Pistol Glock 17 (Austria)
On the pistols of the Austrian company Glock today said almost everything. Anyone who is more or less interested in firearms weapons in general, and personal short arms, in particular, knows that the Glock is perhaps the most popular and recognizable pistol, one of the most reliable, enjoying consistently high demand from law enforcement agencies and military forces around the world, and from ordinary citizens buying their weapons for sport shooting and self defense. Many experts in the field of personal weapons and their combat use consider Glock pistols to be the best in the world due to the excellent combination of such qualities as reliability in harsh operating conditions, more than sufficient accuracy for both firing and self-defense, both aim and speed “instinctive” shooting offhand, high safety, convenience, comfort with constant hidden or open wearing, maximum ease of handling, ease of maintenance, huge operational life, interchangeable awn parts, very high strength and resistance to coating steel parts to corrosion and wear, and finally, the relatively high cost.
This is really an excellent weapon, which is preferred by professionals involved in real combat operations and special operations, fighters of the best special forces of the world. Glock is also very fond of those who just like guns and shooting, and in particular, who prefer weapons with no problems. People living in countries where personal short-barreled weapons are allowed to be sold to civilians, choosing Glock for shooting or for wearing in self-defense, are guided by the same principles as the military and the police. It is always better to own a gun that will not let you down either at the shooting range or on the street. It is better to have a weapon that is convenient and easy to use than difficult to handle, which is especially important for people who do not have the opportunity to regularly train with their gun on the use of weapons in extreme situations. It is no secret that owners in such conditions, where there is simply no time for reflection, and all actions are performed automatically, they simply forget about whether the fuse on their gun is turned on or not, and often about its location. Of course, this is not a problem for a trained professional, but for an ordinary person who is not used to being confronted with extreme situations often, the simplicity of his gun is vital.
Today, there are a lot of easy-to-use models of large and well-known, reputed manufacturers in the arms market all over the world. Compliance with this requirement is achieved primarily by the presence of only a self-articulated firing mechanism and the absence of a manually operated safety lever, or the pistol is supplied with double-action trigger with a safety lever for trigger release and, again, without a safety lever. Of course there are a lot of options. But the choice of police, military and civilian is dictated not only by ease of handling, but also by the presence of other advantages outlined above for Glock pistols, which make this weapon practical and suitable for any tasks. Shooters participating in IPSC practice shooting in a class of mass-produced weapons also often prefer simple, accurate, reliable, and convenient Glock to more expensive pistols. Of course, the design features of its trigger and the need to ensure safety in circulation imply a rather large force and length of the trigger stroke, which are generally quite acceptable, but nevertheless have a negative impact on the accuracy of aimed shooting, say at a distance of 14 meters, in comparison with pistols , equipped with double trigger or single action. However, not to mention the advantages in a combat situation over such classical constructions, it should be noted that Glock pistols consistently demonstrate quite good accuracy for a combat pistol with the most varied shooters and weapon retention methods. In addition, its accuracy is enough even for fans of precisely aimed shooting from mass-produced pistols and achieving maximum results. With a new, just purchased Glock pistol, you can immediately go to the shooting range and it will shoot for sure.
However, the controversy regarding the design of these popular Austrian pistols does not subside. Let's say that most of the weapons of self-loading pistols on the market today are more visually pleasing than the repetitive Glock models with a strictly functional and, if you can put it that way, austere design. Although many strict forms like more than elegant models. But this is a matter of taste. However, this controversy does not subside in the arms press, rifle clubs and forums on the Internet. Moreover, the arrows and weapon lovers are mostly divided into those for whom the Glock is the best gun in the world, and those who hold the opposite opinion, or argues in favor of other manufacturers and their models that surpass Glock in one way or another. It also happens that those who prefer the Glock choose another weapon as the main pistol, and the opponents of these Austrian pistols become their ardent supporters. At the very beginning of their entry into the market, there were many legends about the pistols of this company that detectors at airports could not recognize these weapons. Of course, it was pure fiction, inflated by incompetent journalists. The gun has more than enough metal parts to detect it. However, Gaston Glock had to personally demonstrate publicly the "visibility" by the detectors of his company's pistols, as a result of which the myth was dispelled. In any case, Glock has achieved tremendous success by supplying its products to the arms markets of various countries around the world. And those who tried these guns in the shooting, even in the case of not very positive attitude to their design, choose a Glock for use as a primary, one of the main or a spare weapon.
Glock was created in 1980 by a group of designers with the participation of Friedrich Dehanta under the direction of Gaston Glock in an Austrian company founded in 1963, which had never before been involved in the design and manufacture of weapons. At first, the company specialized in the manufacture of tools, then began the production of military goods - machine-gun belts, grenades and knives. By the way, the company still produces high-quality knives. And Gaston Glock's pistol production was pushed by the search for the Austrian army's new personal weapons in 1980. The designers managed to implement the revolutionary at that time decisions, which, as experience has shown, work perfectly in combat pistols. The result was one of the leading positions of the company in the global arms market and the widest popularity of its products. The Glock 17 is the first plastic-framed gun that has earned great success in the global arms market. The frame, trigger and magazine are made of high-strength polymer.
The gun for the first time combined in itself a small weight, a large magazine capacity, compactness and safety in use, when worn with a cartridge in the chamber. Austrians borrowed barrel locking from a Sig Sauer P220 pistol. The designers abandoned the manually operated fuse in favor of the automatic ones. The trigger mechanism was the simplest, based on the same Austrian pistol Roth-Steyr M1907. It should be clarified that the 17 index does not mean the number of cartridges in the store. This is the copyright number of Gaston Glock. In 1982, under the designation P-90, the gun was adopted by the Austrian army and police. Glock 17 was equipped with the EKO Cobra (Einsatzkommando Cobra) antiterrorism unit of the Austrian Federal Police. A little later, this gun was used by the armed forces, law enforcement agencies and special forces of Sweden and Finland, and since 1986, it has been adopted by the Norwegian Army. Since the beginning of the production of the first model Glock, three generations of these pistols have changed, and now the fourth generation, Gen 4, is in production. The first generation did not have a notch on the front and rear surfaces of the handle, which appeared in the second, which began to be produced in 1990 year. The third generation, in addition to notching and chaotic ribbing on the sides of the handle, received the same grooves for the fingers on the front surface of the handle and the notches with the lower projection under the thumb, both in the left and in the right surface of the handle, as well as mounting accessories.
At the end of 1990, Glock 17 replaced Jericho 941 in YAMAM, a special unit of the Israeli police. After that, some special units of the Israel Defense Forces adopted it in exchange for Sig Sauer P226 and Sig Sauer P228. Currently, Glock pistols are used in armies and various power structures around 60 countries of the world. In 1986, Austrian pistols began to be imported into the United States. The first law enforcement agency that adopted the Glock pistols was the Colby Police Department in Kansas, and the first large consignment was placed in the Department of the City of St. Paul, Minnesota. Notable tests of Austrian pistols, conducted by 25 police officers from Miami. The weapon was tested for safety when it was dropped on steel and concrete from 18 meters from a height with a cartridge in the chamber. The shot did not occur. The weapon was kept in salt water and the fully equipped magazine was shot at a high pace. There was no delay. During 45 minutes, 1000 cartridges with expansive bullets were continuously shot out of it without any problems. After these tests, the Miami Police Department accepted the Glock pistols. Currently, various versions of Glock's personal short-barreled weapons are in service with the US FBI (22, 23 and 27 models), the New York Police (with the “New-York Trigger” USM, which has a greater descent force), Boston, Kansas and South Carolina State Police (South Carolina police first adopted the Glock 22 pistol) and Mississippi, the Customs Department and the Anti-Drug Administration, as well as various special forces, such as US Navy Seals and Delta. Around 5000, the US federal and local police departments have adopted it.
Glock pistols make up a little more than half of all short-barreled weapons purchased by US law enforcement agencies. They are used by police around the world, for example, Glock is in service in Canada, Holland, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, India and the Philippines. Glock 17 is used by the Hong Kong police. Iraqi police also use Glock pistols along with other short-barreled weapons, for example, manufacturers such as Beretta and Sig Sauer. In Germany, the Glock 17 is in service with the famous Special Forces Division of the German Federal Police GSG9 (Grenzschutzgruppe 9 - 9 Border Protection Group) and SEK - German Police Special Forces (Saxony-Anhalt Spezialeinsatzkommando). In France, Glock 17, along with the 19 and 26 models, are in service with the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group GIGN (Grouped'InterventiondelaGendarmerieNationale), the Search, Assistance, Intervention, Disconnection RAID anti-terrorism unit of the French National Police GIPNN (API). de la Police Nationale).
In Belgium, Glock is used by the National Gendarmerie Assault Division - ESI (Esquadrond'InterventionSpecial) and the BBT special unit of the Antwerp Police Department. Glock pistols are used by the Polish Mobile Emergency Response Team GROM (Grupa Reagowania Operacyjno-Manewrowego). Glock 17 is used in law enforcement structures and departments of the Russian Federation, along with other Western models, such as CZ 75 B, and Russian - SPS, PYa, GSH-18, shooting 9 × 19 cartridges. For example, these pistols were put into service in the FSB, the GRU, the FSO, the UFSIN of the Russian Federation and the special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The success of the gun is not to a small extent also promoted by the manufacturer’s extensive advertising campaign. But not only. In comparative tests, Glock has always withstood tests for reliability, convenience and safety in handling, and accuracy of shooting. The company Glock is famous for good service. All defective parts are replaced without problems with new ones, and instead of the old coating with a worn outer black layer, a new one is applied for a nominal fee. At the moment, the manufacturer has implemented more than 2000000 pistols of various modifications.
Automation works according to the use of recoil in the short course of the trunk. Locking is carried out with the help of a declining breech, which enters with its rectangular projection located above the chamber, into the window for ejection of the shot case-shell sleeves. The reduction occurs when the bevel of the lower tide of the breech breech interacts with the protrusion of the frame. The impactor firing mechanism of the hammer type, with a preliminary, partial cocking of the firing pin when the casing bolt retracts and is inserted before the trigger is pressed. The company Glock calls the USM of this design only self-cocked (DAO). However, this system is in fact a classic single-action USM with an additional dovzvodom drummer. In Glock pistols, the firing pin is cocked by moving the casing shutter back, and the relatively long trigger stroke and a slightly larger force than the ordinary single-action trigger required for the firing pin retraction replace the manually-operated fuse. The length and stroke force in this case prevent a random shot in the absence of a safety lever.
In addition to this, Glock trigger gun does not allow the shooter to re-squeeze the trigger after the misfire, trying to initiate the primer again. It is necessary to extract the defective cartridge, thereby placing the drummer in the preliminary platoon, and to send a new cartridge from the magazine to the chamber for firing. This is also a sign of the classic single-action USM, just in this case the course and effort of descent is greater. The gun is equipped with three independently operating automatic fuses. The company Glock called this system Safe Action. The safety lever, which is provided with a trigger, blocks its movement back and releases it only when the arrow is pressed consciously. The automatic safety of the firing pin makes it impossible to strike the striker against the cartridge case in the event of an accidental breakdown from the sear of a platoon. The trigger pull with its special protrusion raises the fuse, which is a cylinder with a groove, and opens the way forward for the drummer. Shockproof fuse is a protrusion trigger thrust, having a cruciform shape, which is included in the groove of the shutter casing. He is an obstacle to disrupting the battle platoon during an external strike.
In practice, this design was very simple and effective. It provides a shot in the shortest time and safety in circulation. Pistols of the latest issues are supplied with an ejector, which also serves as a pointer to the presence of a cartridge in the chamber. The trigger force is 2,5 kg and can be adjusted from 2 to 4 kg. Polymer frame is equipped with four steel rails, which moves the shutter-casing. The ergonomically shaped handle has a slope of 112 degrees. On the left side of the frame is a small slide gate lever. The small area of its surface is often a reason for criticism, but the original lever is easily replaced with a larger one if necessary. The trunk latch is double-sided, located above the trigger guard. Store latch located at the base of the trigger guard.
Right-hand rifling has a hexagonal profile with rounded side edges, which reduces friction and distributes the load on the barrel more evenly when a bullet passes through it. A barrel with such a profile lasts longer, and the barrel bore is less covered with a layer of brass or copper from the shells of the bullets and less deforms the shells themselves. That is, such a barrel is easier and faster to clean, and the integrity of the bullet shell increases accuracy. The shell of the bullet adheres more tightly to the edges of the bore, creating a better obturation of the powder gases, due to which they give it a slightly higher energy and initial velocity, but in general, this is not noticeable. Sights, made of plastic, consist of a rear sight with the possibility of adjusting horizontally by shifting it, and a front sight, which can be replaced with another one with a different height for vertical correction. The double-row magazine holds 17 rounds, but larger ones can be used. The gun consists of only 34 parts and can be completely disassembled with a pin or nail in one minute. Glock pistols are currently chambered for .380 ACP, 9mm Parabellum, .357 SIG, .40 S&W, 10mm Auto and .45 ACP.
Today, the weapons market has a huge amount of parts for “customization”, various additional devices and accessories, from increased levers of the fuse or slide stop to adjustable sights and even steel frames produced by both large and well-known and small private companies. The most popular parts for Glock pistols are enlarged magazine latches, recoil springs of varying elasticity, steel flies and adjustable pillars with tritium inserts. Practice has shown that replacing a standard magazine latch with an enlarged one for faster replacement can lead to its spontaneous loss in a holster and when removing a weapon. It is advisable to replace the recoil spring only if the shooting is carried out with the same, usually reinforced, cartridges, since using less powerful ammunition there will be delays in shooting due to insufficient opening of the bolt-casing.
The best solution for improving and increasing the effectiveness of the pistol will be the replacement of standard front and rear sights with sights such as Truglo's TFO (Tritium Fiber Optic) equipped with green light-emitting fiber optic inserts containing tritium. Green color is better than red and white, with good lighting. Plastic with optical fiber properties directs most of the light flux along the axis of the cylinder inserts, with the result that the arrow instantly concentrates on them and aiming much faster. At the same time, in the twilight or in a dark room, aiming is carried out with the help of brightly glowing tritium. These sights for obvious reasons, of course, are more expensive than usual, but work fine day and night, significantly increasing the speed of aiming.
In the model range Glock has a series of guns with integrated compensators. These pistols are designated with the letter C (Compensated) in addition to the index of the original sample - Glock 17C. Such models are intended mainly for practical shooting competitions, as well as for beginner shooters. The main function of the compensator is to reduce weapon flipping when fired. The jet of powder gases, directed upwards, counteracts the toss of the pistol. As a result, increases the rate of fire and accuracy of high-speed shooting. The disadvantage is a strong flash. In low light, the image of this flash is stored for a short time in memory, which makes it difficult to quickly produce the next shot precisely. Such a gun quickly becomes polluted, and when shooting from the hip, the flow of powder gases unpleasantly hits the arrow in the face. There are also delays if weak cartridges are used.
The frame, made of polymer, makes weapons easy and at the same time has high strength. Early-release pistols had handles with flat side and grooved front and rear surfaces. The handle with a large angle of inclination is very comfortable to hold and has protrusions for the fingers on the front surface, stops for the thumb on both sides, and also has front and rear notches. This handle makes the weapon well-controlled and provides accuracy, both with careful aiming, and with high-speed shooting. When shooting doublets for all full-size and compact models, the characteristic feature is high accuracy and a strictly vertical position of hits. Glock pistol grips do not “cool” the hand at low temperatures. On the front of the frame there are grooves for mounting tactical lights and laser designators. Shutter-casing is produced by high-precision casting. The special treatment of steel parts called Tenifer, which is carbonitriding, increases the strength of their surface to 64 Rockwell units, and also greatly increases corrosion resistance.
Udarnikovy USM was chosen by designers not only because of the simplicity in production. It allows you to minimize the distance from the back of the frame to the axis of the barrel. In turn, the shoulder of recoil decreases and, accordingly, the tossing of the weapon during firing. This design does not require the hardening of the frame with steel inserts that increase the weight. In Glock 17 for the first time in the pistols was used a helical return spring with turns of rectangular section. In modern models, this spring is fixed on its own guide, which simplifies and facilitates disassembly and assembly of weapons. The shop has a plastic case - the result of the lack of production equipment for the manufacture of shops from sheet steel in the period when the gun began to be produced. To release the steel shop in the future did not become due to deunification.
Like any weapon, Glock pistols have their drawbacks. Often the cause of misfires is contamination of the canal of the striker, usually due to sand that has got there. With a weak grip sometimes there are cases of underbinding of the cartridge. Plastic flies were not strong and get off the shutter-casing when struck from behind, but this disadvantage is easily eliminated by replacing the sights with steel. Another disadvantage is the small dimensions of the slide delay and the magazine latch, but this is again eliminated by replacing them with larger ones. 17C pistols and other versions with integrated compensators when using insufficiently powerful cartridges or loaded with light bullets often do not extract spent cartridges and do not deliver cartridges due to the fact that some of the energy required for the stable operation of automation is consumed by the compensator. There were problems with guides that broke from side impacts due to an error in production, but rather quickly resolved. Glock pistols are easy to shoot, but in order to shoot very accurately, you need quite a long workout. The cause of breakage of parts and the destruction of the frames are too powerful, usually manually filled cartridges, but this is no longer a direct disadvantage of the design itself. The disadvantages can also be indirectly attributed bumping parts relative to each other, for example, the bolt on the frame and the store in the neck of the handle.
An interesting feature of Glock pistols is the ability to fire under water. In this case, not only the rupture does not occur, but the trunk is blown up. However, for stable operation of the capsule requires a special drummer with transverse grooves or a set of Spring cups amfibia - a hammer spring with a plastic tray with holes. Available only for pistols chambered for 9mm Parabellum. But for firing under water without the risk of blow-up of the barrel, the use of FMJ round bullets is recommended. Pistols Glock allow shooting under water at a depth of three meters. The bullet saves a lot of energy at a distance of up to two meters when shooting at a depth of one meter. Shooting at close range from under water is also effective, and there is no sound of a shot. This method of shooting is taught in many special units.
It is necessary to mention the series of tests that the Glock 17 serial has successfully passed. Ice - a pistol with a loaded magazine was frozen in an ice cube on 60 days. After that, it was removed from the ice and 100 shots were fired at 10 cartridges. Dirt - the gun was greased, closed and immersed in mud of various consistency: dry sand, clay, wet river sand. After each such procedure, repeated 5 times, 100 shots were fired. In the mud - the gun was completely wetted with water and immersed in river silt. After a single shaking of the pistol with the sludge residue, the 10 series of 10 shots was fired. Water - a fully equipped pistol was immersed in the 1 hour in the water to a depth of 1 meter, then the pistol was taken out of the water and immediately 10 series of 10 shots were fired. Durability: a loaded pistol was laid on coarse gravel, after which a heavy truck drove through it. Then the truck was parked for an hour with a parked wheel on a pistol. After that 100 shots were fired. All tests were conducted in the specified sequence with the same gun and one magazine. None of them had any delays.
Each Glock pistol is tested by firing high-power test cartridges that create a lot of pressure in the barrel. Practice has confirmed that Glock can withstand almost twice the excess pressure. The weapon has a great durability. Some pistols kept working after hundreds of thousands of shots. The practice of regular shooting by the owners of these pistols for a long time, as well as with shooting under water and long shooting without cleaning and lubricating the weapon, confirms the highest corrosion resistance of all parts - Glock does not rust. As for survivability and resource, here the products of the Austrian company are simply amazing records. The gun's life on the warranty is 40000 shots, but factory tests have shown that the Glock 17 can withstand more than 360000 shots without mechanical damage to the main parts of the weapon. Chuck Taylor - weapons specialist and famous journalist shot more than one million rounds from his Glock! In general, Glock pistols are very practical, excellent in all respects weapons, and are the best choice for police, military and special forces soldiers, as well as for ordinary citizens who use a pistol for self-defense or who are fond of sport shooting. At the end of 2009, the company launched the fourth generation Glock pistols, designated Gen 4, which were presented at the SHOT Show 2010 in Las Vegas. The first Gen 4 models were the fourth generation Glock 22 and Glock 17 pistols, which received the designation Glock 22 Gen 4 and 17 Gen 4, respectively. The main innovations of Gen 4 steel: interchangeable panels of the back of the handle; new texture surfaces of the handle; two return springs; narrower handle; increased magazine latch with a larger contact area, which can be rearranged on the right side of the gun frame; On the left side of the shutter-casing, behind the stylized emblem of the company and the model number is the designation Gen 4.
