A company has been selected in the USA to create a new type of drone, LongShot.

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), responsible for developing new technologies for use by the armed forces, selected the company to create the LongShot unmanned system. This is about drone, which will be transported by manned combat aircraft.

According to some experts, the LongShot program is one of a series of attempts to maintain the superiority of the American military aviation over potential adversaries - China and Russia. LongShot drones will allow you to quickly develop air superiority over a selected area, the developers believe. These drones will be carried by fighter aircraft on an external hardpoint or in the bays of bombers. Once launched, such a lightweight and hard-to-reach aircraft will move towards the enemy and attack them with air-to-air missiles such as the AIM-120 and the like.

This is another idea to hit an enemy without endangering the manned aircraft or revealing its position during the attack, experts say. However, if the carrier aircraft is hit before releasing the drone, two assets will be lost at once.

The advantage of the LongShot program is that it does not require the creation of long-range UAVs launched by ground or surface means.

After much hesitation, DARPA chose General Atomics to implement the LongShot program. The company is expected to begin flight tests of the drone as early as December this year. So far, the specific characteristics of the new UAV have not been disclosed.

They chose it, they didn’t choose it, but this is still a multi-year drain on the budget. It’s like with hypersound - money flows, but there is no result. They have a variant like the ancient Trident 2, which itself is “hypersonic”, only it does not fit under the belly of the aircraft and cannot maneuver in any way. And I drank again anyway.

They drank the budget - this is when they received the money, reported, and at the exit - only cartoons and advertising booklets.

She hasn't gone anywhere. Flies, improves.

An F-15E Strike Eagle from the 40th Flight Test Squadron, 96th Test Wing at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, is flying alongside the XQ-58A Valkyrie. August 2023.
Only Valkyrie is a completely different program and a completely different concept that DARPA has nothing to do with.

After starting it is so light and inaccessible the aircraft will move towards the enemy and attack them with air-to-air missiles such as the AIM-120 and the like.

Hard to reach for which? For the pilot in the compartment? winked
There is no return option, i.e. He didn’t find a target for himself, so he’s neutralized on the ground along with the missiles?

In essence, the idea of an “airplane” is being revived—a formerly heavy bomber carrying light fighters.

Technology has come a long way. The pilot was removed from the cockpit, replaced by AI or control from the carrier with the indispensable participation of the AWACS aircraft, so as not to expose the carrier of these aircraft.
    So much for "Long Shot".

      Absolutely spot on.
And if you dig deeper, this is Tsiolkovsky’s idea - a multi-stage rocket applied to aviation.
