The guns on the railway transporter. French 155 mm 1877 M

2
The command of the French army quickly realized the full depth of the mistake made on the eve of the First World War, which was that the main emphasis was placed on light field implements. Schneider already in August 1914 was given the task to work out the options for installing large-caliber sea guns on railway transporters. The main goal of these works was to create a sufficiently mobile heavy field artillery. The 155 mm M gun 1877 was one of the first guns that Schneider installed on the railway conveyor. The 1877 M gun was developed at the beginning of the 1870-ies for use in the coastal defense system. The length of this tool was 27 calibers. The firing range when using armor-piercing and high-explosive fragmentation projectiles (mass 40,3 — 43,0 kg) was approximately 9,8 km.

The gun on the railway conveyor was installed on its staff carriage, which included the upper and lower machines and wheel chocks, made in the form of a pair of hydraulic cylinders. To ensure circular fire, the carriage was mounted on a turntable mounted on a central pin on a railway conveyor. Drives of mechanisms of vertical and horizontal aiming - manual. The smallest declination angle of the implement was 3 °, the largest elevation angle was 40 °. When creating this railway installation, in addition to the gun carriage at the coastal cannon, they also borrowed a massive shield ceiling, which protected the mechanisms of the gun and the calculation from shell fragments flying from both sides, top and front.

The construction of the railway transporter was a complete improvisation: the usual railway platform with two two-axle bogies was taken as the basis. Her frame was strengthened with steel plates. For the perception of forces acting in the longitudinal direction, as well as vertical forces, a special frame was lowered onto the rails with the help of six screw jacks. Efforts arising in the direction across the axis of the rails when firing were perceived as outriggers, which were also supplied with screw jacks with base plates.

Despite the rather primitive design, this conveyor turned out to be quite successful and was subsequently (with minor changes) used during the construction of other railway installations. Also an important advantage of the conveyor was the relatively short time needed to bring to the combat position: the calculation of 22 people performed these works for 10 minutes. As for the described railway installation, only one was made. In fact, this installation was an experimental model, which confirmed the possibility of using heavy naval and coastal artillery in the interests of the ground forces.

Performance characteristics:
Caliber - 155 mm;
Barrel length - 27 calibers;
Maximum elevation angle - + 40 degrees;
Declination angle - -3 degrees;
Angle of horizontal fire - 360 degrees;
The mass of the high-explosive projectile - 40,3 kg;
The longest firing range - 9800 m.

    Interesting design, tactical weapon of its time

    I understand that the further development of the 155-mm M 1877 became much more powerful 340 mm guns - M 1881 / 1884 / 1893. But these babies are much more serious in all respects. So, the firing range M 1881 (1884) / 1893 reached 20 / 27 kilometers, respectively - where is the 155 graph paper with its modest 10 km. laughing Is there any information about the combat use by the French of the M 1877 during the Franco-Prussian war? The Kaiser troops successfully used similar weapons to bombard Paris.
