“The world’s first vehicle in its class”: deliveries of Tiger medium tanks to the Indonesian army began

On February 28, a ceremony to hand over military equipment to the Indonesian Army took place. Among other things, the troops received the first batch of medium tanks Tiger, thereby marking the beginning of the supply of this product for the needs of the aircraft.

Tiger is the world's first modern medium-class tank equipped with the latest technologies

- PT Pindad said in a statement.

The contract for the supply of 18 vehicles was signed back in 2019 and since then the deadline for its implementation has been constantly postponed.

The creation of a new tank was initiated by the country's military department and became one of the priority programs of the local defense industry, based on solutions proposed by the Turkish military-industrial complex.

Developed as a result of cooperation between the two countries, the Tiger (locally called Harimau, “Tiger”) weighs 30 tons. The MTO is located in the rear of the tank. It is equipped with a two-man C3150 turret, which is armed with a 105 mm cannon, complemented by a universal 7,62 mm machine gun, capable of firing at air targets thanks to its high vertical guidance angle (+42 degrees).

The ballistic protection of the tank corresponds to level 5 according to the STANAG 4569 standard (withstands a 30-mm armor-piercing projectile from a distance of 500 m and fragments from a 155-mm OFS when it explodes at a distance of 10 m). The tank's anti-mine capabilities allow it to withstand the explosion of 10 kg of explosives under the track.

As for me, it would be better if they took the T-64 and modified it, both cheaper and more efficiently.
these types of light tanks weighing an MBT with armor about an infantry fighting vehicle and a 105mm cannon with a price tag higher than that of the T-90 IMHO, they either take it out of stupidity or because of kickbacks

T-64 is only available, but they themselves don’t have enough, they are looking for someone to give them something. There may still be some in storage in the Russian Federation, but there is no foolishness in giving them away or even selling them to anyone, it’s a no brainer that they will soon end up in storage.

Yes, even the T-55 with the new fire control system and emergency protection system was better and much cheaper than these tanks.

Indonesia is a huge country, 5000 km along and 2500 across. Large and small islands, lagoons and corals, rocks and volcanoes, tropics, monsoons! Complete variety, but where to use this "Tiger"? Without a clear possibility of landing from watercraft.
Only close to the capital. Squeeze political competitors.
It’s not for nothing that the Turks help with ordinary court games. Thirty tanks are enough to even overthrow the parliament or abdicate the president.

Asi dobrý názor.Lepší by pro ně byly zespoda opancéřované vrtulníky,s raketami, kulomety
a případně s laserovými děly - malými.A možná by to vyšlo levněji.Zásah by mohly provádět i na malých ostrovech,což u nich asi je aktuální.

Probably a good opinion. It would be better if they had helicopters with missiles, machine guns and possibly lasers
guns - small. And maybe it would be cheaper. They could also carry out interventions on small islands, which is probably relevant for them.

Helicopters with missiles and machine guns on UDC-helicopter carriers of the Mistral type are generally an incomparable theme for the island, but they are too expensive for Indonesia.
However, Indonesia is actively trying to acquire modern anti-ship missiles, which, surrounded by two oceans, is much more reasonable than obscure tanks.

Isn’t it a little heavy, 30 tons, but the climate there is damp, the soil is full of water, in the rainy season it’s terrible on the asphalt in cities, but outside the city it’s a mess. They would like amphibians and not medium tanks

It's true. But something else alerted me: “The tank’s anti-mine capabilities allow it to withstand the explosion of 10 kg of explosives under the caterpillar.”
Is it really true? Damn, unbelievable.
Our TM-62M tears any tracks (7,5 kg of TNT).

So what's so special about this tank? Like a tank, it’s nothing, but for reconnaissance it’s massive. If only to support infantry, but for these purposes any equipment is suitable, even an old T34 type tank. An infantry fighting vehicle, in principle, can do the same thing as this sub-tank, we can’t do that)

The early T-34s were scolded for the fact that the commander worked part-time as a gunner, but apparently the Indonesians did not read that scolding, and they knocked together a 2-seater turret. By the way, there is no commander's cupola either.lol The machine gun is separate from the cannon, and only 7,62. But it’s probably good enough to give the Papuans a nightmare in the jungle, although in the same Northern Military District it would hardly have lived on the LBS much longer than the French wheeled “tanks”, and would not have brought much more benefit.

They probably don't need any more. This is how medium tanks have evolved almost everywhere in MBT. It’s the Indonesian STs that have become the coolest, because there are no competitors. Although the Americans are no less successful with their “light tank”.

As far as I understand, this Turkish-Indonesian "Tiger" has an automatic loader, so there is a commander + gunner in the turret.

Does such a class of tanks even exist, what would be the “best” in it? And who needs a tank with only 30 armor protection?

It is assumed that the battles will not be with the aggressor (normal MBTs), but with jihad mobiles (heavy machine gun) and partisan infantry. Well, suppress civil unrest.

Why not? Anti-tank weapons will still burn more protected tanks, but it will hold everything that is not anti-tank.

There is nothing new here. The world has already seen all this almost verbatim in the form of Leopard-1, AMX-30 and TAM. In a reinforced version in the form of T-54/55 and T-62. But yes, the world has stopped producing medium tanks in recent decades, so apparently it really is the first medium tank of the 21st century, the Americans with their medium tank are clearly lagging behind.

Maybe the idea is not bad for their theater of operations, but the execution... negative The tank fired and fired and... did not hit the target! request At the fourth minute, when the tank was moving, the vibration of the barrel was generally not normal! belay Is it not possible to shoot straight away? sad The only positive point that I noticed is the presence of an automatic loader (at 1.05-1.20 minutes - this is visible).
The combat effectiveness of this unit is highly questionable, however. what

I agree the shooting results are not impressive, although the target is smaller in size than the standard one we have, but the commercial does not show the target being hit... this is a so-so result.
The vibrations of the barrel, well, the stabilizer and control system do not turn on during the march, a hard stop is installed, so this is no reason to doubt that it is not possible to fire on the move.

In my opinion, a light tank is a good idea. However, it would have to be designed from scratch as a light tank. Converting a military vehicle into a tank is the simplest solution, but it does come with some challenges, including the inevitable height of the vehicle.

Only this is not a light tank. Modern Medium Weight Tank (MMWT) - medium tank. LT is a vehicle weighing about 20 tons (K21, BMP-3, Sprut), ST - 30 tons and MBT weighing 40+ tons.

LT is a machine weighing about 20 tons

The Americans have been giving birth to the light tank Griffon-2 for a long time; its performance characteristics are similar to this Tiger and its weight is 32 tons. They did it, immediately rethought it and renamed it the Booker Infantry Support Fighting Vehicle, added some more and got a weight of 38 tons. The barn is still the same.

the first medium tank of the 21st century,

Well, what kind of a medium tank is it, I beg your pardon? By its very nature, a medium tank must withstand being hit by its own projectile, even at long distances.
