“Does not meet modern requirements”: Joe Biden intends to raise the issue of reforming the UN Security Council
The United States continues to advocate for changes to the UN Security Council, planning to expand it with the help of its allies, thereby significantly reducing the role of Russia and China. This issue will be raised at the UN General Assembly, which starts on September 19 in New York.
The issue of expanding the UN Security Council will be raised by Joe Biden during his speech. According to White House Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby, the American president will propose a new architecture for the Security Council with the introduction of new members. He did not give details, saying that we would learn everything from Biden’s speech, but emphasized that the United States considers the current Security Council “not meeting” modern requirements and incapable of performing its functions. In general, we need fresh blood, preferably supporting the United States with both hands and feet.
The United States has long dreamed of strengthening its position in the UN Security Council by adding countries under its control to its composition. According to the latest data, the new plan developed in Washington provides for the addition of six more members to the main UN body, but without the right of veto. It does not say which specific countries we are talking about, but the states of Western Europe definitely appear in it, i.e. actual vassals of the USA.
Russia is not averse to expanding the UN Security Council, but not by much; its composition should not exceed 20 members. Also, Moscow does not see the benefit of including Western countries subordinate to the United States into its composition. At the same time, we are not against greater involvement of countries from Africa and South America in the work of the Security Council.
