The American press presented its own version of the alleged removal of the Chinese Defense Minister from office
Chinese Defense Minister Colonel General Li Shangfu could be removed from his post in connection with an investigation into corruption. This is reported by the American press, in particular by The Washington Post (WP).
According to the publication, Li Shangfu could have been involved in corruption even at the time when he headed the military procurement department of the Ministry of Defense of the People's Republic of China. The publication's sources inform that the investigation is being carried out specifically on the facts of corruption during this period.
Earlier, The Financial Times reported that American intelligence has information about the removal of General Li Shangfu from his post and the beginning of an investigation against him.
Let us recall that 65-year-old Colonel General Li Shanfu headed the Ministry of Defense of the People's Republic of China only in March 2023, replacing Colonel General Wei Fenghe, who headed the military department in 2018-2023. Before his appointment as Minister of Defense, Li Shangfu headed the equipment development department of the Central Military Commission, was deputy commander of the Strategic Support Forces of the People's Liberation Army of China and chief of the General Staff of the PLA Armaments.
There is currently no official information that General Li Shangfu has been removed from his duties as head of the military department or sent into retirement. The Chinese authorities are not known for their efficiency and frankness in covering such events, and if an investigation is indeed underway against Li Shangfu, but it does not prove anything, then story accusing the minister of corruption will remain only the version of the American media, and nothing more.
