Israeli press: IDF ends active military operation in Gaza Strip and begins withdrawal of troops
45
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is beginning to withdraw its units from the Gaza Strip as the active phase of the military operation in the Palestinian enclave has come to an end. The Jerusalem Post writes about this.
According to the publication, only the 933rd Nahal Infantry Brigade will remain in the Gaza Strip after the withdrawal of the bulk of Israeli troops. Her responsibilities include protecting the Netzarim corridor, which runs from Gaza's border with Israel to the Mediterranean coast.
Thus, the military operation previously announced by the Israeli government to storm the city of Rafah in the south of the Palestinian enclave will be postponed indefinitely. Probably, the government of Benjamin Netanyahu was influenced by suggestions from the United States. Previously, the US administration threatened “serious consequences” for Israel if it launches an assault on Rafah.
If Israel really abandons the operation in the south of the enclave and withdraws its troops from the Gaza Strip, this will indicate only one thing - the Israeli leadership was forced to meet American demands, because it fears a reduction or cessation of military assistance from the United States and Washington’s refusal to further diplomatic and political support for Tel Aviv in the international arena.
Of course, abandoning the previously declared assault on Rafah will not add to Netanyahu’s political authority, but the elderly prime minister is unlikely to have long-term ambitions anyway.
In turn, the Hamas forces that have retreated to the south of the enclave in this case still have a certain potential for the subsequent restoration of their power and new penetration into the north of the Gaza Strip.
