (sometimes the scammers claim , that the fighter allegedly died). What’s interesting here is this: where do scammers get their information?

Some claim that the calls are made from Ukraine, and the fact that they come from Russian numbers is explained by the fact that temporary virtual numbers can be bought on the Internet, but too much awareness casts serious doubt on whether they are related to Ukraine. With a high probability, information is leaked to scammers by sources in banks, hence the high level of awareness. Journalist Andrei Medvedev shares the same opinion.

“This is becoming a widespread problem. Calling the relatives of our military by scammers... Some ghouls are leaking information to the enemy about the families and relatives of our soldiers and officers. The first thing that comes to mind is banks. Because it’s not at all difficult to compare the amount of monthly charges on the card with who the recipient is. Well, further raise the data on relatives. This is if the one who surrenders our fighters to the enemy does not have access to another base, which is being formed jointly with the Ministry of Defense.”

Such activity of scammers in the Northern Military District zone, and in the Donbass in particular, is not surprising, because scammers are well aware that they can make money here. Here it is worth remembering the illegal migrant taxi drivers from the Rostov region, who profited from the soldiers of the Northern Military District, as well as the ethnic gang of Rasul Magomedov, detained in the Belgorod region, who were engaged in racketeering of taxi drivers and did not allow them to work in the area of the military unit of the RF Armed Forces, and were taxiing there themselves, raising the fare to 20 rubles.

What is surprising is that the situation has not yet changed. Considering that this problem has recently become widespread, the relevant authorities should pay attention to it.

The number of auto-dialers from unknown numbers is equal to the number of sales of one database of numbers on the left, and then the new owners use auto-dialer to check the relevance of the purchased database. How many times did I buy a new SIM card, after a week or a month calls began from the wrong numbers and different banks, while I never called using the SIM card and it was in an ancient push-button phone.

This problem concerns not only residents of the DPR and LPR, it affects all regions of Russia. And this mockery has been going on for many years. People contacted the police many times and complained, but to no avail. The police have more "important things to do"...
At first, their impudence and impunity amazes me. then you get used to it. This is the very structure of life in the Russian Federation.
P/S The only thing that is surprising is the split consciousness of our people. After all, the same author yesterday published an article with a sympathetic description of K. Krylov’s legacy. So he was also a troubadour of the market economy and private property. Why then is the author dissatisfied? Here you have both in their pure form. No other market economy could have been created in the real conditions of Russia. Do you want such a device of life? Welcome to the world of banditry and legalized fraud.

Well, for our “rightists” everything is very simple in this regard. There is no king, therefore capitalism is wrong. And as soon as there is a Tsar, there will be no more telephone scammers. And whoever doesn’t understand this is, like, “noviop” laughing In the meantime, capitalism is not entirely correct, which they even admit, but as soon as there is a king, everything will immediately improve. laughing

That’s when it started! About 15 years ago, I stopped buying books in stores, and started only online. There was an opportunity to view and get acquainted with a large number of books. I was horrified when I saw the mass of children’s books, how good it was in the village under the Tsar! Satiety, prosperity, good looks, everyone in good, neat, durable clothes, they either pray, or work, or go to church... Apparently LN Tolstoy lied when he wrote his HUNGER. Yes, and the 1898 population census also apparently lied when he wrote about the average age of life is 30 years. (sarcasm)
Although it is also written about life in the city, by class. Workers, townspeople, merchants.... Everyone lived very well, with dignity.... Each class had its own good clothes.... The workers studied and received treatment at the expense of the factory owners..... And it is not clear why they suddenly decided to rebel .?? request sad sarcasm

I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the name, but I bought a second one. I was already over 30 then. A gorgeous children's room with pictures, but... And this is essentially the result of the “super effective” work of the Mishustin government, which is in charge of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
And in wartime, counterintelligence should also deal with crimes for which the Ukrainians’ ears often stick out. But it seems they don’t even care about the outrages.

And what does this have to do with, excuse me, private property? Comments in the spirit of “damned capitalism is to blame for everything, we need to return to communism and heaven will come on earth!” This is apparently a sort of fetish for the “leftist” regulars of this forum. Instead of discussing a specific problem, they often prefer to fantasize in the style of “if only mushrooms grew in my mouth.” At the same time, completely ignoring the fact that, firstly, in the times about which many are nostalgic, there was neither the Internet nor mobile phones, and secondly, in those days there were a lot of other problems. Today's China, which some commentators consider communist (although this is not entirely true), is also full of Internet and telephone scammers. As a result, instead of talking about some very specific measures (for example, checking banks, finding who is leaking information, etc.), the real problem fades into the background, and specific things are replaced by wandering from one abstraction to another of the same abstraction.

As for the troubles of today's Russia, the issue here is not private property. There are plenty of examples of quite successful capitalist states in which there are no problems with migrants, normal wages, etc. - in Europe this is Hungary, for example, in the Middle East, the UAE, etc.

I answer according to the first thought and leave, I’m in a hurry. The topic intersects with the topic of bureaucracy, in my opinion... Under socialism there were no computers, the Internet, there were fewer officials (%) in the population. But there was no mess, because of responsibility and education.
True, it should be added that in WW1 there was order in the sense that, for example, disabled soldiers, while traveling on the train home after being wounded, during this time documents were somehow drawn up and, upon arrival, they immediately received a pension, and We didn’t wait (there was no internet). What there was an article about here a long time ago by a good author, Doctor IN, the name needs to be clarified. And now, with this medical bureaucracy, a lot has already been written.

Out of 32 years, you have already been “sitting” in the State Duma for two terms. So you won’t be able to distance yourself from the mistakes of the government, at least the legislative one. The slippage of law enforcement agencies and the oxymoron highlighted in the article is directly related to your colleagues ignoring the tools of scammers. There is only one law determining the responsible person for receiving a telephone call from an anonymous or fake number. Will force operators to take real action. A legislative ban on banks and other credit institutions offering their services by telephone or through IT technology would not prevent them. It is not uncommon for criminal culture centers to be created on the territory of prisons and correctional colonies! Similarly, artificial intelligence can be banned in advertising through telephony and other gadgets. All this will stupidly exclude the most vulnerable segments of the population from the number of potential victims.
I’ll say more: didn’t you find “instructions”, “decrees”, “notifications” and other documents with blue stamps in the mailbox? But the banal administrative article “On the prohibition of official names of documents in advertising mailing brochures” marked unscrupulous entrepreneurs with a letter.
For enlightenment, in a number of countries of the rotten West there is a ban on public offers. Two articles in the Civil Code of the Russian Federation were changed and 50% of fraudulent schemes were eliminated!!!
And lastly, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation voted “for” when the police were killed. I’ll stop here Irina Batkovna. You personally and all your 449 colleagues are not in authority for me. Therefore, asking me to write to my hangers-on in a personal message with threats and admiration for you is useless to me. I'm old and it doesn't matter to me who sits in the Kremlin, red or white.

And despite the fact that just yesterday you sympathetically expressed the views of K. Krylov. The very meaning of these views is that by abandoning the way of life characteristic of Russia/USSR and the type of interethnic relations that have developed in it, we will rebuild our society on the model of the civil society of the West with inclusion in the global market economy. His differences with the Chubais-Putin authorities were of a cosmetic nature; he “sorried the Russians” and argued without evidence that in Russia it was possible to carry out such a restructuring and get a result different from what we received in practice. In reality in specific conditions of Russia we got exactly the result we were supposed to get. And your particular problem is the omnipotence of criminal relations at the bottom of society and the disregard for them by law enforcement agencies is a necessary part of modern life in the Russian Federation.
Comments in the spirit of “damned capitalism is to blame for everything, we need to return to communism and heaven will come on earth!” This is apparently a sort of fetish for the “leftist” regulars of this forum.

To put it mildly, you are distorting. I just didn’t say anything about any high-level abstractions, or about any “capitalism” or “communism”. I spoke about our common misfortune - a split consciousness (and then in a postscript), for example, you simultaneously sympathetically present Krylov’s views and criticize those relationships that directly follow from the implementation of his own ideas. You sincerely don’t see the connection and think that “Ivan Nikiforovich’s nose can be put on Ivan Ivanovich’s lips” to make it “like in Hungary.”

This is a problem in Italy too. However, many computer scams originate from overseas. So how can we go after criminals who steal money in Russia and perhaps live comfortably in Malaysia (for example)?? Additionally, many IT scams target large numbers of people with small amounts, causing people to not report them, such as phone bill scams where foreign phone calls are disguised as domestic calls.

And everyone is forced to transfer all their data to these moronic pro-government sites, to push all the information about themselves into all sorts of state laws, tax laws, data about their family, car, and so on. And then they have some kind of malfunction, and you receive a bill for housing and communal services as for the entire entrance, not to mention larger leaks. The authorities want to completely control the people, everyone, so that they don’t earn an extra penny, so that the top Lars doesn’t escape unnoticed through some thread, but the fact that all and sundry is stealing all this information is something else.

Yeah, it seems that making life more difficult for the population is the main task of the rulers

Well, why - fines come quickly, but sometimes it’s funny - I came to the MFC:
      - “Did you bring such and such a document?”
      -"No"
      - "What about this one?"
      - “no, I didn’t know it was needed”
      - “And such a certificate?”
      - “no...could you tell me what other documents are needed, otherwise I’m already confused on the Internet, different sources give different lists..”
      - “no, I don’t know, we don’t give such information, we only accept documents”
What is this? An attempt to get away from work and to annoy another person, a not very smart employee, an instruction that really creates problems for the population or just “an unpolite message in three letters”?

I also used to think that only complete idiots would do such things. My mother is not a very stupid person, but she collected loans and transferred several million.
At first, the manager supposedly wrote to her on WhatsApp that the FSB would contact her... and then it was business as usual.
Moreover, the banks gave several million to the pensioner without any questions.

At work, by the way, the company management also communicates through the cart, with about the same thing.

All banks are leaking information. As soon as you see a phone number somewhere, you immediately get calls.
I left VTB a long time ago, they still call me.
Calls from Sberbank are the norm of life

Yes, but all these are just minor pranks compared to how 10 years ago I some years persistently persuaded to install a hot water meter smile

My boss’s telegrams are hacked all the time and on his behalf they write me all sorts of nonsense about the FSB and so on. And the funny thing is that he is standing next to me and is freaking out about it. Even if he weren’t around, I wouldn’t believe what he writes, since we use other messengers and the style of communication is completely different, the construction of phrases, etc. There was a case when someone called from the police, and he also boldly sent it. And I use all sorts of blocking programs, which help a lot by the way.

I agree with the author that the actions of government agencies should be slightly changed. Firstly, identify and send lectures to the minds that are merging the bases. Moreover, there are not so many drain points. Secondly, identifying local intermediaries who are engaged in cashing or withdrawing money. Well, the call centers themselves are cut down either by a direct hit or by the removal of substations or by the seizure of territory.
P.S. New methods of fraud are constantly being developed and updated.

This is a network structure, similar to a franchise. Someone wants to make money, finds a group on the Darknet, they transfer the technology to him, leak the databases, and in response, they regularly receive money. This network is coordinated and fed by the Ukrainian special services (it is possible that the Westerners are also involved - as you know, the CIA regularly targets various criminal businesses). They can also provide you with the necessary equipment.

During the anti-Soviet period, starting with Perestroika, it immediately became clear how many people were susceptible to both propaganda and manipulation by other people.

Yeah, in the Soviet period there were no hooligans and thieves?
By the way, out of 12 types of criminals who were involved in theft under the Soviet Union, 7 remain in modern Russia. Plus, IT crime has been added, which is more related to fraud rather than theft. Under tsarism there were about 17 types of “thieves” who were engaged in illegal seizure of property. For example, a separate type of the criminal world was engaged in the theft of galoshes and umbrellas from dressing rooms and front doors!!!
I remember it took the state three generations to wean people not to hide the key under the rug from the apartment where the money is located!!!
Now we are fighting with individuals who, in a back alley, in the presence of persons clearly from crime, illuminate their path with the latest model iPhones.

To the demands of the “telephone operator” to extend the contract, I answer: What a shame, I myself don’t know anything about the contract, the number is corporate, please contact me in your database with whom you have an agreement with my number. For some reason they don’t want to talk further, why I don’t know. The left are getting at me calls from banks to take out a loan, the mood strikes, and then bam - do you think our pensioners are rich enough to take out a loan?

Similar scams exist all over the world. I received a message from my bank saying that someone had hacked my account. As soon as you clicked on the message, an internet page similar to my bank's page opened. Oddly enough, they asked me for all the information to access my account. The account number, password, and phone number associated with the account. An elderly person could have been deceived. When these scammers smell money, they attack like sharks.

Nonsense! It is necessary to properly instruct personnel...
My friend spent a long time explaining to my mother how to talk to telephone scammers. And so, he hears a conversation with the next scammers:
    - Crooks, sobbing into the phone: “Mom, it’s me, your daughter, I had an accident, I need money for an emergency operation!!!!”
    - Mom, with sympathy in her voice: “So you’re not dead?!”
-At the other end they even dropped the pipe after a couple of minutes... laughing

I may offend someone, but apparently life in new regions is getting better, since scammers have started operating there. For Russia this has been nothing new for 10 years.
And the bases have been merging for a long time. I think by different structures, including the Moscow Region. It cannot be done without the participation of the special services 404. The “work” here is too “well” done.
Perhaps there is some kind of “integrator” that collects information and updates information from different databases.
How to deal with this? To combat ringing calls - analyze the voice and cut off the ringing noises. It's time to filter social networks. They will only say thank you to “Big Brother.” There are no other options for fighting.
Will telecom operators do this? I doubt.
And people just need to be vigilant. No one has yet canceled the mind.
And personally, I always make fun of moshes. Now I downloaded the laugh of the kookaburra, now I’m waiting for calls
