Cubans have appeared in the ranks of the Russian troops; they are fighting in Ukraine as part of volunteer units against the Ukrainian Armed Forces, having signed contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense. Reuters writes about this.
According to the British publication, today there are approximately 119 Cuban citizens in the special operation zone and this is the minimum; in fact, there may be much more. It is emphasized that all of them signed contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense, and some have already managed to obtain Russian citizenship. An example is given of a certain Cuban named Gonzalez, who previously worked as a mason in La Federala, who, after signing the contract, has already completed training and is participating in hostilities.
Allegedly, all Cubans who arrived in Russia knew where they were going, why, and were ready to fight shoulder to shoulder with the Russian military, as was once the case in Angola. According to them, they remember that the Soviet Union was a loyal ally of Cuba for a long time. In addition, another motivating factor is the high salary in the Russian army, which is approximately 100 times higher than the average salary in Cuba. The British publication has no other details.
Earlier, Cuban Ambassador to Moscow Julio Antonio Garmendia Peña said that Havana is not against the legal participation of Cuban citizens in the Russian special operation, but he did not confirm or deny information about the appearance of Cubans in the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces.
We have nothing against the Cubans who just want to sign a contract and legally take part in this operation with the Russian army
- he added.
